Ohana & CP Shrimp question!

Hello,

I was wondering if the Shrimp served at Ohana and Crystal Palace dinner buffet are deveined? I love shrimp and was excited last year that H&V had shrimp on their buffet, but I was totally disappointed when I saw that they were'nt deveined, gross! I just can't eat them with that black poop string still in, does undeveined shrimp bother anyone else? I have an ADR for CP that I plan to keep and would like to make one for Ohana, but since Ohana menu is so small, I don't want to make an ADR there if we're not gonna eat the shrimp. Thanks in advance for your time!

I don't think the shrimp at Ohanas was deveined. As a matter of fact if I remember correctly you had to removed quite a bit to get to the shrimp if you know what I mean. But they were great...DD14 ate a whole plate herself!

The food at O'hana is fabulous and given the way it is cooked over a wood burning fire, I am not sure if you could tell if it was deveined or not. Truthfully though, there is enough food that even if you didn't eat the shrimp you would enjoy it. You could also use your fork and pull the vein off as well if it does bother you.

The shrimp are no longer cooked on an open fire. One of the bad changes at 'Ohana was that the shrimp are cooked in Kona's and served in a bowl drowning in sauce and they are not deveined.

Really? When did that happen? That was one of the best things about that place... I loved the smoky goodness. THat and the wings were AMAZING!!! When did they make that change?

The menu changed at 'Ohana around mid-year 2005. I disagree that it was a "bad change" though- the shrimp were YUMMY!!! I don't think they are deveined, though- you have to peel off the shell to eat them.

Must have been after June... We went in June and LOVED the old way. That is a bit of a disappointment.

I saw they had Turkey on the menu now? Is that Sliced turkey or legs?

I will have to try but it is not a top on my list to revisit now.

Well, my husband and I don't even eat shrimp and we left 'Ohana stuffed!!

Between wonton chips & sauce, glazed wings, salad, au gratin potatoes, stir fried veggies, steak, turkey, sausage, pork and a huge dessert there are plenty of wonderful things to eat. Plus, it's all you can eat.

The thing is, if I go, the only meat I would eat is the glazed wings. I don't like the other meats they serve. I have been to several restaurants that serve peel and eat shrimp, and they are deveined. Not sure if I'll make an ADR here or not, I would love to experience the atmosphere at Ohana, so we'll see.

IMO, if there is so little there you would want to eat, I definitely wouldn't eat there. You could go to the bar and have a fruity drink or two- then, you would get to experience the atmosphere, but wouldn't be stuck with a meal you probably wouldn't like too much. You could head over to Kona Cafe for dinner after a Lapu Lapu at 'Ohana!

If you are eating peel and eat shrimp, you are consuming the vein. This is not "poop" as stated by the OP, but rather the upper digestive tract of the shrimp. The reason you are not finding the vein easily in most peel and eat shrimp is based on two important factors: 1. the shrimp are farm raised and fed specific diets so that the vein remains translucent; 2. the vein, like the overall color of shrimp, goes through a change during the cooking process where coloration and pigment are neutralized or the color effectively changes, you will not see pink shrimp swimming anywhere but a boiling pot.

This is why I am asking the question about the shrimp! Wanted to know if they were peeled or split down the back. I know if whole, they are not deveined. Thanks for your response, I have found the answer I needed.

I have seen raw shrimp in the frozen food section of Costco that are deveined but not peeled. The backs are slit and the vein removed. I was hoping this was the case in the shrimp at Ohana because I do not like shrimp that has not been deveined.

My DD suggested that I bring a plastic shrimp deveiner with me when we go. You could probably get one in a fish market pretty cheap!

I agree with OP....non-deveined shrimp are just not appetizing to me....to think the shrimp are now cooked with their poop inside just turns my stomach.....poop cooked or raw is just plain old poop......not edible in my opinion

Agreed. I think OP just didn't realize she ate the vein. I never understood people having an issue with that. We like eggs and we all know what part of the Chicken's body those come from.

Well many would argue that cutting the shell and deveining robs the shrimp of flavor. It is the same principle of bone-in vs boneless meat. Bone-in will ALWAYS have a much better flavor. I like that they don't devein.

That's the whole point. You and the original poster don't understand what the Vein is... IT ISN"T THE POOP. Read the post above for a really good explanation.

Ok, Bad habit of mine, I always refer to the black vein as "poop". I am aware that it's the shrimps intestinal tract, and therefore holds the shrimp bodily "waste". The black string is the shrimps intestines, this is why i referred to it as "poop". Maybe the vein does enhance the flavor for some people, I just don't like it. I can see why a Buffet does'nt take the time to clean them since buffet style eating is suppose to be a bargin, more Upscale restaurants never serve them undeveined, at least to my knowledge.
