You can definitely get back on track--just don't rush into it. Give yourself all the recovery time you need (and your doc says). Try and keep up whatever XT you can safely do. You don't need to train for WDW til fall and even if you need to build up more base, you have several months to work on that.

And to all the Detroit-area WISH'ers.....let's send our thought waves towards Delta. What is with this $300+ stuff. I want under $200!

I agree... Do not feel like you are late or behind because you are not. x-train without weighting across the sf. I am sure you were given specific no's. Hang in there, it's only 2 weeks. Once able to go, walk the first couple days and then pick up miles slowly.

I'm currently booked at SSR but am thinking of changing over to OKW if we can walk to the corrals. We were lucky this past January in that we must have missed the bus issue where people were getting to the start late for the half.

How long is the walk and how long does it take to get to the corrals from OKW? I'm assuming you request near the Hospitality House for your room?

JMASGAT and CEWAIT,

thanks for your support! :thumbsup2

appreciating the positive thinking and encouragement ... I WILL run with you all! :cool1:

Depending on where you are in the resort, it can range from a quarter mile all the way up to 5/8 mile. SSR is not much further, just walk along the 'nature trail' connecting SSR and OKW. You will not be the only one there.

Now that this have become an active and open discussion, I wonder if WDWM will react? I am betting no since the intersection of Bonnet Creek and Vacation Way is also a popular kiss and run drop off spot.

I was thinking the Minnie Sparkle skirt too with a black shirt. I would love to do the sparkley Minnie head band but I don't think it will stay on my head well and would just annoy me the whole time I'm running.

I did the Princess Half with the Minnie Sparkle Skirt, a black top and the sequined Minnie headband style ears. The key to keeping the headband on my head was wearing a Bondiband first and putting the headband over it. The ears didn't move at all. :) (I got the headband tip from Leah of Sparkle Skirts. She uses a different running headband, but the concept worked the same.) I did a test run with the whole headband/ears setup before the race to make sure it would work for me...

Thanks for the tip. Now I just have to find someone who is going to Disney that maybe could pick up the head band for me. I definitely would want to try it out before running with it too.

I've run that path along the river before. We have stayed in the Grandstand section and it's about a mile on that path to the back of OKW, then of course the journey to the front.

It will only save me 8 points to move from SSR to OKW so I'll probably just stay at SSR, but it is something to think about.

Thanks.

In my previous position with my company I was in the Orlando area 1 - 2x a month. I would stay in the Marriott Village area and run to OKW... The nature trail is a nice place to go through on a sunny day.

So I did the half marathon last year and was so jealous of everyones Mickey medal that I have decided to sign up for the full marathon and am even considering trying the Goofy challenge. But I have question for all you experienced runners - How much difference will it make if I split my longer runs and do part in the morning and part in the evening? Or do I need to do the long runs all at one time? I usually run mid morning but then find myself at the rec center for my kids' activities in the evening and could get in an extra 45-65 minutes on the treadmill. I can't decide if the evening run would be helpful or if it would be unnecessary wear and tear on the body. TIA!

I doubt it would hurt you to do this some of the time, but I don't think you want to do it for ALL of your long runs. You won't get the same mental benefit out of it (i.e. how it will feel mentally running 2 10-milers vs. running a 20-miler)...plus, the marathon itself is going to be a continuous run, so it seems to me that it would be better to practice running continuously. :confused3 Unfortunately you may find that the only way for you to be able to do this is to wake up super early every Saturday to get your long runs in and still have time for, you know...life. :rolleyes1

I'm sure someone else can answer this better than I can...personally, I wouldn't do it, but if that's all that works with your schedule, then you gotta do what you gotta do. :thumbsup2

And hey, congrats on signing up for the marathon! You'll love it. :goodvibes

Paying $300 for the race is reason enough to make sure I don't back out. Now I have paid $200 for the race retreat. I definitely can't get back out or get injured now.

It's Goofy all the way!

Hi everyone! :wave2: Brand new to DISboards, and brand new to this thread! I have not been able to catch up on all 52 pages, please forgive me ;)

I ran the Wine and Dine half in October and immediately fell in love with runDisney - so I am dragging my runnin' peeps to WDW for Goofy 2013! Resort and flights are booked - so excited!! :hyper:

ETA did I say 52 pages? I meant 64!

Actually you did really well. Splitting the long runs ON OCCASION is ok; but it should be a once or twice exception rather than the norm. If one does split the long run, they should over distance the effort.

Here are the reasons for not splitting the run...

1) the mental side of a marathon is 'subjectively' 4 times more taxing than a half. One needs the experience of making their longer runs and understanding the mental games required to make it through to the end.

2) By making long runs we are teaching the body how to prefer fats over easily burned sugars as its primary food source. It takes a period of time on run before the metabolic system creates these adaptations. A couple of two hour runs may not allow this to happen

3) The body actually gains strength after the workout. your second run will occur during rest and recovery; exactly when the body is not needing to run.

Hope this helps.

Am I crazy.... or Goofy ;)

I have never done a full but I am thinking of doing the Goofy this year.

I did the WDW half 2012, another half locally in 2011, signed up for a half in October.

Anyone out there complete the Goofy before they have ever ran a full?

While as a coach I would say that it is not advisable, I also know that maybe 20% of all first time Goofy's are also running the marathon for the first time. The largest negative is that you are diluting your first marathon experience with the half on the day before. I know for me personally, I will never forget my first mary. But is digress. Make sure you find a solid marathon plan and add 2-3 back to back runs in the middle stages of the training. Run both races at training pace and you should do fine.

I am one of the Goofy, actually Dopey, people who did the 5K, 1/2M then Full M with under 1 year of training but there is a caveat....I walked the 5K(second ever) and 1/2M(second ever) with DW and then walked the Full M(first ever) but at a faster pace. I know my walking full at 4:56:+ is no where near you runners but at 60 years old and bad knees I was still able to complete the Full and did have some HAPPY tears when crossing the finish even if I did look like death warmed over.

Depending on training intensity and desired finishing time in the 2 races I would imagine you will do fine as long a your goals are not overly ambitious.

Go Goofy and ENJOY!

Congrats on signing up for the marathon! I agree with what others have said but am adding my 2cents anyway. I think it's best not to split up the long run. Then it's not actually a long run, it's just two shorter runs... which in my opinion is totally different (physically and mentally!). I believe the long run is not just a matter getting the miles in, it's a matter of training for the race and getting used to what you'll be doing on race day.

And ... I admit, I signed up because I really want that Mickey medal too! It's very motivating! :sunny:

Actually you did really well... [snip]

Why thank you! :woohoo:

I have a random long run question for you, seeing as you are a coach...why are runners advised to do long runs at 1-2 min/mile slower than goal race pace, as opposed to trying to do them as close to goal race pace as possible? Is it a strategy that is less likely to lead to injury and forces you to be on your feet longer, or is there more to it than that?

Thanks so much!! :wave2:
