No, I use the MT10s. Very comfortable and good for running on a variety of surfaces. I have some VFF Bikilas as well, but use those mostly on trails.

I tried on the New Balance Minimus today and LOVED them! I thought that maybe I would switch back and forth from the Nike Frees to these as the distance increases. I can't wait! Getting a new pair of shoes is like Christmas!!:goodvibes

I have not been able to get comfortable in a minimalist shoe. Some days feel good, other days not. I did just order some Altras. They have minimalist and ones with cushioning, but the main features are the zero drop (heel and forefoot cushioning is exactly the same thickness) and a non-tapered toe box. I will let you know how I like them! For the past year I have been running in Asics Cumulus.

I haven't done a full yet, but for halfs at Disney, I just rely on their water stops. They are good race organizers, have a lot of stops and I'm never worried they will have run out. I do bring my own fuel. For halfs, I use a sport beans, Gu or chocolate agave (slower burn energy than Gu type gels, which is good for my walk/run pace). Given that it will take me 6 hours to finish the full, I'm going to have to bring something that is actual food, I think. Maybe a Larabar or those little Justin's individual peanut butters.

Did my 11 mile training run this weekend. It was very tough towards the end, made me start questioning, "Whose crazy idea was it to run a marathon?!" My right ankle is bugging me - a fair bit yesterday, less today, though nothing hurt during the run. I'll take it easy today and tomorrow and may do pool running on Wednesday instead of my training run outside.

I would love to hear how they work for you! I got the New Balance Minimus today and am going to go back and forth between that and the Nike Frees. Thanks for the info!

It will also take me 6 hours. After my 14 on Friday, I starting with the same self doubt that you indicate....whose crazy idea was this?! How far do you plan to go in training? I was thinking 22 miles, but gosh that is gonna be a loooonnnngggg day! At least I know there are others out there that will be about the same speed. Wish I was faster, but between the asthma and my high heart rate, I guess I should be happy with even being able to so it!

Two questions PRmamiDEdos:
Ever try the melatonin again?
How in the world do you get the ticker on the bottom. I have cut and pasted all four of the different URL types and none work! Help!:badpc:

Has anyone ever run with the water bottle that straps to your hand? Is it comfortable or cumbersome?

I have been using one, I like it. It isn't too uncomfortable, I like it because I get a lot more water than I do with my fuel belt. I usually switch it from hand to hand during my long runs. I like being in control of my own water so I can run past most of the water stations, plus I need more water than that. I have one with a zippered pocket on the front and I keep my cell phone in there.

You have to do it from a desktop using the CP signature settings. Use the forum URL (non-HTML).
HTH.

Funny story, I carry my iPhone (Otterbox case) in my hand while I run. Usually it's in my right and I've noticed my right bicep is bigger. I have to remember to switch often before I end up looking like a freak, LOL.

Sent from my iPad using DISBoards. Please excuse the typos.

I have a Nathan bottle. It is the smaller size otter with a storage bag. I really like it. Perfect for between water fountains:).

My wife likes them, but I personally became very annoyed with it. Once I drank some of the liquid, so that the bottle was only partially full, I found the sloshing to be very disruptive to the rhythm of my arms. I found myself constantly passing it back and forth.

Having a water belt with smaller containers on each side (I use Amphipod), I drink out of them equally so I don't feel unbalanced. You can get up to four 10oz bottles on the belt I use. When I run an actual race, I remove the bottles from the belt, and just use the pouch to hold my Gu's.

Very weird question - anyone ever run in a leotard? Thinking about marathon costume options and I want a nude colored top (so I can then put the costume pieces over it) and a leotard is all I can find that's long sleeves.

I run with a bottle on my hand for my long runs. I actually tried some on asset the running store until I found one that was comfortable for me. I like it.

That is pretty awesome! I have not yet tried the FiveFingers shoes because of the lack of cushion. I have a pair of Altra Running Instincts shoes as well as my Kinvaras and PureFlows. They are a minimalist zero-drop shoe. I enjoy running in them but I have not tried running more than 6-7 miles in them because of the lack of cushioing.

At 245lbs, I know that cushion is something my feet need just because of the stresses that the weight puts on my feet. I am a mid-foot striker and I have found that, for me, I like the 4mm heel drop shoes with some cushioning. 4mm heel to toe variance is considered minimalist, and it does take time for someone who has been running with a more substantial ratio (like 10mm or more) to transition to the lower heel to toe ratios (mostly because of the added work that the calves and arches do when running minimalist/barefoot).

Maybe when I have lost some more weight, I will take my Instincts further and see how they work out. :)

I have a two pair of Altras... a pair of Instincts and a pair of Adams.

I bought them for walking/casual wear... the instincts are for business casual/going out in the evening. The Adams are what I wear all day when I am not running.

I may try running in the Instincts at some point. I just started with the VFFs and have never looked back.

I'm also right at 240 now, down from 321 at the start of the year... so for me, it feels pretty light right now... still have a way to go... another 25 - 30 pounds at least... hopefully down to 225ish by the end of the year.

I think having been pretty active in taewkwondo for about 20 months before starting running really helped strengthen my feet and has served me well in getting into running (especially minimalist running).

Wow! Down 81lbs in nine months is an awesome achievement! Congratulations! :). Yeah, I'd like to lose another 20lbs by the end of the year as well. My end goal is to get down to 200lbs.

Some random thoughts here:

I recently switched from NB MT10s to NB 1400s. As I was increasing my mileage my feet were getting achy and tired. The 1400s are very cushy and light. I'm not crazy about the colors, little too bright for me, but I really love these shoes. I only use them for running. I still have my MT10s for every day use.

Since this was the 13 mile long run weekend, the timing worked out to do a half marathon on Sunday. I'm using 2:1 run/walk and it's been great. I ran straight through until about mile 2.5 then switched my timer on and went from there. There were times when I ran through my walk breaks because we were either going downhill or I felt really strong. I turned my timer off after I took water at mile 12 and hit the last mile hard. I felt great at the end. I'm a little sore today but nothing like I have been in the past. I'm a big believer in walk breaks now. Galloway's website says that 2:1 is supposed to give you about a 12 min/mile. My pace was 11:54. ::yes::

I've tried carrying water with me both in my hand and on a belt and I'm not a fan of either. I have a pair of shorts from Road Runner with an awesome zipper pocket in the back that holds my snack size ziploc baggie of beans and chews. And a gel or two fits back there also. :thumbsup2 It makes it very easy to plan my nutrition around the water stops.

I have never been a fan of carrying anything in my hand...whether cd player back in the day or even a water bottle.

Personally I don't like the sloshing of the water in my hand. I can barely stand it in my fuel belt. I am crazy like that.

I agree. I don't even like carrying my phone on my arm. I have my ipod clipped to my shorts and my roadid bracelet, that's it. Anything else drives me nuts.

I think it would make using the toilet really difficult! I find it hard enough to negotiate the porta-potties! :lmao: And it might be hot on Marathon Weekend so you might not want long sleeves. A leotard will limit your ability to remove layers if it gets warm. Just my opinion, of course. :thumbsup2

I also cannot run with a bottle in my hand...I carry my GU in my pockets and leave water in a convenient spot in my neighborhood so I can lap back around when I need it. The water stops at races have never caused me any problems...I choose a spot, grab the cup and keep moving!

I used an Amphipod hand bottle for runs of up to about 10 miles, and I'll be switching to a Camelbak backpack for longer runs. I don't love carrying the bottle in my hand, but I've recently grown to HATE wearing water bottles on belts. The backpack isn't perfect, but it's my favorite option so far.

I can do I phone on arm... But new road Id bracelet is starting to bother me. Necessary evil i guess.
