Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

I'll still believe the FF thing when I see it. I think it would make a lot of sense for Sony to finally make the games PS3 exclusive, but I haven't seen it yet.

Anyway, from the last stats I saw, far more people had HD DVD than Blu-ray. I'll have to check my numbers...

Okay, so it looks like Blu-ray is in more homes and the movies are being purchased more...almost completely because of the PS3. Ack. But the vast majority of people don't have either.

So anyway, back on topic. Nintendo questions...anyone? :)

Well, we have found our first disappointment - Mario & Sonic at the Olympics :sad1: We tried it yesterday and it was not well liked by anyone. I can't put my finger on exactly why none of us liked it. We all thought it would be much more fun than it actually was. I think I might be heading to Amazon/Ebay with this one.

My kids have quite a bit of TRU credit to use so I think we might pick up Mater National. Anyone played this one yet? DS#1 loves Cars on PS2 so I think it might be a good choice.

As for skins, we received 2 with our extra wiimotes and no one likes them! We all do perfectly fine without them (although we do insist everyone use the wrist straps!!!)

BTW, I'm up to 13 stars in Super Mario Galaxy

I'm sorry to hear you aren't liking that game. Mario & Sonic at the Olympics is our FAVORITE--so far! Have you played enough to unlock all the new stuff? We have had a ball with the rowing and archery, particularly. You have to play the games to unlock all the new ones. I think the only thing left for us to unlock is the 10,000m diving. Can't wait for that one! I bought this game mostly because my kids are swimmers and I wanted to see what it was like (not very impressed--only 2 events) and got it at the $37 price when Target had it in their ad the week after Christmas--just had to get it at WalMart (used my raincheck and they honored the price even though the ad is over now) since there was nothing on the shelf at Target! The only thing I don't really like about it is that whhen you set world records or earn medals, it only 'counts' if you are playing in 1P mode. So last night when I set the world record in the 400m race against DH I decided to play single-player to get my mii the credit! ;)

I'm glad you are enjoying it. It seems you are in the minority, though I think people are more likely to complain than to not, so that probably accounts for a lot.

Plus, I think there is a special learning curve for this game. Just about everyone is saying that at least at the start the game can be hard to get used to. I'll add your review to the second post, so people see the different opinions.

Can someone point me it the direction of getting networked with my Wii and router and all that stuff and also what is the benefit?

I tried connecting once and got an error (something about my firewall and router)

The best place to go is Nintendo.com You can enter the error message you get and it will tell you what is wrong.

You might have to lower your firewall in order to use it with the Wii. And some (very few) routers are not compatible with the Wii(but that is rarely the problem.)

The benefit is being able to play games online versus other players, to share Mii with your friends, and to get all of the channels available (Weather, voting, etc). You can also doenload the browser and surf the Internet through the Wii. That costs something now (it was free for a while). It's awesome for watching YouTube videoes. There are also a few websites (wiiarcade) that make flash games that can be played online through the wii. Some of them are really cool.

dd7 and dd9 received a wii from "Santa" (who found one back in August) and it was a HUGE hit! I loved that it was super easy to setup and very easy to add to our wireless network (loved that I didn't have to spend time hunting down the mac address). Thanks for all the suggestions/reviews on this thread -- really helped me decide what to buy.

What "Santa" brought:
wii w/will sports (Wow, everyone LOVES these games!!!)
wii play w/extra remote (cow game and shooting game big hits)
extra nunchuk
Pokeman Battle Revolution (Both dds have a ds with pokemon pearl and pokemon diamond so this was a must have)
Hananna Montanna (dd7 loves this -- dd9 not so interested)
Carnival (GREAT for family play)
Shrek III (Kids seemed to really like it but have only played it once)
2 2000 wii point cards (downloaded Pokemon Snap and Opera browser so far -- very easy to use)

In-laws came to visit from out of town and LOVED our wii - they want one now too! Grandma's hip was pretty sore after a bowling marathon on New Year's day though. :)

In-laws brought:
Rayman Rabbids (Not sure about name/spelling and dds LOVE it!!!)
Petz Horses (Not played yet)
Petz Cats (dd7 likes but only played once)

Hope to get Playground and Cooking Mama soon

My kids don't enjoy Mario Party 8. Are we missing something??? What makes this game so fun?

How old are they?

I was pretty disappointed in it too. I think the biggest issue is that there are better Party games out there now. Before it was almost all MP. I really expected the new controller to make it even more fun, but one of our friends really doesn't like using it, so that kills the whole party thing.

So you're not the only one.

harleyquinn/Horned King - Congrats on your purchase, let me know how you guys like it.

Regarding the Wii zapper and Links crossbow training, is it worth it to buy this for $20 or is this just another way to take our money? I don't know how much my boys will use the zapper since they like the gloves/jackets or whatever they are that nintendo sent free, so then is the Link game worth this purchase or not really? We already have plenty of games with tons of mini games like Carnival Games, Mario Party 8, Playground, Wario Ware & Olympics.

Even if you dont wanna use the wii zapper, you bascially get the game for $20. From what my sister told me, you dont have to use the wii zapper if you dont want to. You can just use the controllers without the wii zapper. $20 for another game, not bad. Could be worse. If you dont like the wii zapper, keep the game and sell the wii zapper part on ebay or something.

Thanks!
Unfortunatly the ONE game I wanted turned out to be an Xbox game that doesn't work on the 360.:sad2: So now I'm looking at Rock Band. lol $13.99 vs $169.99.

Honestly, no I don't think you'll get a lot of use out of it. DH has played it once or twice and I still haven't touched it. And I'm a huge Zelda fan. I think you've got enough games already to justify getting that one too.

You are biased cuz you're such a big Zelda freak (like me).:thumbsup2 But Crossbow training is not a necessary purchase for a family that already has plenty of other games to play.

Maybe you can reconsider it when you run out of things to play.

And no you don't have to use the attachment to play, but it is the only game I've heard so far where the zapper is fun to use.

If you've got an extra $20 or a gift card laying around, it isn't a BAD purchase, but you could probably find something better to put the money towards.

They are 6 and 10.

They are 6 and 10.

Well, that's not the problem then.

It's really not all that fun with just two people, maybe if you played with them too?

The good thing about that game is that it is accessible to kids and parents alike and is much fun played as a family.

Maybe we just need to play it a little more. I did play with them. Is there more than just a boardgame and the mini games within the board game?

Nope. :( That's it. I mean you do get a bunch of different game boards and mini games, but that's basically it. The Monopoly type board is pretty fun since you have to buy the property instead of just reaching the star.

One of my biggest issues with it is that its all about luck--half the time it doesn't matter if you win all the minigames--its about getting those stars.

It's a fun game to pick up once in a while to play together, but it's not like Mario Galaxy with a big story and constant new stuff.

I won't be buying Mario Party 9. :sad2:

Speaking of Mario Galaxy - that one is great. With DD10, she is #1, and I'm #2, and then she likes it. DD6 is #2. When does this game end, though? I need to get the laundry done? And, I hate that DH can see how much I've played through the day. I just want to finish it :)

Cool thread! Glad I found it. Can someone help me with DS New Super Mario Brothers world 6, level 4? About half way through, before the flag, there is a red power switch that makes the red platform appear to allow you to continue on. HOW do you get up there? I've only done it once and it was by accident. Somehow I "bounced" off the wall. Thanks!!!!

lol, there are 120 stars total--some of which are very hard to get. But you only need about 50 or 60 to actually beat the game. So--it can go on forever. I remember it took DH like a year to finish Mario 64 (also had 120 stars), but he took his time with it. I'll ask how many hours DH has played. I know he had 98 stars the last I saw.

Oh wow...it's been a long time since I played that game.

Go here www.gamefaqs.com and search for the game and then click on one of the faq/walkthoughs...I'll try and find the answer for you.
