Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread

I know the feeling-- I've been trying to get someone to run it with me but to no avail, but all those Negative Nellies and Debbie Downers can just bite me. My cousin did one marathon and all she did was lecture me on how I run too slow to do a marathon, I'm not an athlete like she was, blah blah blah.

As for not winning, I'm sure many of you will understand what I mean when I write that my old "skinny" jeans are now big enough on me to be my new "fat" jeans, all because I wanted a medal with a mouse on it and started running for it. If that alone doesn't go in life's win column, this glass-half-empty girl doesn't know what does.

The jeans are awesome!!! I really wanted the Everest medal and just picturing it got me through the race. I wanted to die, but I did it. Now I want that Mickey medal. They are kind of addicting!

I am still on the fence about signing up for the full:confused3 A part of me really wants too, but it seems impossible right now. I've done 3 half's, but I'm very slow. If I do it, I'll be running by myself. I'm torn and scared to sign up:confused:

Jennifer

Jennifer I'm scared too. I am the type who sets themselves up for failure. I feel like if I go and don't finish it would be such a waste of time on my part and my families part. But I know if I don't try that's a complete failure so I don't know.
You've done 3 1/2s! You can do the marathon! I've done one 5K, I don't have as much confidence in myself.

Oh don't be scared. I'm slow and have only done one half at this point. :rotfl2: I also have asthma and am on a medicine to make my heart beat faster (bradycardia) so when I run I unfortunately end up anaerobic. So if I can do it, you can do it. :) And I haven't done it...just signed up. Oh and I'm running alone (or with the thousand friends I meet along the way...)

Hey! If I sign up you will not be alone! We will do it together!

Maybe we need a "first time full at the Disney" thread? It would be good for all of us who sign up to stick together and support one another from now until race day.

that sound's like a good idea!!

It is natural but don't be scared. I ran my first Half this January at WDW and I was SO nervous! But then the fireworks went off, the race started, and the fun began! Not to mention the fact that I spent the pre-race time with WISH friends who were happy and smiling and encouraging! And when I finished, they were there to congratulate me along with my DW. It was the best feeling ever.

As I think back to my doubts and fears about the Half, I realize that you just have to trust your training and hang around people, who are positive and encouraging. If I can do my first HM at age 51 and having only started running last April, I am confident that you will do fine, and have a blast!

I run my first Full this October in Chicago, followed by the Goofy in 2013. I admit that 26.2 seems intimidating right now. But I know my training will get me there, and I will channel any fears into motivation for my training runs. Trust in the training and trust in your desire to finish.

When you cross that Finish Line in 2013, thousands will be cheering you on, including all your WISH friends!

Corrals ?: How do they determine corral if you've never done the full and only submit times from half(s)? I'm reading some horror stories about congestion.

There are formulas that relate times from vaious distances. There is one on runners world's website. You can put in a half time and it projects a full time. I have actually found it to be pretty accurate for me. Of course you need to consider other factors (heat, hills, etc). Anyway, my guess is that they use something like that.

Goofy is 52% full. Get in if you're getting in!

Eek! Thanks for posting this. I need to start bugging my brother to register! :scared1:

I've been trying to figure this out for awhile. Honestly - and this is pure speculation on my part - I think just the act of submitting a time will move you ahead of everyone who didn't, so that's got to be good for a few corrals. :confused3 Again, that's just be speculating. And yes, there is congestion, but it's not too bad after the first couple miles or so.

There are formulas to extrapolate finish times at various distances based upon a finish time provided for a specific distance. Disney probably has their own but the set I prefer for that is:

That is AWESOME. Win!!! An inspirational post.

Wow. Goofy always seems to fill fast! Does anyone know what the registration cap is for the Goofy (or for any of the marathon weekend races, for that matter)?

Last I heard Goofy is approx 7500.

Overall I think these were the numbers I remember seeing around last year:

Goofy 7500
Donald: 28000
Mickey: 20000
Relay: 3000-5000

Thanks!:thumbsup2 The last race I did, they only asked for a projected finish and people definitely lied (started in my corral and were walking after mile 2). It was kind of a big pain in the butt to have to dodge people like crazy. Hopefully Mickey will make sure that goes as well as possible.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement, I went ahead and registered for the Marathon and splurged and registered for the retreat too. Still very nervous, but trying to figure out a good training plan. I used Galloway for the 1/2 haven't decided if I'll use it for the full. What plans are you guys looking at?

Jennifer

I plan to register for the Full but have to wait till my credit card stops crying.. As for training plans I started using Active Trainer (as their plans are free to Cast Members) and while I'm waiting for the 1/2 and the Full plans to start I like the format and find it really easy to use and stick with (currently just doing a basic fitness/weight loss one until the 1/2 one starts first of June)

Wow, Goofy over 50% already! That seems quick!

Glad I got me and dh signed up for it.

I wish I could train well enough to hit the time that this calculator says my full should be at. My PR is 45 minutes slower than what I'm quoted on this calculator! At least my 5k PR is faster than what the calculator says I should run

Is your dh fit? I hate to say it but I think the dh's can have a hard time watching their wife do something so amazing if they've let go of their fitness themselves. I've seen this with several couples.

A first timers thread would be great!

DH used to go to the gym pretty regularly till he switched jobs in December and now the gym is totally out of his way. He's also gain a good amount of weight since he started this job (he was already overweight to begin with). He's just been a really party pooper lately. The job he took is a lot more than I think he thought it would be as far as work load and hours, but that's what happens when you step into management and are salaried, not hourly. So he's been stressed with work. I've been stressed with dealing with everything at home and the kids. The one night he was actually home for dinner last week, I brought up that one of the kids took money out of my dresser. He got all ticked that I brought it up at dinner, but that is the only time we are all together to address something, that I thought was a big deal, and get to the bottom of it. Needless to say we had it out. Both of us stressed out at the same time is not a good thing. Sorry for the vent. He would probably feel better if he did work out just to burn off some steam. He is supposed to do a 5K in May that is sponsored by the hospital he works for and he doesn't run at all. I thought we could do it together, but I guess I will just have to smoke his behind and he can eat my dust!

Noticed they're offering necklaces this year. Any idea what they might look like?

If they are anything like the ones they had this year for the Princess Half Marathon, sadly they are not worth it. Plus they also had them for sale at the Expo. I preordered one when I registered cuz I thought it being Disney I thought I would be a lot cuter. My suggestion would be to wait till the expo.

Really? Did you put in your finish time for a previous race, pick the distance for that race, and then it gave you a Full time that was out of whack? That's strange.

When I did my first 5k last month it was a really small group of people and I heard a woman tell the man she was with, "I hope you like how my butt looks in these pants 'cause that's all you're seeing til the finish, sweetheart."

I haven't decided yet since I have my first half in May and the Wine and Dine in Nov. so I guess I'll see what's worked thus far in a month but the Galloway goal of "finishing upright" sounds quite appealing and moderately realistic. I joked with a friend that for the first 1/2, I "don't even need to finish upright, dragging myself across the line is just fine." What were your thoughts on the plan for the 1/2?

As for family cheering you on, I have a 5k on Sunday and while my mother was completely disinterested about the whole thing and had no intention of showing up, she became quite excited when I said, "If you come, I'll take you to the diner for breakfast afterwards..." So they can be bought, it's just a matter of finding the price.

Oh, you'll be dodging plenty of people in the full at Disney too. There will be people in every corral who will be walking almost immediately as part of their race strategy and training program. There will be people in every corral who want to negative split the race and start out much slower than their ultimate pace will be. It's a crowded course and takes some time to for people to spread out enough to the point where you're not bobbing and weaving on a regular basis.
