How early do you guys start marathon training? I'm probably going to end up doing Hal Higdon's novice supreme plan (30 weeks) but should I build in extra weeks? As it stands I'd be starting in mid June, but should I start sooner and build in extra weeks just in case? I have the wine and dine in Nov., too, how do people factor that kind of thing in? The goal is to cross the finish line alive and get an anniversary medal.

I'm a Hal Higdon trainer too. He says that before the official program starts, you should be comfortably running 3 miles. So figure out how long it takes you to reach that point and then start from there! As far as the Wine and Dine, well I just figure that as a really long run.

Has anyone ever gotten a running costume? I have heard that they make them, just owndering where to get them! I was going to try and make my own, but if I can just buy one, that is even better! I am thinking Tink :)

Tanya, so you're going to do this plan:

and start in mid to late June? And will you throw some back to backs in for Goofy training? I can't remember what we talked about already... :)

Actually, I follow the Novice 1
http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51137/Marathon-Novice-1-Training-Program
because I like the sorta long runs midweek. I think that helps more overall than necessarily the super long runs on the weekend. I'm gonna do 1 back to back.... maybe 9 one day and then 18 the next. I don't see the need to torture myself any more than required! :faint:

I have a local Half on Sept. 1, so I'm starting that training mid-June, and will just keep on runnin'!!

Oh ok, gotcha. So that plan will start in September? What will you do from now until then?

We are flying in on Thursday night and flying home on Monday night. I am hoping to be able to work all day on Thursday, which means the flight will have to depart after around 6. Would love to share transpo if we are leaving the same day!!

I am planning on leaving on Thursday too. I'm just not sure if I'll do morning or evening. I'm planning on coming back Monday night too. Let me know if you find good fares and I'll let you know what I find.

Re: training… I believe 99% of plans will start September 5th. You don’t want to be doing marathon specific training for any longer than 18 weeks. You can base build before that, of course.

I have every intention of wearing one! I made one for an upcoming half (Sailor Moon!) and randomly (started a thread) on costumes to see what other people have done because to be honest that's the part I get most excited about.
I think you can just buy one of the tinkerbell skirts the Disney store sells, get a green shirt to match, and some fairy wings (like these).

Yeah, the three miles isn't a problem. I'm just thinking worse case scenario if something goes wrong one week I can have a "do over" if that makes sense?

Colleen, I will keep you posted if I find any good flights!

Thanks for the links about costumes, MightyDuck, I was looking at a lime green Sparkle Skirt, and I have a lime green running shirt. I will have to see what is out there and decide! can't wait!

Starting I think June 10 will be my Half Marathon training. But I've done that a handful of times now, so I'm not so consistent on that. My Half here in Wisconsin is on Sept. 1st. Feel free to come for a visit and a nice little jaunt through Lake Country, if you want.... I'm just sayin'..... we have room for visitors!! ;)

Call me superstitious (cough *hard boiled eggs* cough), but when I ran the full in 2011, I had just done the Disneyland Half September 2010, just 4 months prior. It worked out great! So I'm basically doing the same thing. Half training during the summer, and then Full training starting early September.

I'm seriously hoping charging for carry ons doesn't catch on--I'll never be able to afford to fly anywhere.
They have a direct one in June that was under $200 from PHL to MCO, we always fly from Newark since my sister comes from the city so it's easier for her to use NJ transit. I've only taken US Air in and out of Minneapolis/St. Paul (now there's a great airport) direct to Philly, but with prices on Jet Blue being so high I'm seriously considering them for the Orlando trips.

One comment on JetBlue - since that's our preferred airline (traveling with 3 young kids the DirecTV is awesome!). I follow the JetBlue schedule very closely and book my flights the same day that they release the new schedule. We live in NY (Westchester County) so White Plains Airport is our preferred departure point although LaGuardia is almost as close. I can usually get air fare to Orlando for around $200 per person, even during Spring Break.

Amanda, do you know when they will release fares past Jan 6? We fly out of Newark, and about $200 per person is what we usually get too.

regarding the Hal Higdon plans: I am starting the week of June 3 with HH Novice 2 plan, as I am running my first full Oct 7. Then taking 2 weeks off and jumping right back into Novice 2 until the Goofy. It gives me back to back long days, plus 5 days a week of running, which lets me get away with skipping a midweek run once in a while without feeling guilty:rolleyes1

I don't mind the continuous training, having done halfs in a similar fashion (only a few months apart). But its not for everyone.

I usually get an email from JetBlue a few days before they release new dates. I'll post here when I get the email! :thumbsup2
