Oh my God!!! It's time to panic!!!!

Cause French toast is so good! I make it all the time, I don't need a snow storm as an excuse to eat French toast. Then sprinkle it with some sugar and cinammon, and a nice cappucino on the side, it's pure bliss.

Oh, now I have a hankering for french toast!!! I think I will have it for supper!!!! Along with some of those sausage balls that someone here on the DIS posted a recipe for!

I'm in the triad area of NC and our schools shut down by 11am yesterday and many businesses shut down after lunch after the sleet started. We hardly get snow/sleet, so when we do I cannot drive well (so I don't) and since the news has reported 300 wrecks in the area many others can't either. Dh and I went to Walmart yesterday before I went to work to get rock salt (did get the last 2 ice melts, no rock salt), dd some gloves (last womens pair), and groceries for the weekend and it was packed at 8am. We got a few inches of snow and it's been years since I've seen any.

But if they didn't break into the shows, how would we ever know it was snowing? It's not like any of us ever go outside or even look outside. TV news is providing a valuable service! And I absolutely need reporters to go to all of the municipal garages and show me that there are snowplows standing by. The state of the salt supply is very important too. Once the snow starts, reporters must be stationed in at least 5 different locations and provide constant updates on the snow. If not, I may not believe that it is actually snowing 20 minutes away.

Exactly! Now all we need are the reporters actually driving 30 feet AHEAD of the storm (showing out the back window all the snow as they drive) screaming the names of the towns their approaching so everyone can panic!
Maybe throw out comments (with the wind whipping in their faces) like "I sure hope that the folks of Omaha have their weeks supply of food because people you can NOT leave your home...I must repeat do NOT leave your home for ANY reason. It's TREACHEROUS out here, do NOT risk your lives the way we trained professionals do".
:rotfl::rotfl:

It must be because I'm from Iowa and these snowstorms happen every single year and yet every year people act like they've lived in Fiji all their lives.

:santa:

Wait, are you people saying that they are breaking into the Tiger Wood updates in order to issue winter storm updates?

Hmmm. Must be pretty serious! ;)

That's how serious it is! How am I suppose to keep up to date on Hollywood when they keep breaking into my E! news update to give me weather reports? SHEESH! :lmao:

It's going to snow!!!
Quick, get to the stores. Empty the shelves of milk and bread we don't know how long it will last. How will we survive?
Hehe... yeah does get a bit silly.

Now I don't know about you but I am really getting tired of all the hype about snow from the weathermen.
Give the weather forecasters a break: If they under-estimate the impact, they're held morally responsible by some for every random catastrophic incident, people dying in car accidents, families freezing, children hungry, etc. If they over-estimate the impact, people smile, roll their eyes, and say, "There they go again." Given that the way we humans are, there are only those two choices, which would you prefer to be subjected to?

Every time I have listened to the weather here in jersey they have upped the total. We are now up to 12 - 18 inches. I went to the store a 6 this morning so that I could have some things in for the next couple of days. I really needed to get there because we were low on snacks and ds just got home from college last night and he is always hungry. I need to get some food into him now since he is going to Africa Jam 3rd and I don't think he is going to eat much when he is away.

My school is a very large district and if it snows as hard as they say it is going to we may not have school on Monday because they probably won't have the roads all plowed. That would be good. I was going to take the day off to take ds for his shots for Africa and if I can go with him without taking a day I will be happy.

Ok when did NE fill with wimps? DH and I were born and raised in NE.We moved from RI 11 yrs ago and I don't remember them namimng storms unless they were hurrcaines! You guys don't get the storms you did back in the 70 so why name them? Milk and bread rushes I remember but not names. Then again most people back then had lived through the Blizzard of 78.

If you want to see a true mess you need to go to WV. We lved there 3yrs and people stayed home for a dusting! We purposly went out when it snowed so we would have stores etc to ourselves! Not only did they not Know how to drive in the snow they couldn't plow very well.tow trucks and plows frequently got stuck (we never had more than 8-10 inches) Every time we got more than a few inches it would take many days to get out. I also could not get one company to salt my 1/2 mile gravel driveway. I was told repeatedly that salt would melt my gravel!!!!!!! When I said that if that was true the entire eastern seaboard would have dissapeared I always got "mam I couldn't take your money knowing it would make your driveway gravel melt"!!!!! Can you believe that? I'm not talking one guy but more than a half dozen. Every contractor in the city of Parkersburg.UGGGG!

We live in the Highlands of SW Pa and they do a decent job here. The first snow eveyone seems to forget how to drive and we get bad accidents then everyone gets their snow legs and things are fine. Beautiful here this am. Hope you enjoy your snow! Here's hoping for a white christmas:)

It is so true! I live in Mass, and I can assure you that the supermarkets will be totally filled with people in their 4 wheel drive suvs, thwoing elbows and cutting in line beacuse it is an emergency.

Im going to stay home and survive on cookies, cocoa, and Christmas movies! I am also going to fit in some studying!

I had not heard that they named the storm, NBC news was actually making fun of the hype last night. The weather guy was like Oh no! It's the storm of the century!!!!! Just kidding..it's could be the biggest one of the season though.

I sent my husband to the store..for Jet Dry. My spotty glasses are driving me nuts.
He was going out anyway, so he braved the crowds at the grocery store for me.:lovestruc;)
I love a good snow day, my husband has to go work stand by at the firehouse and that means extra money.

Well when you live in the boonies of NJ you never know when your roads will be plowed. Along the shore line we don't always get as much snow as elsewhere but when we do it sends a lot of people into a panic.

Yep, I went to the grocery store last night. I needed some bread and bagels and I sprang for a bunch of snacks for the guys in case we don't get out at all until Sunday. Bought a roast to throw in the crockpot because I like to smell it cooking on a snowy day for some reason.

I don't mind the snow but I always hope my electric stays on.

OMG! I totally agree with you. I am soooo glad I don't live in MA anymore. The stocking up for Armageddon drove me crazy. For Pete's sake people, there are snowplows. Spring will come. FWIW, except for the 7 years I lived in MA, I've lived in colder places, MN and ON. In neither place do we panic. What is it about the Northeasterners that cause them to go into such a tizzy?

That's all due to the Blizzard of '78, when people's cars were abandoned on the highway for over a week and the stores actually did run out of bread and milk. A ton of snow fell in a short amount of time.

Yes in Foster RI we lived on rt6 the main rt between Hartford and Providence and we didn't see plows for a week. The house beside us had drifts over their rooftop! What many forget is we had a blizzard at the end of 77 too.

I always have to wonder how long people think we're going to get snowed in for when they're buying ten loaves of bread. Super mobbed stores yesterday, and it's not even that bad out today.

Personally, if I didn't have to work, I would stay very far away from the stores before it snows, as there's nothing I'd need badly enough to want to deal with that crowd.

I don't mind an occasional update on the conditions. At least one of the major channels here does it every half hour all year long. What I HATE is the all day coverage that makes it seems like the world is going to end with the snow. I needed gas last night and gave up on that. The lines were 3 and 4 cars deep on 12 pumps. I went to do some shopping and the stores were packed as bad as Black Friday. I just went out earlier today to fill up, I was on less than a 1/4 tank so I really needed gas.
When my kids were younger we went up through Maine on vacation. I had a flat tire so we saw alot of garages trying to find a replacement, it was a weird size. We had more than one person laugh at how the people down "south" here go into such a panic over a little snow, less than 4 inches is a dusting. My DH and DS are both looking forward to some serious OT as people are already calling out of work on both of their jobs.

I went shopping this morning, not because I needed to stock up on supplies before the storm, but because I needed to finish "regular" Christmas shopping so I can do all my wrapping tomorrow; this will likely be one of the last days I can get out to shop due to my work schedule. I had no choice but to face the crowds I knew would be out. I admit, though, that I did want to get out before the snow so I could be safely home before the roads get bad.

The grocery store was beyond packed. Most people kept a friendly attitude while waiting for their turns to fit down the next aisle, but a few were cranky, making comments like, "it's just snow - why is everyone here?" and I then almost asked, "Well, why are YOU here?" lol. I did find it funny when an announcement came over the store speaker that said, "Attention all staff; our 10:00 snowstorm meeting will be delayed until 10:30." I wonder what they will be discussing :-).

I don't live on the east coast, and I've never understood the panic or the "bread and milk" thing, BUT if you live in an area where snow isn't common, it can get dicey, and getting to the store before the snow shows up is generally a nice idea. Unfortunately, you end up there with people in a panic.

But *are* there adequate snowplows for those areas? I know out here in western WA, there are NOT. And if there are plows, they are generally kept in out of the way storage places that people have to actually get to.

Also out here, it's hilly. So snow really can shut things down, because people here aren't used to driving on flat surfaces in the snow, let alone getting up and down hills.

But I still don't get the bread and milk thing...then again, we only rarely use actually cow's milk, and we get the month's bread and freeze it well in advance...

But after last year's lovely snow, where Seattle was shut down and Tacoma was halfway shut down...but we live just outside of downtown, in walking distance from a store, restaurant, and coffeeshop ALL of which had employees inside of walking distance, and we realized that we had everything we wanted and most things we needed (except for the library!), I'm still HOPING we'll get some snow this winter! :)

Here in NC, if there is even a mention of the word snow, the freaking out populace runs to Walmart or the grocery stores and emptys every loaf of bead and gallon of milk from the shelves, which BEGS the question...

We got about 5-6 inches in mid-state NC last night. It's beautiful, but luckily it will be mostly melted and gone by tomorrow/Monday. It IS hilarious watching the folks who grew up around here freak out over the snow.

Then we went across the street to mcDonald's for dinner, but they had CLOSED!! Seriously...McDonalds closed...due to bad weather??? Hilarious! So we went next door to Bojangles, which was open. On our way home we were nearly killed by several drivers who were driving too slow.

We got stuck behind a cardriving 5 mph...literally. And they had their hazard lights on.

I went to chiro school in SC. The schools were closed once for a week AFTER the snow was gone. Which sounded so silly, until it was explained that most of the kids lived in rural areas with heavy tree cover. So there was water on the road which iced up, and the schoolbuses couldn't get in there to pick up the kids. By the time the ice melted, school would have been over anyway, and then it would have started icing up soon after the buses would have been dropping off the kids anyway. It was snow-related, but not actual snow. And it was for safety.

Honestly, if someone is afraid to be driving in conditions but *has to* drive anyway, I'd prefer that they drive how they feel it's safe. I wouldn't want someone to go the speed limit when they are terrified. That's just a horrific accident waiting to happen.

I once flew back into WA in the middle of a rotten snowstorm. Had to practically bribe a taxi driver to let me in the cab...all the cabbies were heading home empty, not willing to risk a fare. He wouldn't take me up the hill to my boyfriend's, he dropped me off at the ATM so I could get money to pay him, then I had to walk the mile or so. I was "saved" by a couple women originally from Colorado, yay for them! But I wouldn't have *wanted* to be in the cab with the WA driver, if he was uncomfortable getting up the slope...

So give them a break; they aren't used to driving in it, and you don't want to push themselves beyond their comfort zone, b/c that's going to make it worse.

in 1994, the same thing happened in Kentucky. The whole state was pretty much shut down after a 20-inch snowfall. The roads were closed for several days, and if you could get to the store there wasn't any of the staples (bread, milk, eggs) to be had. And it stayed that way for some days after they did finally get the roads open. It was bad.

I went food shopping this morning, btw I always go on Saturday mornings, and the store was a zoo!! Sooooo irritating.

I get the whole "blizzard of 78" mentality as people really were stuck in the house for a week and the roads were all closed, but come geesh, it was a mad house.

Not in a tizzy here. Not everyone gets into a tizzy.

Where do you live? I'm in Irwin, just off the turnpike, between Monroeville and Greensburg.
