I cooked and shredded 3 lbs of chicken Sunday night to freeze and accidentally put in the fridge instead! I just found it tonight - it smells okay - is it okay to freeze now? I hate to waste all that money!

When in doubt, throw it out.I know it's hard to get rid of that amount, but better safe than sorry.;)

I'm pretty liberal about this kind of thing, but I would toss it too.

Well I just had a chicken salad sandwich today that was made last Sunday and I'm feeling fine. :rotfl2: I think if it smells ok, you are good to go! :thumbsup2

Every Sunday I make chicken to have in my salads for lunch from Mon - Fri...ihave done this for years and have never had the chicken go bad by Fri so I think it should be fine to freeze. It if had not been cooked that might have been another story.

It depends on how safe you would feel using it later. I would give it touch smell test - if it feel slimey or smelly I would get rid of it.

Or you can use yourself as a guiney pig and take a sample of it right before putting it in the freezer and if you are still feeling well in 24 hours feel free to use it once defrosted!

4 days is probably absolutely fine. More than 5, probably not. I would make sure when it was defrosted that it was heated to at least 160 degrees and not eat it unheated. So, no chicken salad or anything like that.

My concern would be that I think that bacteria isn't entirely halted by freezing so it has. 5 day bacterial headstart. So while it might be fine today I wouldn't trust it in the future. If that makes sense.

Throw it out...especially chicken!! Would it really be worth the money to get that ill???:scared1:

Better safe than sorry..I wouldn't. Might be fine, but the bacterial load could be really high at 5 days. It grows logrithmically - so it goes the first couple of days it goes from a couple to 10,000 then in the next couple it goes from 10,000 to millions... And then it keeps growing in the freezer, just at a much lower rate. Sorry, I know it a bummer!

Interesting explanation. I had a tiny piece if info, lol.

But if I freeze it and cook it later in a casserole, won't that kill any germs?
I always ask my mom these questions, and she thinks we women are ridiculous these days. She said she always thawed all her meats on the counter all day, never threw anything out unless it was smelly or slimy and none of us ever got food poisoning!

Your Mom sounds like mine!!!! However, I would toss the chicken, I was sick with food poisoning around five years ago and if when I was in the midst of it if, I would have paid any amount of money for it to go away......
