Official Wine & Dine 2014

I hope this doesn't sound "bratty," but I'm pretty bummed. This was going to be our first Disney race. I was so excited! I'm a little annoyed that there are so many people who've done a million races and who are racking up medals...I know its silly, but I'm just sorta bummed. Congrats to all who were able to register!

Did you sign up for the e-mail alerts for when registration would begin? If not, you may want to consider doing that for any future races you would consider running. Following runDisney on twitter is helpful, too, since they tweet about upcoming registration and provide sporadic updates on capacity after it opens - particularly as it gets close to selling out.

Hope you have more success the next time! :thumbsup2

I think people are overlooking two important reasons for a quick sellout:

1) the pace minimum is 16 minutes per mile. . .

2) Election Day is the Monday before the race. . .

Really, these two factors may be a HUGE contributing factor in non-runners and regular vacationers signing up.

Neither of these are different from last year, though, so it wouldn't seem they'd have any more effect. The 16:00/mile pacing is standard across all the runDisney events and has been for some time now. Wine & Dine was the same time last year, too, with respect to election day and took longer to sell-out.

I posted this in the other thread about the races selling out quick, but I thought I'd copy here too. I thought about why I signed up for the race, and I think these factors are very important.

I think people are overlooking two important reasons for a quick sellout:

1) the pace minimum is 16 minutes per mile. The average person in decent health can walk that fast or faster. Would I ever do a non-Disney half marathon and run the whole thing? No way! But, an opportunity to run and walk at a slower pace? Sure, sounds fun!

2) Election Day is the Monday before the race. We picked that week as a vacation week because my kids will only miss four days of school instead of five. Then, I saw I could do the race while I was already there, so why not?

Really, these two factors may be a HUGE contributing factor in non-runners and regular vacationers signing up.

Another contributing factor COULD be that the week before is also Jersey week. All NJ schools are off the the Thursday & Friday before the race for NJEA conferences.

I responded to this on the other thread, but I will just quickly say that I personally believe those would have only a minimal effect on the super fast sell out this year as opposed to the previous years.

I signed up on runDisney for the notification email, and got nothing. And Disney emails are set to get through our filters. We were thinking about doing this as our first 1/2, but thought we'd have a little longer than 24 hours to make a decision. If only DCL had released their 2015 dates, we would have moved that vacation to free up time for this. Oh, well. Any chance they'll increase the race size, given the fast sell out? Don't they have a larger cap for the 1/2 that's a part of marathon weekend?

The emails are hit and miss in regards to who gets them and who doesn't. That is why they also had it posted on the site as to when the race would be and when registration would open up. I kept those dates handy and seared in my mind in case my email didn't come through.

I can pretty much guarantee they will not open more spots for this. Once a race is sold out, it is sold out. Doesn't matter if it is sold out in a day or in several months. The number of spots to sell will remain the same. You can, however, try signing up through a charity organization. There are five participating charities listed that will have some spots designated to them.

Yes! I knew exactly when it was opening, but I'm a teacher and then had meetings that night after school, and we aren't able to do personal things on our computers during the day (not that we have time, ha!) Maybe next time! I signed up for the emails, but actually never got any. I had just been following the website and this thread, so that's how I knew.

I wanted to run Wine & Dine anyway but knowing that my kids are off school on Tuesday for Veterans Day was a selling point for me. We'll likely fly down Friday after school and they'll only miss Monday.
I am certainly glad that I discovered runDisney before this sell-out craziness began and I totally feel for everyone who was shut out of this race. This will be my first Wine & Dine, although I have run in Marathon Weekend several times and did Princess and ToT each once.
My work/family life doesn't permit me to run as many runDisney events as I'd like but I certainly have been fortunate to try a few different ones over the years.

Does anyone know how many runners will be doing the half marathon for Wine & Dine?

How do you spend the day of the race? I can't imagine walking around a park all day being a good idea. Sitting at the pool all day seems like a bad idea? What do you do?

I completely skipped the park because I knew that if I went in I would regret it. I can keep the walking down at Disneyland since I am here frequently but when I come to Disney World I tend to rack up the miles. So I did Epcot and Magic Kingdom the first two days of our trip and then Animal Kingdom the day after the race. We flew out Monday. Had a good time.

Just a general gist of what I did instead so you can have an idea of what maybe to do. Last year my Mom and I saw Thor: The Dark World around 11:30 over at Downtown Disney. Had lunch in the theater (since it was at the dine in portion of the theater). And then headed back to the hotel where we were staying right after. I spent maybe two hours at the pool relaxing and then we went and had an early dinner about 4:30 over at Olivia's Cafe at Key West (we were staying at Port Orleans French Quarter so it was pretty much right next door). Before coming back to the hotel to get changed and then catch the bus.

I'll probably be chasing my kids around a park like usual. They don't care if I'm doing a race! Maybe I'll pick MK or HS because they are smaller.

I spent the morning hanging out in my room and watching a bit of tv. Went to Downtown Disney for an hour or two, and had lunch at Earl's. Came back to the room to rest, got ready, and then headed to the race.

Basically, I just took it easy. I did not want to wear myself out before running that night.

I pulled some corral info for various races earlier and believe last year's W&D had just over 14,000 registered.

That was my guess, too. So W&D has at least 10,000 fewer runners than the January Half.... That makes me super excited!

Completely off topic, but I used to have a greyhound (named Moses) who looked SO much like the greyhound in your picture. Best dog I ever had. (And I am also from PA which is kind of funny.)

I got my Dumbo Double Dare from Jim Stone, Acclaim Travel. I talked to him on Mon and he said that he has W&D bibs too. Great guy! Good luck!
That goes for everyone looking to register. Try the official travel planner to see if they have bibs available for W&D. When I inquired about the DL half a week or so ago, Get Travel said they had them (and no active dot com processing fee).

All signed up for the 5K, got my room booked at the Swan and now all I need is for Southwest to open their dates up!! :)

I am looking for some park tickets as well, if anyone has any places they recommend or should I go directly through Disney for that?

The prices on the online ticket store through runDisney seem to be really reasonable...the code they sent wasn't working, try WINEDINE14.

Does anyone think they will change the course a bit or do you guys think they will keep the same route as 2013?
