I can't do the marathon!!! :sad1::sad1::sad1: Dh's company's Annual General Meeting starts on the day of the marathon and he absolutely can't miss it. I have kids who can't be left alone for 7 hours while I do it. They're older but not old enough that I'd leave them alone for 7 hours in a sea of people at WDW. My mom could come but she's in her 70s and I don't think would do well navigating those kinds of crowds. Plus, we would have driven down. Dh would have done the driving while I slept. I don't want to drive 15 hours then try to run a marathon. It just won't work. Sooooooooo disappointed!!!!

Is there a gf or sibling who could drive down with you? Maybe make a girl's weekend of it with the kids?

We just moved her a year ago. I have friends but not close enough to ask that. My family lives accross the continent.

Hmm, not sure about the transportation but you've got a lot of us around here. There's even dedicate WiSHer cheering sections. I'd hate for you to miss out on running, so maybe hold off on ruling it out. Someone might have a thought here on how to make it work, and maybe one thought is that your kids could be mini-WiSH cheerers? :confused3

I'm sure others will come up with even better ideas since I know the above isn't ideal in a lot of ways.

I'm just catching up after a busy couple of weeks and wanted to weigh in on the long run discussion. After my first marathon last fall I am a big believer in the Galloway plan. I signed up and trained with a Galloway group because I knew making the jump from half marathons to the full would require more structured training.

Our training schedule did have us do 26 miles 3 weeks before the marathon date. I really didn't want to do it - I wanted to do the actual distance for the first time on race day, not earlier! But I had the opportunity to talk with Jeff himself and because I was worried about making the time cutoff for my race (6:30 in hilly Atlanta) he said it would really help me to get my legs used to going for that long. So I did that training run, but ended up not finishing. I jumped in the roving support vehicle about mile 24.5 because my feet and ankles were really hurting. As soon as I took my shoes off the pain went away, so I was able to figure out that it was a width issue with the swelling that occurred with the higher mileage. It hadn't bothered me as much on the 20 or 23 mile runs, but on the 26 miler it was so bad I was afraid I'd hurt something if I continued then I wouldn't be able to do the race. I went right to the store (while my feet were still swollen!) and got some shoes that felt much better and wore them on a couple of shorter runs before the marathon. Race day I finished with no pain at all.

If I hadn't done that last long run I would not have known my shoes were an issue until the race itself. I felt bad enough not finishing the training run (especially when I got to the finish and found out they had medals for finishers), but I would have really kicked myself if I hadn't finished the marathon.

The long runs helped me mentally too. My "wall" came at about mile 16 on the 20 miler and I was so thankful to have an experienced marathoner stay with me and get me through that run, but then I was worn out the rest of the day. I realized I hadn't had as many calories as usual that day, so after that I was more diligent about making sure I had some gu and gatorade about every hour. I had a great 23 mile run 3 weeks later with no issues and felt great all day afterward. That gave me the mental confidence I needed.

Faster runners probably don't have the same things to work through since they aren't out there as long, but for me the rehearsals definitely helped!

Just curious, how much larger of a shoe did you end up getting?

Jennifer

I originally started with 1/2 size up, but I ended up with a lot of blisters and it felt like my feet were on fire. I went back to the running store and they said I needed a full size larger. That fixed that problem, but I still get this weird pain in the ball of my feet. I'm still working on that issue

When I was fitted for my shoes, the salesman, also a runner, told me to get 9s, and I am an 8-8.5

I work for a running shoe company and we advise going up 1/2 to 1 size from what you wear in "standard" shoes. Because your feet swell when you run (especially on loooooong runs!), you need extra room in the toe box. You should be able to fit the width of your thumb between your toes and the end of your shoe. I used to think that seemed crazy -- but you use the lacing to actually "fit" the shoe to your feet.

Still, there's no substitute to being fitted in a good running store -- they can watch you walk or run, analyze your gait, and make sure you have the best shoe for you.

Kim, where do you go for your running shoes? I'm gonna need a new pair soon.

Colleen, I went to Miles Ahead in Sea Girt, they used to be on the Circle by the outlets, but they moved I believe. I just got a new pair from Amazon, bought the same shoe in the same size so I wouldn't have to drive out there, lol. ...and...Amazon had them in pink, and Miles Ahead only carried blue, lol. It's all about the pink!!!
Have you decided if you are going for the marathon yet? Morgan and I would love to hang out if you decide to go! :flower3:

Miles Ahead is where I got my last pair too. They seem to be the go to running store around here. They moved a few weeks ago up 35 by the bowling alley. DH got a pair of running shoes there, not to run in, but to wear to work. I think I'm gonna do the marathon. I just haven't signed up yet. I will before the price goes up. I would love to hang out with you guys. I am planning on going without DH and the kids. Too expensive for all of us and DH is Disneyed out. Like there could be such a thing.:confused3 I'm planning on the princess with a friend and a friend of hers.

So glad you will be going, too! We are leaving my hubby and son home for the same reason! It is just too expensive and we already have a family vacation planned for this summer, and will likely be going somewhere together next summer. My daughter and I are calling it the Girls' Weekend

Sounds like a great plan. My mom will probably come up for the marathon. They go down to Florida for the winter. I would love to bring DD and make it a girls weekend too, but with her attitude lately, she really doesn't deserve it. :rolleyes1

My mother might be as well, if she is visiting my sis in Florida, she said she would come by. I hear you on the DD thing, mine alternately annoys/helps me. She can be such a teenager sometimes! :(

My DD is only 10. She may have to be locked away once she is a full fledged teenager. :scared1:

Had the training run from hell this run. The course was hilly and wouldn't have been bad if the weather hadn't made it miserable. It was unusually cold today (40 degrees!!!! And no I am not joking) combined with 40 mile an hour wind gusts in my face coming back on a down and out course made for an absolute miserable 3 miles of a six mile run. I loved the fact that this weeks run wasn't too far from my house hated the Golden windstorm.

Thanks for thinking of me and ways to help :) One of my friends who runs with Team in Training is doing it for sure. Dh and I talked and we think maybe, if one of our parents could come and stay here for a few days, I could go alone. Because my friend (and maybe her dh and kids) will be there, I wouldn't really be alone. Dh has enough Delta miles for me to fly for free already so it wouldn't cost my family too much. I'm kind of determined to do this. I've decided, for now, to plan on doing it & hope all the logisicts work out, even if it means doing it solo.

:woohoo: Now I know who will keep me sane in Dec.! So glad you are coming to marathon weekend, my Canadian corral buddy!
