Does anyone have advice with diner dining at 'Ohana with children to keep the price down? Since it's all-you-care-to-enjoy family style, I was thinking of telling the server that my kids (6 and 3 years old) will just eat off my plate and my wife's plate. Is this frowned upon/ allowed or should I just pay for them and hope they eat more than just bread! Has anyone had success with children eating "off their plates" at all-you-care-to-eat restaurants?

I do not have a dining plan and will be paying out of pocket.

Not being rude but there are reasons why there are children prices. They will tell you no you cannot do that.

It is an 'all you can eat' restaurant with dishes served family style and to each person. Each person in your party will be charged regardless of age or how little/much they eat.

No sharing allowed. Everyone at the table will be charged the price for their age.

Maybe have dinner at Kona cafe instead so you can share meals?

You can't do this. Whether they eat off or your plate or theirs, they are still eating and will be charged. If you don't think they will eat what is offered family-style, they also offer more traditional children's fare, like chicken tenders. You simply need to ask the wait staff what they have available for the kids. When my DS was younger and wasn't a very adventurous eater, we would regularly pay excrutiatingly high prices for things like bread, fruit and bagels in order to have the character meal or other special meal experiences (like O'hana). It is what it is. You are paying for the experience as much as the food.

You can only do this if they are under 3. They usually will offer you other choices for the kids - when we were there last month, the waitress asked if my son (3) wanted grilled cheese or chicken nuggets. I declined, since he is a good eater, but it was offered.

That's essentially going to a buffet, paying for 2 people, and having 4 people eat.

That doesn't make any sense. You won't be allowed to do that at any buffet/family style restaurant.

Not ever allowed.

Tell them whatever you like; you will still be billed for both children at AYCTE meals and buffets.

The only way to keep the price down is to dine without them ;)

Seriously though, we've kept Ohana off our list for awhile. If we have Free Dining we will go as a family, otherwise it's a place we visit on kid-free trips to WDW.

There are kids clubs you can send the kids to if you want a date night, though.

even if they sit there and eat nothing, they will still be charged. it is the only way to keep it fair for everyone - otherwise you put the CMs in the position of having to judge whether someone is eating enough to quality for the next price level up and guests in the position of trying to game the system. I am not normally a fan of slippery slope arguments but this is a definite slippery slope!

I think under 3 is not charged, but everyone over that will have to pay.

Again I reiterate, they DO offer selections for children. Just ask because they aren't on any official menu.
They do, and there is also a discounted kid's price. Which is still a lot anywhere but Disney for a kid's meal but is on par with other AYCTE experiences for the kiddos

But they aren't as expensive at the regular Ohana menu for a child.

If these options don't work, then the OP should, respectfully, eat somewhere they can afford or drop the kids at one of the kids' clubs. A child eating off your plate is still a child eating.

I thought there was only one AYCTE price for kids and they will bring you off menu kid food if you ask - not that there is an a la carte menu at a lower price.

You're correct. The alternate kid selections aren't an a la carte menu. They're part of the AYCTE pricing.

The choices at Ohana are "pay the kid price and have them eat the food," "pay the kid price and have them get chicken tenders and similar," or "lock them in a closet." The Kid's Clubs are more expensive than Ohana's kid price, although it does include dinner+babysitting.

I'm not certain what they cost - I don't think we were charged $21 for macaroni and cheese the one time we got it. But I can't guarantee that as I don't usually pay attention.

I just think instead of worrying about the cost, eat somewhere cheaper or don't take the kids with you.
