Oh, no, they REALLY named their kid that??

My grandmother was an OB nurse in the 30's and she always told us the story of a woman who wanted to name her twins Cash & Cary (for those of you old enough to know what that is). The doc refused to sign the birth certs. Couldn't get away with that now. And here is the proof - a friend of mine worked OB for awhile in the 80's and told of a woman who actually named her twin girls Regina (think capital of Saskatchewan) and the rhyming female part! :scared1:

When I was teaching, I had an El Camino.

Then there was the kid whose name was pronounced "Day-mon".....but they spelled it Demon.

And there was Jonathan......whose Dad was furious because we pronounced it like "Johnathan'.....when it was to be pronounced "Jo Nathan", 2 separate words.

Speaking of names in the jail report, this one had me lmbo! Howell V. Little.

Fort Wayne, Indiana had a mayor named Harry Baals.

Personally, I have no problem with the name Darsheet (replace ee with i).

Uncommon spellings of common names have tripped me up a couple of times recent.
Eriika instead of Erika or Erica.
Mellisa instead of Melissa.

Some of the made up names get me too....like Girlscoutcookieisha.

There is actually a website I found that lists a lot of crazy names.... including Watermelonisha and Obamaniqua, among others...

I work in a call center so I've see a LOT of names like this...I've had a spanish woman whose name was Mari Juana, a guy named Harry Bohlz, and also Harry (nickname for Richard). I also heard on the radio one day, a woman called in and said her daughter's name was Cialis. She had no idea what that actually was...she said she heard it in a commercial one day and thought it was a pretty name so she just went with it....:confused3

And while we're on the topic...it always cracks me up when we get calls from groups that outsource, and the reps try to give us Americanized names.... We actually started a Wall of Fame, listing all of the "celebrities" that have called us over the years... We're required to ask for a first name and last initial for documentation purposes so they usually say something like "John S as in Smith" but with celeb names...We've had:
Elvis P as in Presley
Prince...no last initial
Michael J as in Jackson
Jack S as in Sparrow
Harry P as in Potter
and a ton more...we literally have 3 posterboards full of names and pictures we printed off of the web

Ohh!! And I forgot to mention...when my DBF was an after school program teacher, he had a girl in his class whose name was spelled "ESCALADE" but prounced "ES-CA-LA-DAY"

I'm somewhat uncomfortable with the whole concept of "Ghetto Names" and I don't see any reason to consider that website a legitimate source. There's nothing to stop anyone from thinking up the most "hilarious" name they can imagine and then send it in for giggles.

"Look at those dumb ghetto people. They name their kids all kinds of crazy things."

And naming them after watermelons and Obama...? No racial implications, there.

Me, I like making fun of people above me on the social scale, like politicians. Not below, like folks living in ghettos.

I have hesitated posting about this, but it's driving me crazy. Our younger dd who's in preschool had a new little guy join her class. I said hi to all the kids when I went to pick her up. Now my hearing isn't the greatest, so I hope I heard this wrong, but the new little guy I said hi to, the teacher said his name is VEX. I hope she said BEX. Still a little strange, but not VEX. If it is Vex, I just think that's cruel. Like naming your child, "irritating" or "annoying". I'll let you guys know next week when I go back again.

We have a Jurzie and a Colt in our family. Some people thing they are strange names but I guess they have grown on me and I don't think anything of it.

This one I would just wait and see. Was his speech clear? Just wondering because my poor boys had speech issues in preschool and talk about the most unintentional mean thing -- I named my kid Kyle and he had the hardest time with his K's, so poor thing, he would say his name and he got all sorts of different responses back (most common was Tyler (with a ? in their voice) -- but 1/2 the time it did sound like he was saying "Tile" -- I wonder how many people thought I actually named him that!!! :lmao:)

Or our local politician Richard Swett (and he uses the shortened version starting with a "D").

so like, did people say they voted to put ________ in office? I shook hands with_________? I'm sorry , it's late and his name is cracking me up...:rotfl:

Maybe it wax Lex.

You have a point...there is nothing to stop people from just submitting anything they find funny or "ghetto"... but if you google "Watermelonisha" you will see several different Facebook profiles for women with that name. Again, nothing says that's their real name...but considering some of the names of some people I've actually MET... it's not unlikely.

ETA: I actually just re-googled and it DOES appear that they're actually nicknames or just fake profiles. Just wanted to say again that you have a point!

bECKY 2OO5 AND Flightless Duck, I'm hoping I heard it wrong. Their teacher spelled it out to me, because I thought I was hearing it wrong. Bex, wouldn't be bad at all, but Vex? Anyway, I'll see her this week.

I have a definite bias towards, "easy to spell easy to say, doesn't rhyme with anything rude"
just my own "would it pass the playground rule"?

I've had to spell my name my entire life, and it's irritating. When we chose our girls' names, we tried to choose, easy to spell, easy to say. I feel there are definitely better things to use my energy on than names.

Maybe it is Bex after the nickname for David Beckham?? Doesn't the media call him Becks for short? :confused3 This reminds of people who nickname their kids boo-boo....I hear it all the time and it just bothers me. I know they don't mean it in that sense, but it still just irks me!

:lmao: OK...it may be the age of the parents though because when I read this -- All I heard was Yogi Bear's voice going "Hey Boo Boo....." didn't even register anything else until I read it again and it clicked what you were thinking with your "don't mean it in that sense".

No, there is a girl who is my age (I'm 28) and she became pregnant in her senior year. She always called her daughter "Boo-Boo" and I couldn't help but think she was reinforcing that her kid was a mistake or an accident. I hear people I don't know say it to their kids like in the grocery store or whatever...and again, I'm sure they don't mean to be calling their kids an accident or a mistake, but it just sounds so wrong to me!
