We leave for our first Ft Wilderness trip in two weeks and my 11 year old broke his arm at school Wed!!! He had to have surgery yesterday, he fractured the humeral head, he is in this big bulky sling for 6 weeks!!!!! What do I do, should I push the vacation back? I would hate to take him and he not enjoy himself, he won't be able to enjoy that brand new slide! He won't be able to ride the really fun rides, I just don't know what to do!!!!!

So sorry to hear about your son! I hope he recovers quickly!

The decision to push your trip back or not is a tough one... personally, I would say if you could push it back so he can be fully recovered and enjoy everything to the fullest, that is what I would do. But if not, one of the best places to recover is Disney- going there always makes me feel better no matter how upset I am!

i AM SO SORRY.. when i was 8 i managed to break my arm 2 days after we got home from disney.......

I personally would wait to go... just so he does not feel left out.... I know i never want to have to restart counting the days to go to disney but... that is what I would do.... hoping he feels better soon

I am sooooo sorry for you and your family. I can't even imagine being in a situation like this. That's a really tough decision. I think I would postpone the trip so he can enjoy everything. I am not sure though. Good luck on your decision and we wish him a very speedy recovery.

The same thing happened to us way back in the late 80s when my then 8 year old son broke his arm a week before our trip. We were traveling with 3 other families and camping at FW. We also had an 11 year old and decided to continue on the trip. We sent the older son to the water park with the other families and just enjoyed the campground with the other. He was disappointed, of course, but he was just so EXCITED to be at WDW. To this day we have his cast which was signed by all the characters he met while there. It really is cool to look at it after all these years. We also made a return trip about 5 years later so he could do all those things he missed out on.
P.S. We would have returned sooner, but we made other trips out west to Oregon, Colorado, and other states between Louisiana and there. Good luck making a decision.

My son, now 17 broke his arm while rollerskating in the loops at Fort Wilderness. He was 10. We had just arrived and had another 3 weeks ahead of us at the Fort and then a week at a beach on the coast near CapeCanaveral. I just asked him if he would have wanted us to cancel and reschedule that vacation had he broken his arm before we left and he said "no". I asked him if he felt deprived or had a bad time and he said no, he loved getting his cast signed by cast members and characters. He kept the cast with all the signatures and it has a place of honor on his dresser with his other keepsakes. There was no slide at the pool at the time and he couldn't get the cast wet, but he still had a great time! I think you need to decide what's best for you and your family--maybe ask your son. I hope his recovery is easy.

Sorry about your son. Question the Dr about a waterproof cast. I know they have them now. I wouldn't cancel the trip. Think about all the sympathy he'll get from the CM's and characters. He'll probably think it's great.

My daughter broke her arm 5 years ago, at the end of June, they could not put a waterproof cast for some reason, but we bought her a waterproof sleeve for the cast, she swam did everything with it, after the first week, she could completely confortable with it, and did everything she wanted to. So wait a few days and see how your son is, he might feel just fine going to DW.
I am truly sorry that he did break his arm, and do hope that he feels better soon.

Here is what our house said
17 yr old said that he would still go. Said he wouldn't need to drag along the chick magnet (the 3 yr old) to get all the girls attention.

Husband - would still go. No way would he disappoint everyone else who was looking forward to the trip.

3 and 4 yr old - yeah were going to Disney!

Me - I would ask the doctor and if he gave the go ahead, I would go.
