When you did that did it change any of your existing things connected wireless through that router? I don't want to change it and then reconfig all the computers in the house.

Also, since I'm lazy, how do you change the channel and is one better than the other? Thanks so much!
It didn't effect anything else that was connected wirlelessly through the router.
I found the information from the nintendo website. It just involves going to the router website and selecting the channel under wireless settings. It doesn't matter if it is 1 or 11.
Here are 2 links with info about the router's channel settings:
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/onlineWirelessSlow.jsp
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/routers/en_na/routerIndex.jsp
Hope this helps.

Any word on whether there will be a DDR game for the wii?

We got DD14 the Mario version for gamecube last year but it didn't go over as well as I had hoped. I'd love to get a "real" DDR game for her.

Just letting anyone know that the Wii works with the new FIOS (fiber optic internet service).

We got FIOS today (one of the first in our city!) and the Wii responded fine to FIOS configurations.

Any comments on the Trauma Center game? Is it fun or just gross??

Also, are the old-school Mario games available for download NOW or at a later date? Trying to see if Santa should put a download card in the stockings or not??

Reviews on trauma center are spotty at best. The complaints are the old school style texting of words for dialogue. There are no true speaking parts of the characters if that makes sense. From what I have read it comes off as an old school 80s game.

Thanks!

We really, really want FIOS but it's not available here yet.

We went in and changed the channel to 1 and 11 and still nothing. I think it may have something to do with the WEP. t shows a place to put a key but it seems to default to 5 characters and it seems we put in more.
I don't know. Guess we'll have to play around some more.

Nothing has been announced so far.

You could try calling Nintendo and maybe they could help you troubleshoot.
Also there are discussion forums on the Nintendo website and also on Gamespot and IGN. That's how I solved my problem, by looking up on those discussion forums.

I dont know if this has been said, I have not all the new posts. We had a game that stopped working on the gamecube a couple of years ago, and we thought lets try it in the wii it worked. I am soo excited it was one of my ds favorite games and we had just decided to buy a new one. so if you have games that stopped working try them in the wii. after the kids went to bed we took it out and played and then packed it back up.

Wow! That is really wierd! Thanks for posting!

I appoligize, I did not read all of the threads, to see if my question has been answered.

I got a wii last night :cool1: only seven hours of freezing. The kids will open a great gift on Christmas morning.

I lOVE sonic the hedgehog.

Here are my questions.. two parts.

Can you buy just one game at a time, without a wii points card, so using a credit card perhaps. (I dont' think I need 2000 points, when I only want sonic as of now). So.. can I only spend $5 immediately instead of $20. (does that make sense?)

Second.. does sonic the hedgehog work with the game cube controller. I don't want to buy the classic if I don't need to yet.

Thanks!

With a credit card, the minimum number of points that you can buy is $10.
Sonic the Hedgehog can be used with the game cube controller.

Thank you so much!

One more question. I see at the stores, that they sell 1 gig sd memory cards for wii..

Do I need one of these? Isn't there a hard drive that stores the information? will any brand SD card work? what's a recommended size to get?

oops, more than one question.

I just want it to be ready to go christmas morning.

The cards that say "Wii" on them are rip-offs. Almost any modern SD card will work. I say modern, because I have heard of a few incompatability issues with some older ones, but any SD card you walk into the store and buy today will work.

Nintendo says the Wii can only use a card as large as 2GB. Some people have reported success in using 4GB SD cards, but compatability is not assured and you may be disapointed. If you have a 4GB card, go ahead and try it out - but I wouldn't buy any card bigger than 2GB specifically to use with the Wii.

As to needing one, no, you won't right away. The Wii has 512MB of internal memory, which is enough to hold game saves for many games and many virtual console titles. It's hard to give an exact number since each game uses a different amount of memory, but it's definately going to be awhile before you need one for anything other than backups.

That said, I bought a 1GB off of eBay for cheap to use to look at pictures in the Photo Channel. My camera uses CompactFlash, so I just used the card reader I have attached to my PC (very cheap, under $15) and copied the pictures to SD for viewing on my Wii (also put a few mp3's as well). I put the pics in one folder, and the mp3's in another. The Wii instantly found them both during the slideshow, and I was able to look at all of my pics from my recent trip with Disney music attached. Very cool.

I also like how the SD card organizes files. It doesn't care how you organize them on your PC, which I like, and it saves all Nintendo data in a folder marked "private". So you can use the same SD card to download pics from your PC that you use to backup your Zelda game saves or Virtual Console backups.

The OP may also want to add a bit more information about connecting the Wii to the internet.

There are three possible methods :

#1 - Using a wireless router, connection should be effortless. If you prefer that method, connection with your Wii is pretty easy - just telling your Wii where to look.

#2 - Using the Wi-Fi USB Connector, the same one that works with the NDS and NDS Lite. This connects to the USB port in your computer, not your Wii, and creates a wireless access point for your Wii and NDS to use. They cost about $40 and can be found in many stores (Best Buy, Target, etc.) and are available from Nintendo's store (store.nintendo.com). You must have a broadband connected Windows XP for it to work, and it is incompatable with some firewalls (you may need to shut them off when you use it).

#3 - In January, Nintendo is releasing a Wired LAN Adapter through their website (same store above). This is for people like myself who have Ethernet wired homes or Routers and prefer not to use Wireless connections because of security issues or whatever other reason. This adapter will connect to the USB port on your Wii, and then you plug an Ethernet cable into one end, and the other end of the cable into your router. It is unknown at this time if the LAN Adapter will be available in stores, but you can pre-order it from the store.nintendo.com website for $25.

Many people confuse the LAN Adapter and the WiFi Connector since both use USB, and it's an important distinction to make.

All that said, there is an unoffically supported Wired adapter out there (that quickly sold out at every website once it was posted around the Internet) that I've been using and it works great. The assumption by the fan community is that it must have the same chipset as the official Nintendo version coming out next month.

Sorry for the repeated replies, LOL, but I've seen a few unanswered questions.

To begin with, bookmark the following link : North American Virtual Console Releases - Wikipedia. They are keeping up a detailed list of what came out when, and what is expected to be coming out on what dates. If you are in other regions, you should see links from the main Wikipedia Virtual Console Wii article for your region. It's important to note that each region has different releases at this point, and it seems this will continue into the future.

New games are released to VC in the North American Region at 9AM PST on Mondays. So far, they have been averaging four new titles per week.

If you look at the Wikipedia articles there are some charts regarding controller compatability with VC titles. So far, the Gamecube controller is compatable with every game released. Nintendo has stated that the Gamecube controller will work with all first-party (NES, SNES, N64) games, and MOST Genesis/TG16 games (though none that are incompatable have been released thus far).

To be honest, I think we'll see very few titles that aren't compatable with the GC controller. The GC controller has enough buttons to remap that it can easily replace both the Genesis and TG16 controllers. I guess statistically they could prove that if a game used every single button and every single option there might be some arcane combination that won't work, but I think it's just a marketing thing. They don't want to tell people "no, you don't really need a classic controller."

That said, I LOVE THE CLASSIC CONTROLLER. Somehow, playing with a big ugly wire hanging out of my Wii felt so...confining. Once I got a classic controller, I played many more VC games. What I like best about it is that it just plugs into the Wii Remotie for power, but you can just set the Wii Remote off to the side or in your lap or wherever. Since it only uses the bluetooth to send data from the classic controller, it doesn't even need to see the Sensor Bar. It's really nice to be seated, pick up the Wii Remote, turn on my Wii from across the room, and start playing without having to change carts or what have you.

So no, if you can't get one by Christmas you won't notice it. Right now, and likely for the forseeable future, every VC game will be GameCube controller compatable, and many (mainly the NES and TG16 games) will be playable with just the Wii Remote. However, at $20 the Classic Controller is a great thing to pick up when you can - it's just the nicest, most comfortable controller I've used.

If you check out the Wikipedia link, you'll see that there are already release dates for the coming Genesis and TG16 games. Basically, the fan community has a good idea of what is coming in general as all of these games are from the period before there was an ESRB ratings system, so before they go on VC they are getting rated by the board. The ESRB website lists all the games it has approved/reviewed recently, so it was easy to get list of what we can expect in the coming months based on what they have run before the ESRB. Nintendo is being closed lipped about when it's first party titles are coming, but Sega and other companies have announced many of their dates (if you look, for example, Toe Jam and Earl is coming on Christmas Day).

Finally, here are some dates to note -

December 20th : Launch of the Weather/Forcast Channel
December 23rd : Expected "surprise" launch of the Internet Channel
Jan 27th : Launch of the News Channel

Thanks for all of the detailed explinations. It did a wonderful job of explaining.

We have a router in our house, with a wireless network, that is security enabled, so a code has to be entered to connect.

My question.. is the wii always connected to the internet? Are the virus, spyware, ect concerns? Second.. is it possible to keep our secure connection? i.e. entering in the code?

Thanks!

NP at all!

If you have a wireless router, you are all set. While the NDS is only compatable with the WEP (not so great) encryption, the Wii is compatable with WEP, and WAP as well as WAP2. You should not have a problem entering your code on your Wii; however, I have heard it is easier to do if your security code is all digits instead of letters and numbers.

You will have the option of turning WiiConnect24 on or off. If you have it off, you will only connect to the Internet when you open the Internet channel, or go to the Wii Shop, etc.

Right now, WiiConnect is mainly used for eMail (when you get email on your Wii it glows blue - it's really cool!), but games like Elebits are starting to use it. Eventually, for instance, if you have WiiConnect24 enabled, someone would be able to visit your Animal Crossing town over the Internet while your Wii is off, if you've authorized them too.

It's a closed system; while I won't go out on a limb and say a virus would never happen, it's just not practical. Since it's a closed system, it's only allowed to communicate with Nintendo's servers; even the web browsing will be done by proxy, from what I understand. I just don't think it's really a concern - and if it ever became one, you can bet you'd hear about it (look at all the news coverage a dozen broken wrist straps has gotten, LOL).

So yes, it should work with your connection's security precautions (I won't go so far as to say "secure connection", as I don't believe there is a such thing with wireless - yes, I'm very anal in regards to that LOL), and no, I wouldn't be worrying about security at this point. Your Wii will defend itself. ;)

Good luck!

The Wii rocks! We have one. :)

Be sure to update so you can get the Weather Channel on the 20th!

The Photo Channel is great. We put a display of our Disney photos set to 'Wishes' on the TV. Very touching.

I'm excited about the weather channel. We know you can view Forcasts from all over the world via a "Google Maps" type interface (without the zoom in detail of course, LOL), but I'm hoping we'll be able to set multiple locations for "at a glance" forecasts. I really want to set one for home, and one for Disney so I always know what the weather is there LOL.

I love the photo channel as well. I'm really hoping for a feature to save slideshows (you know, one set of pics and a certain set of mp3's) so you don't have to manually set it up each time. Other than that, though, it's an excellent feature that I'm getting a ton of use out of.

Yay for Wii :)
