Oh no! Not the Selfie-Sticks...

The only annoyance I found with people using "selfie sticks" this past trip was when they were being used in a narrow walkway and foot traffic had to come to a standstill until the photo session was completed. The picture takers were oblivious to the congestion they were causing. Most of the time I was amused. A recent poll on Theme Park Insider asked members if they were in favor of banning "selfie sticks"..of the 1192 people voting, 79% answered "yes".

But they'll all argue they're not hitting anyone with it. Of course not, because you're stopping all traffic with it! "It's all about meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

Selfie sticks should be banned on rides. Period. For every considerate selfie stick user that only uses it if they are sitting in the back, or asks other riders if it bothers them, there are 10 selfish users that don't care that there selfie stick blocking someone else's view. Sorry for the responsible users, but like so many other things in life the selfish people ruin it for everyone.

That's because people let them stop the flow of traffic. I don't block traffic and trust me no one is going to stop me. Same with having someone take your picture. I give a 5 count to get it done and then I'm walking. Actually those instances can be worse than a stick. The stick is 3 feet away compared to the "photographer" who stands 15 feet away and takes 20-30 seconds to frame a picture all the while waving everyone away.

Maybe I am a jerk, but I wouldn't allow it to stop me. Sorry, you don't get to block the whole walkway just to take a dang picture. I will be willing to give you what SHOULD be enough time to snap a fast pic. After that, move or I will be walking through anyway. "Forcing" a bunch of people to stop for you and have to wait who knows how long so you can take a pic is just rude. And I am tired of being expected to allow rude people to continue doing it.

I think anyone who deliberately photobombs someone else's photo, whether it's being taken with a selfie stick or not, is far more rude than someone using a selfie stick. Why would you deliberately try to ruin someone's picture?

And banning selfie sticks is not going to eliminate the problem. You will still have clueless people stopping to grab a shot of themselves with their phones, blocking walkways or walking into others because they are self-absorbed, even without the sticks. The sticks are not the problem.

People have reported getting hit with the sticks and that is rude. There is also no room on rides for these things. They are likely to hit someone or even part of the ride.

They've made a problem that already existed worse. I'm fairly confident they'll ban them at some point soon.

Oh... and 4 is an awesome age at which to introduce volunteering to your kids. They LOVE it at that age. My kids used to canvass door to door with me, and it was great fun.

I do not need you to tell me anything about volunteering. I did not ask for, nor do I need your suggestions for raising my daughter, and not once did I bring up the subject of volunteering. Not that it's any of your business, but our entire family is extremely active in the community. We give our time and our money.

So I will continue to use my selfie stick for as long as Disney allows it. To heck with what other people think.
Which, with any luck, will not be much longer.

The issue won't be with those who see the signs and honor the ban.

The issue will be with those who see the sign, and choose to ignore the ban, and who will spur countless more threads on the DIS from those who resent it.

The Selfie Stick -- it's the new Refillable Resort Mug!!!

I can't believe selfie-sticks are allowed on rides but as a solo traveler I have been to New Zealand, Egypt, Ethiopia, Turkey, all over Disney and other theme parks, all over the UK and the US - and very little to show that I was there. The "selfie" is a rather new concept to begin with, even asking strangers to take your picture is not that recent (by 'recent' I'm talking about it being relative to my travel habit). My arms are disproportionately short, I just have no way to get pictures of myself while traveling.

I am still not going to use a selfie-stick (why worry about pictures of myself at this stage in the game?) but I think, like everything else, they're a great idea when used with respect. Photo bombing when people are using them is kind of...juvenile but to each his/her own.

I really see them no more obtrusive than strollers. (Don't bother asking 'what else am I supposed to do?' I don't know, you had the kids, you figure it out just stop blocking 3/4 of the footpath and running over the back of my heels and we'll be cool.) I've been in situations where I can't get in/out of store because two parental units with strollers decide to have a chat in an aisle or doorway. Never been blocked into somewhere with someone by a selfie stick.

Yet. I can foresee two guests using their individual selfie sticks to take dual selfies of them and the other while standing in a doorway or narrow path...

Maybe they can then duel with the sticks. :)

People have reported being whacked in the ankles with strollers, too. Should we ban those? It's the people using these things that can be rude, not the things themselves.

Also, I carried my stick on every ride I went on for ten days last August. Not sure where the assertion that there is no room on rides for them comes from. I made out just fine. Do you have firsthand experience to indicate otherwise?

I could see this as a contest between myself and my husband!

Big dislike. Intentionally messing with other people is not cool. Much worse than someone accidentally blocking or bumping into you, even if they should have known better.

Strollers are a necessity at a park catering to children. The only thing selfie sticks are necessary for is to feed society's narcissistic egos.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Wow, you've got me pegged. If I carry a selfie stick then I must be a narcissist! Oh, please.
