I read the sticky above but can someone explain how it works to get an OGT room upgraded if they are available? Is this something that I have to be proactive about, ask someone about? Or, do they just do it automatically? Thanks!!

When you book and OGT (or any other last minute restricted fare) you are guaranteed that you will get an Oceanview room or better. There's no way of knowing what room you will get until it is assigned to you.

If you don't like the room assigned, you can go (after you check in at the port) to the supervisors desk to see if there any available upgrades (you pay for this). But you can't just change to a different room in the same category you have just because you don't like it.

I think it's possible for them to assign you an upgraded room, but if they don't, you will need to ask at the port.

Has anyone been upgraded to a different category on a *GT rate (like from oceanview to verandah or inside to oceanview)? I did not think it was possible. I know they promise you at least any cabin in the category you booked (inside, o/v or verandah) but I didn't think they upgraded *GT rates. I know, as mentioned, you can upgrade at the port if available.

I know they will upgrade GTY bookings but did not think they comp upgraded with *GT rates.

MJ,

On the thread with *GT assignments, I have seen IGTs get Cat 4 Verandahs assigned!!! Check out that thread.

Seems more on new ships tho.

We booked an OGT our first time booking *GT (on the Fantasy, Aug '12) and ended up getting a 4D. We were really happy. :cool1:

Hoping the same comes true for our sailing on the Magic in October, but am thinking we'll get 9D w/ two small portholes or 9C in the back above the engines (I hate the "sway" in the back along with the vibration). But for the price we paid, I will take anything. :thumbsup2

I think that's what I'm nervous about - in the back above the engines! We will really have to make use of our Bonine. My girls were "green" almost every night at dinner when were in the restaurants at the front or back of the boat. Oh well, we hardly spent much time in our room. Crossing my fingers for something that won't make us miserable as we sleep. :))

I was going to ask this very same question! I mean, if you are going to roll the dice, and basically say ill take what you give me, AND BE HAPPY (that is the key), does it make sense to book least expensive rate and see if your category is upgraded?

The verbiage on the DCL site leads you to think that the rate you book you will stay in, perhaps in different areas but if you reserve IGT you will wind up with an inside room, etc.

If you have the option to upgrade at the port, pending availability, it makes me wonder why they ever upgrade your GT room to a better category, or they probably would have done it on their own before you arrive at n/c

Just thinkin out loud... I wonder what percentage of time you reserve a lower GT rate and wind up with a better GT room.

If I want to pay to upgrade a category (pending availability), what is the best way to go about doing so? I read on one thread that some people get to the port at 9:30 a.m. Is that a good option? My friend was able to get a free upgrade on a navigator room just by calling DCL this last spring! How does that happen?

Only book a category IF YOU WILL BE HAPPY WITH THAT CATEGORY. Don't book it if not getting an upgrade will ruin your trip. Book the category you really want if that is the case.

If you booked a *GT rate you will only be able to upgrade at the port if you were not previously assigned to an upgraded category. It would be extremely rare to be offered a free upgrade for any booking just for calling DCL. Upgrades at the port are first come, first served, but it might not make sense to get there before the port opens.

The port will likely not be open that early. Port upgrades are done at the supervisors desk after you checkin, first come first serve. I doubt the upgrade you friend got was truly "free". The price could have dropped and she could have been able to move up a category for no extra $

This is likely what happened. The rule is if you ask for an upgrade, you will pay for it.

We sailed in an IGT for the first time last week to Alaska. We've always sailed VGT or a FL res rate, and we've always received a cat 4 (lucky us!). For this last cruise we sailed in a cat 10, so a slight "upgrade" of sorts. But I do know that people have reported being "upgraded" if the room type they booked is in high demand after the *GT comes out. It sounds like this happens with OGT most often, as there are relatively few of them. The reasoning is, apparently, that if DCL decides they can sell more of a certain price point at full price, they will. And in the process, they'll upgrade people out of that cat to sell it. If that makes sense.

We thought we'd try for an upgrade to an oceanview or verandah on the Alaska cruise, but it ended up being $500 more for a porthole and $1000 more for a verandah. Now, in the scheme of things, that's not THAT much for a week in Alaska, but it really would have defeated the truly awesome deal we got through the IGT ($2500 for 2a, 2c). And it was only $800 more to have booked the OGT originally with a chance of a better room. In the end, we stuck with our deck 2 inside room. And loved it so much we booked another cruise inside!
