Whatever will I do now on my lunch hour? I always bring my lunch and DIS during that time. So I save calories and money!
Can I sue my company when I am now forced to go out to lunch since I have no entertainment... gain weight... spend money...and become depressed?
Surely our fellow DIS'ers can give me some legal advice :p
I can't believe my company was sophisticated enough to block this!
Now, my evenings will be playing catch up!

Well, maybe you can play around with the computer and find a back door, or a way to get in! :rotfl2:

If you can, install the AOL software on your computer, and go in that way. Unless you either can't install the software, don't have/want an account, or they've also blocked AOL.

You can also talk to someone in your I/T department to find out "WHY" it was blocked. This happened to me at the job I recently left. I suddenly was blocked from getting to the site of a friend who is a professional photographer. He would often ask my opinion on shots before he submitted them for publication, and suddenly I couldn't get to them! So I called our director of corporate security and asked what was going on. Apparantly the company subscribed to a service which automatically blocked ranges of IP addresses belonging to hosting companies if they got a single complaint about inappropriate content. The web site that the CEO used to order gourmet lunches for his weekend fishing trips had been blocked the week before. (oops!) :rolleyes1 Within fifteen minutes the DoS had my friends site unblocked.

I am just waiting for this to happen to me. They have blocked everything else here but message boards probably because we watch them somewhat for rumors and news.

You're more disciplined than I am - I don't just DIS during my lunch hour. :rolleyes1

Shame on your company - not a nice thing to do at all! ;)

obviously there's a reason the compnay blocked the DIs. it's their computer, not there for the OP's personal use, and they can blcok what they want. most companies won't allow you to download software.

and if the IT people are monitoring web activity, suing the "back door" methods" will raise huge red flags. not a wise idea.

Sometimes you can get through to the blocked sites by using a search engine. Let us know what happens!

There is no back door. Your companies outbound traffic goes through a central point, often called a proxy server. It is there that you are being blocked. Many proxy servers come out of the box blocking quite a few obviously non-work related sites. Ours blocks ESPN, alot of the Yahoo sites, foodtv, etc. Also if someone sees a lot of traffic to an non-work related site, it can be added.

Consider yourself lucky you haven't been reprimanded, assuming there is a policy against it. Many places prohibit personal use, even during lunch, breaks, or after hours.

ITA. Not worth the chance to me.

My college used to block napster, way back in the days of napster. If I signed onto a friends AOL account I would be able to get around the firewall and could then download music from napster. I really shouldnt have done that. Thinking back now I def could have been expelled! :scared1:

Using a backdoor would be a bad idea. I know at our company, this would be grounds for termination. This DIS is a great place, but its not worth your job. I wouldn't take the chance.

It will give you something to look forward to when you get home each day. Best not to try and circumvent the campany's policies, not worth losing your job over.

I think I got "infected" from the DIS last year on my old laptop--2 trojan viruses that really messed it up. It hasn't happened again, but maybe that is why? Not that it happened, but that they were worried?

I agree too. Plus good thing you're not me. Whenever I go to my fiance's house, he has 56k. That makes it almost impossible for me to go on the DIS, 'cause the modem's too slow. :p
