Offsite bakery for birthday cake?

We had two negative experiences with Disneyland cakes in the past (like, asking for a Mickey Mouse theme on a cake for two boys and receiving something decorated all over with butterflies and ribbon, like, real cloth ribbon) and have no interest giving them another chance.

Are there any bakeries relatively close to DL that we could order a personalized cake from...looking for something in between a supermarket cake and a super fancy fondant?

We will have a car. We plan to go to the Trader Joes in Orange the first day so anything out in that direction would be good.

Or, is the bakery at Knott's a good idea? Reviews are saying they have gone downhill in the past year.

Are you going to the Trader Joe's on Tustin Avenue in Orange. If so, there's a French's Bakery very close to there. In fact I think it's across the street. French's is my favorite bakery here in Irvine, and I recently discovered this location. It's right next to a Staples store that I use for business. French's is an old-type style place. They have excellent pastries and cakes.

That sounds exactly what I was hoping for, thank you! According to google maps, the TJs on Tustin in Orange is the closest location to our hotel so that was indeed where we will be headed.

There's also the cheesecake factory if you into that style of cake, or there is a cold stone creamery just across the street from the main gate. Not sure if they make ice cream cakes.

Thanks for the suggestions! We like both those places but I am hoping for something more local, not found in our area...I know the cake may not be that different but I would like to give a local bakery our business, if that makes sense.

My DH went looking and fell in love with photos and reviews of a place called Cream Pan, a Japanese-French bakery, (he loves strawberry anything) but it is way down in Tustin (but there is a TJ's nearby it too). Anyone happen to know it and consider it worth driving 9 miles for?!

We LOVE Susie's Cakes in Corona Del Mar (or Newport Beach not sure what city it's actually considered).
https://www.susiecakes.com/ :worship:
Local bakery, all natural ingredients, always made from scratch and she donates cupcakes to my Aunt's charity fundraiser in Lake Forest every year. Not cheap, but you definately get what you pay for.
My Dad isn't big on sweets and insists on the Tropical Coconut Cake with Coconut buttercream frosting when we are down there for any sort of celebration - even if it's not his. :lovestruc

If you do order from Susie's make sure to stop by C'est Si Bon Bakery in Newport Beach. It is owned and run by a French couple and their croissants are so good that on our off day, I get up early and take a car from GCH to C'est Si Bon and grab croissants, scones, and boule and coffees for everyone to bring back to have at the pool.

Hope that helps!

Cream Pan is a Japanese French bakery, justifiably well known for the quality of and artistry of its pastries. But I wouldn't go there for a kid's birthday cake. Unless your boys' palates are geared toward Japanese French, then Cream Pan may not be the best bet for them. But Susie Cakes is great! Very good quality and excellent reputation. There is one located in the SOCO center at Harbor and the 405 freeway.

This is our son's cake from early December. The baker works out of her home in Orange. A little pricey but oh so worth it! (Our cake would have fed 90 people and the cost was $240) She has a Facebook page: Black Dress Bakery.

Thanks for the other ideas! And for sharing a pic of your son's beautiful cake! Will research them. I do think my boys would enjoy the Cream Pan strawberry cream cake very much, from the photos I have seen of it, but, if there is an option closer, that would be great too!

You might consider Paris Baguette or Champagne Bakery.

Paris Baguette is a french/korean bakery. I've bought several birthday cakes from here including their strawberry cream. My personal favorite is the blue berry yogurt cake. So far I've never been disappointed by the flavors or presentation. Plus they give you complementary cake server, candles, and matches.

Champagne Bakery is french. I normally buy their pastries or tarts. I haven't tried many of their cakes but it's still a quality place.

Thanks for your interest in supporting local businesses. I recommended French's Bakery in an earlier post. But I'd also like to recommend an ice cream shop. It's called N2 Creamery, and is located in Villa Park. It's about 5 minutes from French's. They specialize in made-to-order ice cream, using liquid nitrogen to instantly freeze the ice cream. This is a new thing here in SoCal, and it's quite a show that your kids would love. And they are a new, local business. Just thought I'd add that to my prior recommendation.

look up Katella Deli (and Bakery). its on Katella several miles to the west. They had lots of examples of custom made cakes they've made in the past.

Woohoo, so many great options, so happy to have all this info! Thank you!

Fantaluminishes, coincidentally, I had added N2 to my bookmarks the other day after Yelp suggested it. Glad to hear it is good, my kids will be fascinated as there is nothing like that around here.
