Oh My! – The Brits Are At It Again! **COMPLETED** 11/13/11

Mmm yummy dole whip! :thumbsup2 Oh no on having to get two spoons.

Also great EoS review - of course I wouldn't expect anything less from this place

It was a hard sacrifice to make but two spoons were needed in the interest of marital harmony :rotfl:

Pineapple vanilla swirl! The best food at Disney, tropical, sweet, creamy. I love that stuff so much that it makes up half of my username (with the other half being my favorite character). :lovestruc

Can't believe you actually shared it. I can understand sharing Disney cupcakes because they're enormous. But each and every drop of tart pineapple goodness mixed with creamy vanilla is like ice cream gold to me. I bow to your willpower and altruism. :lmao:

Mmm, I think you like Dole Whip

Are you sailing on the 5/19/12 Fantasy :confused3? If so, so are we :woohoo:. There's actually a rather large group of us DISers who met (via the DIS Cruise Meets board) before our Magic cruise in May 2009. We all got along so well :grouphug: that we decided to cruise together on The Fantasy :dance3:.

Too bad I'm on the 12th of May sailing, you will probably see me at the port on the 19th crying because I have had to get off the ship :sad1:

Monday October 10th Part Four

Hey everyone, hope you are all having a lovely week so far :goodvibes

So when we last left off we were heading back to the Boardwalk Villas from Downtown Disney

The weather was gorgeous so we spent a very enjoyable couple of hours down at the pool

A couple of Grand Margaritas may have been enjoyed pool side :rolleyes1

No photos I’m afraid; I never take a camera within a five mile radius of my bikini :lmao:

Tonight our dinner was probably the ADR I had most been looking forward to ahead of our trip

Flying Fish Cafe

As a non-meat eater but a big fish eater the menu here really appealed to me; I had also seen some great reviews so I was excited about trying Flying Fish for the first time

It took all of five minutes to walk from our room to the check in podium where we were given a buzzer before heading off to check out some of the great live entertainment on the Boardwalk

We ended up waiting for around 30 minutes past our ADR time of 7.30pm but there was plenty to keep us entertained

When our buzzer finally started to vibrate we headed inside the restaurant and were led to our table by a lovely lady who happened to be a fellow Brit

We chatted away for a couple of minutes and she explained that our server would be with us shortly

The restaurant décor was simple and relaxing and although by no means every table was occupied everyone seemed to be running behind a little and the servers seemed to be running around looking flustered

We sat for around 15 minutes before our server arrived; he seemed like a really nice guy but again; he seemed a little distracted and rushed and to be honest we hardly saw him throughout our meal and the server from the next table would usually be the one to spot empty water glasses etc and top us up

We were soon delivered our bread which I don’t remember as being particularly memorable and neither of us ate very much of it

IMG_5166.jpg

Sourdough Bread

But who needs bread when you have one of these babies to occupy yourself with before the entrees arrive :woohoo:

IMG_5167.jpg

Cotton Candy Martini

This was delicious, it was of course a fairly sweet drink but not so sweet as to make your teeth tingle if you know what I mean :teeth:

This was delivered to the table still in the cocktail shaker for one last flourish before being poured; I’m a sucker for a bit of table side shaking

When we were ordering our entrees I had asked our server if the Scallops could be served without the Jammon Serrano Cracklin’s and if so could he double check that the rest of the dish would be OK for a non-meat eater (just in case the risotto was made with chicken stock)

I explained that I would happily opt for the Tuna entrée if it was a problem but he never returned to our table to let me know either way so I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting until it arrived

We had a really nice window table so could continue to watch the entertainment outside but it was a very long time before our main courses arrived and as I said before our server seemed to have gone AWOL :confused3

I finally got my surprise dish

IMG_5172.jpg

Oak-Grilled Maine Diver Scallops; Butternut Squash, Sage, Pecorino Romano and Mascarpone Laced Risotto

So let’s start with the good; the risotto was absolutely delicious :cloud9:

The flavours were wonderful and the texture and consistency was perfect; creamy with a slight bite to the rice still

Unfortunately the Scallops had not been prepared correctly and although perfectly cooked with a wonderful taste; they were slightly ‘gritty’ so I don’t think they had been washed correctly

It was a shame as it was quite obvious that correctly prepared this would be an incredible dish :sad2:

I wanted to order a glass of wine to accompany my dinner and ended up asking the server from the next section if he could help when he was topping up our water

IMG_5174.jpg

Domaine Zind Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Alsace ‘02

I’m glad I managed to get this; which was the suggested wine pairing, as it was a truly wonderful glass and worked perfectly with my dish

DH’s entrée was much more successful

IMG_5173.jpg

Our Signature Flying Fish Café “Char-Crusted Certified Black Angus New York Strip Steak”
Pan-Roasted Fingerling Potatoes, Pole Beans, Young Carrots and Bermuda Onions, with an Applewood-Smoked Bacon & Mustard Vinaigrette and Classic Sauce Foyot

Phew, that took some typing

DH loved this dish; he tells me that the steak was perfectly cooked; the sauce and vinaigrette were great flavour enhancers and that the vegetables still had a nice bite

A big hit all round and he cleared the plate :thumbsup2

Our server put in an appearance to ask us if we wanted dessert but I already knew what I wanted

IMG_5176.jpg

Trio Of Concession Sweets „Out On The Boardwalk“
Popcorn Mousse & Caramel Corn; Cherry-Limeade Popsicle; Crunchy Peanut Butter-Chocolate Whoopie Pie & Pound Cake Fries

I was really looking forward to this and it was a total let down; the whoopie pie was so hard you couldn’t even cut into it, the caramel corn was so soft I would still be chewing it now if I hadn’t given up, the popsicle was stuck solid to the side of the glass and to be honest I just gave up after one of two mouthfuls

Right matey, my dessert is rubbish so that means you are sharing yours!

IMG_5177.jpg

Golden Apple, Pecan and “Blondie” Tart;Toffee Ice Cream, Apple Cider Syrup, and an Apple Tuile

Sounds great doesn’t it? Well I am sorry to say that it was ice cold and needed some kind of mechanical device to cut into it; again we gave up after a bite each :sad2:

So all in all the Flying Fish Café was a bit of a disappointment which is a real shame as you could just tell that if these dishes had been correctly prepared they would be stunning

I guess they were just having an off night and hey, you win some you loose some

At least we didn’t have far to travel home

Coming up next – will the Tonga Toast defeat me!

Sorry your meal at Flying Fish wasn't everything you had hopped for! Such a contrast to July for me.

Oh no on having a not so good experience at Flying Fish. I have to agree in that the menu does look great.

Your scallops dish looks yummy - a shame they weren't cooked properly :sad2:

Great reviews so far! I especially liked the one of Cinderalles Castle breakfast. Disney always knows how to make things magical even for adults :wizard:

Still enjoying your reviews. Sorry Flying Fish was a let down, the dishes all sound good so it's a shame their preparation was off. That trio of desserts can be really nice when it's prepared correctly, the whoopie pie I had was soft and moist, and the mousse was lovely.

Sorry to hear about Flying Fish, Linda. We had quite a nice experience there last year.
There is no excuse for not properly cleaned scallops and for inedible desserts!

Now, DID the Tonga Toast defeat you?

I am so disappointed for you! FF is one of my favorite restaurants and I've never had bad service or food there. I hope you'll give them another chance someday because I know they're better than that!!

What a shame they were having an off day - as you said it could easily have been a great meal. Perhaps you'll have to give it another chance one day?

What a shame about Flying Fish. You scallops looked delicious and the dessert sounded amazing.mwhatba let down. At least DH main was a winner. Oh and that martini looks right my alley. :thumbsup2

Unfortunately we have also been disappointed in FF recently. Our meal there last May was subpar and the Chilean wine dinner we attended during F&W wasn't much better. Sad, it was our favorite place!

We had a really disappointing meal at FF in 2009 with similar service to yours. But this past trip it was one of our favorite meals. I had the same dessert and thought it was pretty tasty. We are looking forward to returning next year ... I hope it is not an off night!

:scared1: Oh no Linda, what do i do now?

Just shown DH your FF review, now he's saying book Cali Grill," At least if the foods rubbish we get to watch Wishes". Suppose he's got a point.

So, which one shall we choose? Theirs only one way to find out, FIGHT!!!

Oh Linda, you made me happy that I missed out on FF! I would have ordered the scallops and DH would have had the steak (that is always excellent!) but to hear about gritty scallops is so sad. Your BW trio dessert, well Todd would have had that and been so disappointed the popcicle wasnt served in a little Coke Cola glass! And I would have had the apple thing....and been disappointed

Sorry your meal wasnt "signature" like....but try it again some time, we have been many times and never had a bad meal or experience.

I'm sure they were just having an off night; I love their menu and there are so many other things I would like to try :thumbsup2

We still had a great evening so it wasn't a total flop :goodvibes

Great reviews so far! I especially liked the one of Cinderalles Castle breakfast. Disney always knows how to make things magical even for adults :wizard:

Ahh the Castle Breakfast - just wonderful :cloud9:

Still enjoying your reviews. Sorry Flying Fish was a let down, the dishes all sound good so it's a shame their preparation was off. That trio of desserts can be really nice when it's prepared correctly, the whoopie pie I had was soft and moist, and the mousse was lovely.

I was so excited about the trio dessert as I knew it would be right up my street but it just wasn't well prepared :sad2:

Sorry to hear about Flying Fish, Linda. We had quite a nice experience there last year.

Tonga Toast coming up next :thumbsup2

I am sure we will give them another try sometime; especially if we are staying nearby again :goodvibes

What a shame they were having an off day - as you said it could easily have been a great meal. Perhaps you'll have to give it another chance one day?

I just think that they were having problems that night, perhaps they were under-staffed :confused3
The servers really seemed stressed and we hardly saw ours all night

What a shame about Flying Fish. You scallops looked delicious and the dessert sounded amazing.mwhatba let down. At least DH main was a winner. Oh and that martini looks right my alley. :thumbsup2

If DH's steak is good and my cocktail is good then it's always going to be a good night

Unfortunately we have also been disappointed in FF recently. Our meal there last May was subpar and the Chilean wine dinner we attended during F&W wasn't much better. Sad, it was our favorite place!

It was our first time there so I don't have previous visits to compare it with but on the whole the reviews seem pretty good. I haven't seen any reviews of this years F&W Dinner Event yet but I hope they did a good job :thumbsup2

It was a shame that the service was a bit lacking as well as the food as the two things combined really let them down :sad2:

:scared1: Oh no Linda, what do i do now?

Just shown DH your FF review, now he's saying book Cali Grill," At least if the foods rubbish we get to watch Wishes". Suppose he's got a point.

Love the Harry Hill reference :lmao:
Any restaurant can have an off night, if I was you I would take a look at both menus to see which you like the sound of more
Have you ever been to either? if not that seeing Wishes from CG is a wonderful end to a meal :goodvibes

I know, it was really disappointing that the popsicle wasn't in the Coke glass, I love that presentation, so cute :lovestruc
The only signature we haven't tried now is Citricos, do you think we should try it?

Tuesday October 11th Part One

We had a nice leisurely start to the day today and made our way over to the Polynesian for a 9.45am ADR at Kona Café

We arrived in plenty of time so had chance for a bit of an explore

I so want to stay at this resort someday, it’s just beautiful :cloud9:

IMG_5183.jpg

If only every day could start like this

Anyway onto the good stuff; the reason for this ADR was to try a couple of legendary WDW breakfast delights

Before we checked in I was still going back and forth in my mind as to what I should order; imagine my delight when DH selected one of my two choices

IMG_5184.jpg

Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes - with macadamia nut butter, pineapple sauce and your choice of ham, bacon or sausage

As you can see, DH selected the sausage which he really enjoyed, in general the sausage at WDW is always a big hit with DH and more than makes up for the poor bacon

Now I have to admit we were both a little underwhelmed with these, it’s not that they were bad but we both prefer a lighter and fluffier pancake than these.

Each pancake was actually quite thick and dense and it just felt like hard work to chew your way through each one; perhaps we just didn’t get a great batch as I have seen so many great reviews of these in the past :confused3

So with DH choosing the Pancakes I was now free to order my other option

IMG_5185.jpg

Tonga Toast - banana stuffed sourdough bread, rolled in cinnamon sugar and served with Strawberry Compote and your choice of ham, bacon, or sausage

I asked if I could get eggs as my side which my server confirmed wasn’t a problem :thumbsup2

I hate to say it but yet again we were a little disappointed with this :guilty:

The Tonga Toast seemed really hard and when I cut through into the middle there was the tiniest piece of banana (probably the size of my thumbnail) to be honest I think it had been either overcooked or left to sit under a heat lamp for too long :sad2:

Flavour wise I thought it was great so I’m really not sure if just we got a bad example or if this is the usual texture

It was actually really hard work to cut through it and it definitely needed more banana filling

The eggs were wonderful however, really light and creamy and we both really enjoyed them

Our server didn’t bring the usual accompaniments out with our food so I had to flag her down as I really wanted to try the Strawberry Sauce (she didn’t seem very happy that I asked )

IMG_5186.jpg

Strawberry Sauce, Butter and Syrup

The Strawberry Sauce was delicious but I much preferred using the butter and syrup with the Toast; wow I must have consumed like a million calories :scared1:

As DH doesn’t drink coffee I ordered a cup of the Kona Blend rather that the Kona Press Pot as I thought it would be too much coffee for one person, in hindsight I am sure I would have managed to get through it so if we visit again I will certainly order it

In a (macadamia) nutshell; Kona was OK but not amazing and I don’t really feel the need to rush back, well at least not for breakfast but we love dinner here

Coming Up Next – Magic Kingdom & Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party

All caught up again.

We finally got to EOS this year and Mark had the original and LOVED it.

We've not been to Flying Fish either. We keep talking about it and Nicki has said we should try it, but we just never get around to it. I would have been disappointed as I know I would have ordered the scallops -- love scallops -- but for them not to be cooked right would have thrown off my whole night.

I catch up and comment and you go and sneak in another review on me. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

I'm sorry that you were not very happy with Kona. We went for the first time and loved our meal (I've not gotten to that part of my reviews yet), but then we all ordered things that you didn't, except Mark -- he did have the tonga toast.

Now I really want pineapple macadamia nut pancakes! My fav :goodvibes
