As most know, I just lost my father in law this past Saturday. So I definitely feel the need to take the kids on vacation. DH got a new job and cant get time off, so I was going to take them alone during our free dining trip. Now, today I get to work and a WONDERFUL co-worker is giving me 120 pts to use. He cant bank them and wont get to use them. Free of charge! He said he can turn them into reservation pts or keep as DVC pts. We have me and 4 kids (11, 9, 7 and 5) I booked airfare today (got a great price of $155 R/T!) so my dates are set, 9/17-9/24. How can get get the best deal? Turn them to reservation pts or keep as DVC? And if I keep as DVC, any 1bdr units to fit 5 of us or will we have to go to a 2bdr?

Wow! What a generous gift. Now, assuming there are any 1 bedroom units left this late in the game, a Wednesday-Wednesday 7 night stay at OKW would run you 160 points. I think that if you tell them up front that it will be one adult and four children they shouldn't give you any grief. They will just reiterate the fact that bedding and towels will only be provided for four.

I hope that things work out for you. You and your family will have a wonderful time no matter what accomodations you end up with.

Only AKV has capacity for 5 in a one bedroom for people the ages you listed in the OP. Any other one bedroom would be against the rules for occupancy of 5.

Yes, what a very generous gift. They will expire but I told him he could rent them out here or even let me pay him.. he said nope, he just wants to help me save some money.. I was able to call DVC but they wouldnt give me availability. They did say that some will let 5 stay but not provide bedding for them.

That is true, the reservations, DDP if you want it (it is NOT free for DVC) and Magical Express airport transfers will all have to be book for you by the member. Member Services does not generally speak with non-owners about any issue. You can make your own dining reservations by calling the regular dining number.

If you can get away with staying in a 1 bedroom it will most certainly make those 120 points stretch a bit farther. I say go for a DVC resort and enjoy what you can with those 120.

And what an awesome gift!!

First, 120 points not enough for your entire stay. So you will either have to pay for the remaining days at the DVC or move to a different resort and pay. Friday and Saturday nights a lot more points than the rest of the days.

First if you are staying at OKW
Option 1
Wed-Sat nights in a one bedroom - 112 points
Sun-Tue nights - cash wherever you want

Option 2
Wed-Fri nights - cash whereever you want
Sat-Tues nights in two bedroom - 120 points

Option 3
Wed-Thurs and Sun-Tues nights in 2 bedroom - 110 points
Fri-Sat nights - cash wherever you want
requires two moves if you do not want to pay cash for OKW 2 bedroom

Second if you are staying at SSR
Option 1
Wed-Fri nights in two bedroom - 108 points
Sat-Tues nights - cash wherever you want

Option 2
Wed-Fri nights - cash wherever you want
Sat-Tues nights in one bedroom - 102 points

Option 3
Wed-Thurs and Sun-Tues nights in one bedroom - 100 points
Fri-Sat nights - cash wherever you want
requires two moves if you do not want to pay cash for SSR 1 bedroom

Third if you are staying at VWL, BWV, BCV
Option 1
Wed-Fri nights in two bedroom - 120 points
Sat-Tues nights - cash wherever you want

Option 2
Wed-Fri nights - cash wherever you want
Sat-Tues nights in one bedroom - 111 points

Option 3
Wed-Thurs and Sun-Tues nights in one bedroom - 110 points
Fri-Sat nights - cash wherever you want
requires two moves if you do not want to pay cash for 1 bedroom

Fourth if you are staying AKV, Savananh view
Option 1
Wed-Fri nights in two bedroom - 120 points
Sat-Tues nights - cash wherever you want

Option 2
Wed-Fri nights - cash wherever you want
Sat-Tues nights in one bedroom - 114 points

Option 3
Wed-Thurs and Sun-Tues nights in one bedroom - 115 points
Fri-Sat nights - cash wherever you want
requires two moves if you do not want to pay cash for 1 bedroom

Fifith if you are staying AKV, Standard view
Option 1
Wed-Fri nights in two bedroom - 95 points
Sat-Tues nights - cash wherever you want

Option 2
Wed-Fri nights - cash wherever you want
Sat-Tues nights in two bedroom - 118 points

Option 3
Wed-Thurs and Sun-Tues nights in two bedroom - 115 points
Fri-Sat nights - cash wherever you want
requires two moves if you do not want to pay cash for 2 bedroom

I didn't bother with AKV Value, BWV Std view since there is probably no availability

for reservation points there is a $95 fee to book and you will get only a room - no kitchen, washer/dryer, etc
For Port Orleans (only moderate that will fit 5)
Option 1
Wed-Sun nights, std view - 108 points
Mon-Tues nights - cash wherever you want

Option 2
Wed-Thurs nights - cash wherever you want
Fri-Tues nights, std view - 108 points

Option 3
all nights except Fri or Sat, std view - 110
Fri or Sat - cash wherever you want

For Ft Wilderness cabin
Option 1
Wed-Fri nights - 110 points
Sat-Tues nights - cash

Option 2
Wed-Sat nights - cash
Sun-Tues nights - 87 points

Option 3
Wed-Thur, Mon-Tues - 116 points
Fri-Sun - cash

Contemporary
Option 1
Wed-Fri nights, garden std view - 114 points
Sat-Tues - cash

Option 2
Wed-Sat nights - cash
Sun-Tues nights, garden std view - 90 points, garden view - 102 points

Option 3
Wed-Thur, Mon-Tues, garden std view - 120 points
Fri-Sun - cash

Yacht Club, Polynesian and Grand Floridian or the tower views at Contemporary use so many points that you will only get two nights, and they can't be Fri or Sat

If you went with OKW option 2 (Start elsewhere and end up for four nights in OKW 2 bedroom), you can get a family suite at All Star Music for 3 nights for $624. There is availability on web right now. If you stay the three nights at OKW 2 bedroom, it would be $1789.

Good luck in figuring out what you want to do.

Karen

One more follow up - if you are going to pay for OKW 2 bedroom, you should probably do option 3 - paying for the weekend and using the points for the other 5 days. This will cost $1193. You will have to check-in on Fri morn and Sun morn, but as long as you note your other reservations, you will likely not need to move.

Karen... I just wanted to say WTG to help out a fellow DISer!!

The work that went into the above list..... :worship:

You deserve a big hug :grouphug:

Before you think about options, the member needs to find out what is available at this point. You should not have a problem with 5 in a 1 bedroom, there is another thread on this.

Thank you for that Karen! We do have free dining booked at POR so dates can be adjusted if need be! So doing a pt/cash stay wouldnt be hard! Now, I am seeing certain availability on Disney CRO (like for WL).. is the availability the same for DVC rentals? I thought I read somewhere that at the 60day mark, they do open it up to CRO and its a first come first serve basis (DVC pts vs cash).

Actually, I get to use 175 points!

Availability via CRO tells you nothing about availability by points. They are two separate inventories. The only way you know what is available is if the member calls. While Sept is the lowest usage time so you have the best chance of having something available, DVC does fill up way in advance. I would bet that SSR is most likely to have availability followed by OKW. It is common that CRO has availbility due to member tradeouts, but there is nothing available via points.

You will be giving up free dining if you choose to use the points (even if you choose to use the points at POR). You will have to decide if it is worth it. Because you have free dining, I would probably use the points at the end of my vacation since you might be ready to ease off on the eating by then. Plus it is easier to move from a room to a villa than vice versa.

175 points is enough for the full week at OKW in 1 bedroom (160) or the last five nights in 2 bedroom (174). It is enough for last 6 nights in SSR one bedroom (162) or last 4 nights in 2 bedroom (135). At VWL, BWV, BCV it is enough for last 5 nights in 1 bedroom or last 4 nights in 2 bedroom. At AKV Savanah view, you can get 5 nights in 1 bedroom (only one with beds for 5) (159) or 4 nights in 2 bedroom (150).

Thats what I found.. that tangrel site for how many points. He is going to try and get the full stay in a 1bdr at OKW. I would rather pay OOP for food (I know the kids arent going to want to do a ton of sit down/buffet meals since Dad isnt with us). So I would rather have my room paid for and eat OOP as the kids are pickers anyway. I will do 3 buffet restaurants that I wanted to do anyway (the Lilo/Stitch breakfast, Boma and the dinner buffet at Poly) and then eat CS meals.. which is fine by us! Its going to be hot so I know we wont want to be stuffed! I appreciate your help Karen! I have been looking to buy into DVC anyway so this gives me a good insight into it!

Karen - That was so nice of you figuring out all those points.

What a wonderful group of people, always willing to help out! That is why I love the Disboards! :cheer2:
