Official Wine & Dine 2014

I just worry because I have had a really bad experience with a huge race here in Chicago 2 years in a row about being put in the back corral 2 years in a row with multiple emails and phone call saying I would be changed then having them not change it. Their response this year when they did it was oh wells. They won't be getting my money again.

Ugh! First day of Galloway training and it has been thundering and lightening all day :(

Any tips on gaining speed? I had a baby in April and have been struggling since I started running again in May. I used to average 10 minute miles, but now I've been struggling to keep 13/14 minute miles. I know I can finish in the allotted time, but I really want to gain some speed back so I can stop for pictures and not feel like I'll fall behind. I feel like a new runner again, but I don't remember what I did when I first started running to get faster, I feel like it just happened.

Lately I've been doing the following, and it seems to be helping a lot. I'm training for an early September half marathon and then starting to train for January in WDW...doing W&D as well. :)

- 4 days per week of running - 3 at easy pace and one that is either speedwork intervals or a tempo run
- 2 days per week of strength training

With the speedwork I have been doing 0.25-mile intervals at 5K pace (started with 5, going to work up to 10 eventually)...with the tempo runs I start out slowly, and then gradually built up until I'm at peak speed (10K pace) about two-thirds into the run. Then do a cooldown.

So for me, I think it's been a combination of gaining endurance (the 3 easy runs per week, especially my long runs), 1 day of faster running (speedwork or tempo run...alternate one or the other each week) and strength training.

I'm sure you'll get back to 10:00/mile pace!! :)

I'm just curious did they fix the problem with the bag check that they had the first year?

Pretty much. The race no longer ends in Millennium Showplace Pavilion so it isn't cramped and hot and stifling with no air or space to move.

I forgot about that! I did the relay the first year, so my SIL got my bag at the exchange, but I remember walking through the chaos that first year. I'm glad you can now check a bag without missing half the party!

I've had some nice results getting faster for the past year or so using this FIRST to the Finish Program for marathons. There are programs out there from the Furman Institute for a Half Marathon Program, although I didn't read as to whether it's geared more for first-timers or those wanting to get faster. The marathon program I linked to first is for people trying to get faster - which you could tweak the long runs to stop earlier.

I cross-train along with this working out at home, but the three days per week has been nice for me to improve my running without getting burned out on it. It might provide a good structure for somebody with a new baby looking to improve speed, too! However you go about it, best of luck in picking up your pace so you can relax and enjoy yourself more along the course!! :thumbsup2

I avg around 11 minute miles. I just started running less than a year ago and wasn't planning to do a 10k until Aug 2nd. Unfortunately the Wine and Dine cut off is Aug 1st. Are they strict about this cut off? If so I was going to do a 10K this weekend. Would the improvement in corral placement be worth it??

Thanks!

Yes, they are strict with the cut-off. As to whether a 10K this weekend would help you, what did you submit when you signed up? :)

Currenty I have no proof of time

Gotcha. If it were me, I would run the 10K this weekend and submit it. Since you currently don't have a proof of time submitted, they'll likely place you in one of the last corrals, which means that you will start the race at a later time and will be behind a lot of people. If you are currently running 11-minute miles you may be frustrated running in one of the latter corrals - finding yourself doing a lot of weaving, etc.

Check out this link and see what they have as your anticipated finish time and see what you think. You can plug your 11MM pace into some online calculators and see what your predicted finish time for a half would be and go for there.

You're on it ... Any time prior to Aug 1 is good!

I'm thinking there will still be a way to change things, but it prob won't be easy or convenient as years past. (And you'll have to prove you submitted it prior to Aug 1)

Hey guys so I just checked the link to make sure they updated it because I submitted it for three races at once (Dumbo, Wine and Dine, and Avengers). And while they apparently updated it. It's saying something weird now. It's saying that's it's an unverified proof of time.

Huh?

I mean I submitted it to them. So what the heck do they mean? Do they still need to check with the race officials or something?

Is anyone else getting this? Is this something I am specifically getting because I ran an odd distance race (it was a Quarter Marathon so it was 6.55 miles)?

I just want to make sure anyone else is getting this. I mean I am all ready going to be in a much slower corral than my pace average as it is (this corral is for a 2:59 finish so were talking a 13:45 pace almost, I am comfortably training at 12:00-12:30 minute pace right now. At my really slowest you would catch me maybe at a 13:30 right now and that's on a really slow day. The only reason why I am trying not to move up a corral is because there is no damn races around here (the one race I could have run cancelled)).

If I remember the page correctly, it says all times will be verified after the deadline for submissions. Until then all times are unverified, and if they can't verify your time with info provided you could be placed in the last corrals. If you provided the necessary info and it can be validated you should be fine.

I saw the unverified comment too. Where did you are that your time had been updated? I liked how they did confirmation emails in the past.
