Oh why can't we be in a cozy dvc villa right now?!!!

We're in reston about 26 inches and wishing we were down at Kidani :-)

In Falls Church, VA ... 8 miles west of the White House...and it's really weird looking outside...all the shrub and low-lying tree branches are bent way over, creating a shrouded white/grey landscape that defies description...I've never seen anything like it...

I suppose it's pretty...but it's too strange looking for "pretty" to sink in...

Judique; We are in Clinton, Maryland and thankfully, we still have heat, as there are several hundred thousand customers with power outages in the dc-md-va area. I've lost two tall (30 plus feet) cedar trees over night - the weight of the snow has them on the ground.

We lived in Colorado for over 25 years and when it snowed that much, you would go out with a broom and knock the snow off of your trees and bushes. That way you might be able to save them. I know the snow is deep now, but it's just going to get worse. Good luck!

P.S. Try not to stand under the tree limb that has all of the snow on it as you'll get buried when you knock off the snow. :rotfl:

I feel for you guys south of us. We only got about 6 or 7 inches up here (we're about 100 mi. north of Phila). Still, I wish I was getting my exercise walking around SSR instead of shoveling the driveway.

A friend of mine is headed to Baltimore for a cruise that leaves tomorrow. She may not be able to get to her hotel tonight and I'm thinking her cruise may be delayed. I hear they're expecting high winds and rough water. Uggh! My SIL is supposed to leave Dulles today for Thailand....she may not be leaving until tomorrow.

Stay safe everyone!

We live in Cape May county NJ thankfully we have power its flickered on and off but so far we are good. The snow stopped for about an hour or so but its back in full force. I just heard it could keep snowing until around midnight now. Way too much snow for us. We are leaving in 32 days for WDW why couldn't it be tomorrow?? I guess thats what we get for being cocky about missing the Dec storm we left 2 days before they got 9in here.

WHAT? No pictures of this one?!

(PS) sorry about your trees - that bites

Thanks!

On a sunnier note, I just got off the phone after talking with Stuart from MS who was able to book me my first week next year at Boardwalk Villas! I'm usually late booking and end up waitlisting, etc, so due to the snow - I was able to start thinking of next year's winter visit. Maybe I should be thinking February instead of January...............

:woohoo:

Bless the wonderful folks at Disney...

Today, our airline let us check in and print boarding passes...check again at 4, to be sure, cuz MS was closing at 5...all was good to go.

At 6, they canceled our flight.

Got on a new flight Monday...now how to salvage our reservation, w/MS closed?

Called the Contemporary (we're staying at BLT)...they are holding our reservation til our arrival on Monday...

Bless them; bless them; bless them...now, on to praying that we get out Monday!

Power blew for about 2 minutes, came back on w/a mighty surge that "fried" several outlets (but no electronics/appliances)...restrung power cords, extension cords and surge protectors...back online; tv running...two hours later, cable (tv and internet access) went down (on laptop w/air card now)...then, land lines went dead...

BUT...we still have heat, lights, DVD player, laptop-with-aircard...and a 4-night (not as good as 5 nights but a whole lot better than no nights!) trip to Disney...

Oh me oh my. Yes, indeed, this storm was the "Snowpocalypse!"

Sorry to hear of everyone's experiences...Looks like most here commenting don't generally have to deal with snow. Here in central/northern NY we regularly get snow like that...lots of lake effect; and if no snow, then the negative temperatures.
Guess it makes sense that NY is the number 1 state having the most DVC members. Looking at the pictures "Annie" has posted is like looking out our front door for 4-5 months of the year.Hope everyone is able to get through this safely. :thumbsup2

And to edk35...Thanks for this thread....we can always count on you to post a warm, fuzzy picture in our minds amid various setbacks :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Well, it's not to be...

Our flight for tomorrow just got canceled...getting ready to call MS to cancel the whole trip (we can't get out before Tues, when another storm is due to hit DC--this time w/6 inches or so, also enough to close things down)...

I did call MS this morning, simply to report what the Contemporary had done for us last night...they returned my Sunday night points (in holding)...now the points for the whole trip will be in holding, but fortunately for me, my use year is Feb, so I have til 1/31 to use them...

I'm seriously sad...but things could be so much worse...it'll be ok...

I am so sorry you are going through this and missing your visit.

I am in a similar points situation as I booked some nights for my daughter's best friend and her two sisters. They are supposed to fly out of BWI tomorrow morning. The flight has NOT been cancelled yet. I am seriously doubting that they will get out. It's only a three night trip, so the points are no big deal - just feel bad for the girls as they've been without power since Friday evening until just an hour ago (Ann Arundel area) and now their trip is shaky. Maybe they'll get lucky and lift off on schedule and also beat Tuesday's storm. They are flying Airtran.

I'm sorry. I would try to get the points out of holding....maybe something can be done for you.

YAY! They plowed our street today! So we finished digging out the driveway apron and we're good to go now. I became worried about our magonolia tree with the weight of the snow (it's young - only about 5 yrs) so I finally trudged thru to it with a broom. :rotfl: I thought I was stuck for a few minutes 'cuz at one point I went in up to my waist! I had to use the broom to pull myself back up. Anyway, I was too late - we had 2 "major" branches break off on one side, one above the other. So now it is lopsided and "naked" as it has a huge gap.

DMKEDM - I am sorry for your trip being cancelled. Hope your next trip works out better!

Our kids have had 5 snow days this past week. Everytime we get a big storm like this, all I can think is, man I should have hauled them down to Orlando. DH never gets off from work for weather, so he couldn't come. The one time I took our older dd to Orlando solo, I spent the week turning around, to point something out to dh (who was stuck at home). I think it's a sign he's meant to come with us.

We still have not ventured into the outside world yet....but I now get another snow day!! Yea! Our work is closed tomorrow, and that's a good thing since all commuter rail service is also cancelled from here to Union Station. So another day of rest.

Awww, I'm sorry to hear everyone had a rough time of it. We got nailed with just under 3 feet of snow (in western Howard Co, MD) but we went into the weekend with a plan.

  • Extra grocery shopping to get enough supplies for a week (including superbowl)
  • Fill up the water jugs in case power cuts out (we're on well water)
  • Stock up on the flashlights and batteries
  • Get the gas fireplace burning
  • Have a mixture of books, movies, etc. to entertain
  • And make sure we're on the list to have the driveway shoveled out when the storm finishes. (Costs a small fortune but having a guy with a front loader and a couple teenage boys to dig out the car are sooo worth it.)

We spent the blizzard watching local news, enjoying old BritComs, flipping on the outside Christmas lights (they're winter lights now) and checking in on family, friends and neighbors by whatever was handy (e-mail, skype, phone, text message).

As a rule we don't plan any trips January-March. It's too cold where we want to go (even Disney) and it's much better to hibernate at home.

We got some fabulous photos of the neighborhood. All that white stuff may have been a pain to clear but boy is it beautiful.

Enjoying the winter train garden the morning after the snowfall. It's like we are in a winter village ourselves. Check out the snow clinging to the windowsills and trees that look lined with buffalo snow.

Before the bulk of the storm hit. Mickey is now a "Hidden Mickey" on our back porch.

Hello, from snowy Occoquan, VA! I'm up on a hill which is usually pretty treacherous and have not ventured down it yet. The Federal Government is closed today(Monday) and they are calling for possibly 10 more inches from the storm that's coming tomorrow(Tuesday) afternoon into Wed. morning. Gaaah!
All I can say is....."UNCLE!" :worship:

Update on my own post:

My girls got to the airport and their flight left BWI this morning - one of very few! They will land in Orlando in less then 10 minutes! Yay Airtran!!! BWI only had one runway open since yesterday evening.

Now - hopefully they won't have a problem returning Thursday night........................

And for those on waitlists and booking last minute - we were able to get them this Savannah View at Jambo House in AKL about 3 weeks ago.

We leave on March 6th and I worry that snow will delay or prevent our departure. I don't usually plan a trip until at least late March, but this year my niece is coming with us and this week is her spring break week.

I'm in Central NJ and we had about 8 inches this weekend. Doesn't sound like much compared to those in the DC area, but when it was falling, it was like a blizzard -- very windy -- and there was no traveling to be done. All I kept thinking was that if it was 4 weeks later, our flight would have been cancelled.

Now, I hear the next storm coming on Tuesday night/Wednesday is going to be much bigger, with higher accumulations. Ugh! Snow - go away!

We are leaving March 10th our of AC and we are in South Jersey where we got much more then 8in. Heck my kids have no school again tomorrow because they have no power yet down where they go. UGHHH I can not wait for winter to be over. We have our fingers and toes crossed that this all ends before we leave. I will walk if I have to LOL

Anyone in MD remember the City commercials after the 95-96 blizzards? They aired around April after several killer storms had pummeled us over the winter. It starred all the snow removal and emergency crews wheeling out their plows, stripped down to shorts & t-shirts and dancing to Heat Wave. It was hilarious.

I'm dubbing the next storm the "Knock Out Punch".
