Official Wii/DS Q/A thread. FAQ in first post! Game reviews in second post!

Has anyone played either Red Steel or Madden for the Wii? How are they? We bought them today but we won't be playing them until Christmas when we open up the Wii.

I haven't played Madden, but I briefly got to play Red Steel and was impressed. I have it on my Gamefly queue right now and am hoping I get it before the weekend.

BTW, if anyone ends up signing up with Gamefly (it's like Netflix but for games) I'd be so happy if you'd send me a PM for my friend code first - I'm trying to earn a free DS Lite for a deserving little girl. (Sorry for the commercial, LOL).

The Forecast Channel went live today, one day early!

Very neat. Right now you can only set one default location (although you can always use the map to go anywhere), but I can't wait until I can see home and Disney at a glance. :)

Yeah the Forecast Channel rocks. I timed it, from the time I press the power button till the time I can see the forecast for the day is only 31 seconds! Fast! :)

I like checking out the temperuate at Disney and at the South Pole. :rotfl:

DS has Madden and thinks it's fun if you want interactive action - you actually throw and kick the ball a :cool1: and it takes a bit to get onto that. He also has it for PSP and feels that's a more "relaxed" game with a little better graphics.

Has anyone found a good game for 3-4 players (tweens and parents)?? We'll have a crowd on Christmas and suspect many will want to play something besides sports.....

Sounds like fun. :thumbsup2

What an awesome thread :thumbsup2

We got extremely lucky and found 1 Wii sitting on a shelf at our local Shopko one evening while looking for a PS2 game. I grabbed up the slip and ran to the check out and was able to buy it

My DS (13) is going to be sooooo excited! He is getting this from his grandparents for Xmas so it will be fun for all the kids to use that come at Xmas later in the day :cool1:

He tried out the game Zelda at Gamestop and didn't want to leave. Kept asking to go back and play it again. He got "hooked" on the fishing section. We told him that it is "impossible to get" but maybe for his birthday :teeth:

It is going to be such a fun Xmas :woohoo:

LOL me too! I can't wait until we can set more than one as default, so I can see both home and Disney at a glance. ;)

It will just get faster as well once all the kinks get worked out. That's one of the things I like the most about the Wii in general. I timed how long it took for me to go from sitting on my couch and deciding I wanted to play a Virtual Console game, picking up the controller, turning the thing on, and actually at the menu screen of the game - never took more than 30 seconds.

The reason I like this is because I enjoy gaming in short bursts more often than not. Sure, I'll spend a couple of hours on a rainy afternoon playing Zelda or another game, but in general I want to play for 15-20 minutes at a time and Virtual Console makes that easy enough to be worth it. I've been playing Mario 64 like this - picking it up and playing for several short sessions each day, getting a star or two each time. With regular carts and cds and messing with wired controllers and boot times...it's usually not worth it for short play sessions, or the games don't allow you to play for such a short period; I love how the basic NES and TG16 games on Virtual Console that don't have save functions inherent in the game let you "pause" and come back later. Like right now, I know I left off on world 3-2 of Bonk's Adventure.

Oh, don't count out Sports - it's really fun with a large group playing over and over LOL.

There are some great party games coming soon - Wario Ware in January, Wii Play in February (it was announced today it is being delayed a month from Jan - and remember, this is the one that gives you a remote for free, so the game is really only $10 if you count the $40 controller), and Mario Party 8 (going to be the BEST GAME EVER!!!) in March.

However, right now I hear Rayman Rabbids or whatever it's called, LOL, has a ton of fun minigames appropriate for play like that, and Elebits isn't a party game but entertaining enough that people will enjoy taking turns.

I just can't wait for the really party games to come out...the Gamecube Disney Party game wasn't so great (though I'd still die for a copy!), so I hope they try again for the Wii. The Wii was just MADE for party games!

What a great surprise! I'm sure he's going to love it - especially since it's so unexpected. Just hide it well...when I was 13 I had a way of finding things, LOL. ;)

Whoa, I almost forgot!

The Opera web browser (the "Internet Channel") has now been officially announced for Friday! It will be the "beta" version (i.e., not final and perfect, but from what I understand it is pretty close), and FREE.

The final version comes out in March, and will be free to download until June 2007. After that, people who haven't already downloaded it will have to pay 500 Wii Points for it. So basically, if you buy a Wii or wait to download it until after next June, you will pay for it, but if you download it now, and then the free update in March, it will be yours and you won't have to pay. Nice little bonus. :)

Sorry, I haven't been around lately. I'm glad it seems like people are finding systems.

Thanks top everyone who has answered questions while I was gone!

And thanks for the Opera update! Everyone make to download it before it costs $$$!

And good news for me and DH, we got DSL!!! After 2 years of waiting, but the timing is awesome.

I can't wait to chat with you all from my Wii!

Reviews for Red Steel have been very mixed. Many reviewers had very high expectations. The game is not as intuitive as the other games. It's sometimes hard to control. But the game itself is great with a good story.

As others have said, Madden rocks. If you've ever played Madden before, be ready for the first truely innovative version of it. It's really awesome!

BTW Kid Icarus and Duck Hunt have been announced for the Virtual console. Can't wait to shoot at the laughing dog again!!

Personally I LOVE madden!!1 I have been playing madden football since it's Genesis days(10+years now) this is truely the most fun Ihave had playign it since the snes days when my best buddy and I would tarde teh game back and forth daily until we reached the playoff and had a showdown for the superbowl.

For the controls.....AMAZING!!! a simple flick of the wrist and the ball goes flying...and for the psp, ps2xbox, ec.t versions being more relaxed.....I guess it's all up to the person. The only thing I find more work on the wii is the kicking...other then that I can get way more confortable (lying down on my couch most of the time) with hands far apart(not having to hold them close) do to the cord between nunchuck and wiimote.

Graphics wise...I definatley would not say the PSP has better graphics...not by a long shot! 360 yes..psp no way...Espically since I have the Composet cables for my wii and run it in 480i.(hi def)

As harley said red steel is a mixed bag.

Once We get our Wii online in the next few weeks we'll have to all trade friend codes so we can send our Mii's out to each other! and have a parade!

Nice! Nintendo just released the following info about the next two weeks of virtual console availability. I'm so happy about Street Fighter II! I'll be downloading that Xmas morning for sure!

This year Santa is getting some competition from another jolly guy with a big belly and a red cap. We’re talking about video game icon Mario(TM), of course. As a special holiday surprise for Wii(TM) owners from Nintendo, the original Super Mario Bros. ™ game for the Nintendo Entertainment System(R) will appear in the Wii Shop Channel and be downloadable for 500 Wii Points. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the game. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets.

The classic game will make Christmas morning extra special, just as it did more than two decades ago. Super Mario Bros. reigns as perhaps the best-known and most-played game on any video game system in history. More than 40.2 million copies of the game found their way into homes worldwide. In addition to Super Mario Bros., other top-notch offerings available on Dec. 25 include:

* Street Fighter(R) II: The World Warrior (Super NES(R), 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): This game revolutionized the fighting-game genre with characters that had unique fighting skills, speed, special moves and unique endings.

* Super Castlevania(R) IV (Super NES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Simon Belmont uses his trusty whip to fight the powers of evil on his way to Dracula’s Castle.

* Toe Jam & Earl(TM) (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Two fun-loving aliens crash on Earth and must find 10 pieces of their spaceship so they can get back home to Planet Funkotron.

* R-TYPE(R) (TurboGrafx16, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): This is a completely faithful port - right down to the character details - of the famous shooting-game masterpiece.

Games available on Jan. 1 include:

* Baseball (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Play nine innings of fierce sandlot competition with classic NES graphics.

* Urban Champion(TM) (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Don’t let the big, bad bully of the neighborhood push you around! Players fight for the right to walk the street.

In just five weeks the library of classic games available through the Wii Shop Channel has grown to 33 titles. Every Monday at 9 a.m. Pacific, Nintendo adds more classic games to the channel. For detailed information about each game, visit Nintendo’s Online Press Room at press.nintendo.com. For more information about Wii, please visit Wii.com.

SF2 if it was turbo....

Xmas morning I'm definately picking up SF2 and Super Castlevania. I have no need for SMB (I have it unlocked in Animal Crossing, so it's not worth $5 to save me putting in a disc).

SF2 was a Christmas gift the first time around on SNES, so it will really put me in the spirit to get that one. I never played Super Castlevania (never got into that series when I was younger) but I'm really excited to try it out.

If you search Wii Easter Eggs--you will find out a few things in Wii sports.

My DH figured out how to change the color of your bowling ball (before you turn pro), how to change the type of tennis court and one more thing--(I can't remember what)

So search that out and you will out something fun.

Talk to me about being able to chat with other WII owners through the console. First I have heard of it, but I don't know a whole lot.

We are hooked up to the internet, but I haven't visited the shop yet. Pointless I suppose with out the old type joystick/remote/whatever you want to call it.

I am finding myself loving Golf, bowling and Baseball on the CD that came with the system.

I have yet to find controllers, old or new for the system. I keep looking.

My son's strap broke. Thankfully not into anything LOL.

The guy at Gamestop told me that the Wii remote could be used for the old school games?? (at least, for Mario which is what I asked about). He kind of guesstured like you would turn the remote sideways and use it like a regular controller? I can't check it out since my Wii is wrapped and waiting for Santa.
