Since it's Sunday night, Superbowl Sunday actually, and I'm home alone with the kids (DH is out of town), I am not heading to the ER for this but...

A few hours ago, my throat started to hurt A LOT, but only on one side. And my tounge is very sore at the back too, left side too. Taking a look, I see white splotches and blisters. I'm tossing back Airborne as we speak. No fever. Am I doomed to Strep? Could the white blotches be viral? :cheer2: Or most likely Strep? :badpc:

Oh Dis Doctors, what do you think? And yes, if it keeps up I will definitely hit up my GP tomorrow morning, lol... just not going to the ER with a Sore Throat with 3 kids on Superbowl Sunday night! :lmao:

Edited to add: Now I have a low grade fever. :rolleyes1

I'm not a doctor - nor do I play one on tv - but - it could be a number of things.. My best advice is don't kiss the kiddies and if it does get worse and you feel the need to go to the ER, it will probably be virtually empty because everyone is watching the Super Bowl! :)

In my past life, I was almost a doctor, but I failed the boards.

C. Ann's advice is good. A++ for her at Tubaman University.

It may just be a virus but if you're worried, go to the doctors tomorrow for a strep test. Strep throat really isn't an emergency so it can wait until the morning. Take some Tylenol or Motrin for the fever/discomfort.

i'm no doctor. white splotches could be something like thrush (ie. a yeast infection). i had it once when i was little and it sure hurt like a sore throat.

You know, that's true! My DD once had it as an adult - a side effect from some sort of medication she was taking..

OP - are you on any meds - or have you been lately?

No, no medications at all. The blisters are getting very bad now, at the back of my tongue, fever around 99.8 or so, not too bad. Hurts to talk, drink, etc, swallow, etc...

I can't think of anything this can be...

Not a doc in real life, but play one on the dis. :teeth:

Get to the doctor. You don't know what it is, you could pass it to your kids, etc, etc.

Besides, the er should be pretty empty since most people are watching the superbowl. I wouldn't expect it to get crowded until later.

Some warm water gargles with salt added every few hours...painkillers and if it gets really bad go to emerg. I am a long-time Strep/Tonsillitus/Quincy sufferer and it has taken me to the hosp more times than I care to remember!!

Feel better soon!!

"Blisters"? I don't like the sounds of that.. Maybe you really should go to the ER.. What if your tongue or throat swells to the point where you can't breathe and you're home alone with the kids?

At the very least, call your doctors exchange..

And keep us posted!

I agree! Icky picture, but thanks for caring! No, it doesn't look like that at all. Blotchy, red with some white (not stand out white) and blisters on the back of the tongue. I took some Aleve so it should help soon.

I can't up and go to the ER for this since there is no one here to watch the kids. It's honestly not that bad right now either to warrant a trip to the ER. If it gets much worse on the Aleve, then I will consider it. However, right now, me and my Chocolate Silk are taking it easy on the couch watching the Superbowl.

Totally weird though and it came on very, very sudden.

And I don't get sick. Nope. Last time I was "sick" was 6 years ago.

does your throat look like this?

oral thrush

Interesting photo.. That's the "back" of the throat where all of those white patches are - correct? Good info to have - icky or not! ;)

It could be strept throat from what you are saying. If you have strept, you have 10 days to start antibiotic in order to prevent long-term complications. The pain of strept throat is self-limited, so starting antibiotics immediately won't necessarily lessen the time of the sore throat.

When we were in medical school, we would taunt each other with something like "what has XXX got in common with a constipated termite?". The answer "Neither can pass their boards".

Well, ummm... I don't WANT Strep, so any other ideas? :lmao:

It definitely is something. Since the pain is really not doing anything with the Aleve, I'll more than likely heading into my GP tomorrow morning.

Come on Airborne!!! Start working... make this thing go away overnight! Save me $20!

OMG, why did I click on that??? :crazy2: :rotfl:

there are much worse pictures on the internet, but i figured i'd spare everyone the grossness of them all. i found the only kind of acceptable one. haha. :p

I'm no doctor either, but I'm a mom. I had strep in March of 2005. I didn't think I could get strep as I've had my tonsils out. It was honestly the worst sore throat I had. Felt like I was swallowing a razor blade. No pain medicine helped nor anesthetic sprays. The good news is that once you get the antibiotics, the pain leaves quickly.

My throat kind of felt like it was closing up and I was gagging like I was going to vomit when I had strep. The symptoms of strep are headache centering above the eyes, nausea sometimes, fever 102, general aches. Sometimes there is a way the doctor looks at the creases in your arm and can tell but the best way is a culture and not a quickie culture either.
