I am a DVC member and I rented additional points from another DVC member from this site to complete a reservation for a charity. He made the reservation for me, collected the money, and sold his points. Is the reservation still valid?

No, all reservations pending on the closing date are canceled.

Have you contacted him? Is he going to return your money?

That doesn't sound good. I've read others write that when a sale happens, reservations are cancelled. Better call MS or maybe someone here knows for sure......spruce

The news is not good, but the quick reseponse is terrific. Thank you. What is worse is the reservation is not in my name, so member service will not tell me anything!

I do know for sure, all pending reservations are canceled the day of closing.

They did this a few years ago to make resales less attractive.

I hope you have a way to contact this person. There isn't much MS services could tell you. If he/she is no longer a member there isn't any reservation under any name. Reservations wouldn't be valid after 1/15 either if the dues aren't paid on those points. Messy situation all around. Sorry that happened when you were trying to do something nice.

In my time shopping for a resale add on, I noticed a lot of the point situations are based on partial points left in a use year from either past stays or existing reservations.

Does this mean that if a sale is made and there is an existing reservation that it is then cancelled? What status do those points then go into? or restrictions?

sometimes I think to much.........

I think any reservations after the closing date would be cancelled. DVC started this rule because in the process of negotiating, buyers would get the seller to make a future reservation for them so that they would not have to wait until closing. Now the buyer has to wait for the closing and get their member # before they can make a reservation. If you buy from DVC direct, you can make a reservation as soon as your deposit goes through. Makes a resale a little harder.

What status do those points then go into? or restrictions?

The "status" would be the same as if anyone had cancelled them....it would depend on the date of cancellation. Non-DVC would be reservation points; 30 days or less would put them in holding; whether or not they could be banked would depend on the Use Year and whether they were current year points or had already been banked or borrowed.

Were the points tranferred to your account, if so you should be ok, if not you likely have a problem. It sounds like you've been in touch with the other party already, what do they say?

Have you received a copy of the ressie in your name? If so, can you just call MS and verify it?

I rented additional points from another DVC member from this site to complete a reservation for a charity

Since you made part of the reservation using your own points, did you link the reservations together- or were the guests going to have to move? If they were linked, MS should be able to locate the link for you.

I suspect that the member who rented to you possibly was unaware that existing reservations would be cancelled when he rented to you. However, he would likely have been made aware during the sale process.

The policy was started to protect buyers from having points unavailable in their newly purchased contract. The title company must certify the available points in the contract, thus any existing reservations would represent available points and Disney began cancelling the reservation to preserve the certification of the title company.

I hope you are able to contact the previous owner to get this resolved, although it does not help with your charitable contribution.

Good Luck!
