Hello I have heard good things about these boards from my daughter regl8ter18 so I decided to join the group. I am going to be running the goofy challange in january. This will be my first one. I have only been running for a year now thanks to my daughter who talked me into it. I have done a few half marathons and decided to take the plunge and do both the half and the full.

DON

Welcome! We have run several of the same races in the Chicago area but have not had the pleasure of meeting yet. Your daughter was cheering at the Fox Valley race I ran this past Sunday and it was such a great boost! :)

I am running the 5K as well as the Goofy Challenge in 2013. So we will be on the same training journey. I think it is awesome that you and your daughter can share the experience of running, especially at Disney.

Hope to meet you in the near future and/or in January!

It has now been one month since my last run, stress fracture . Nothing is as motivating or makes you realize how much you love to run as an injury. Only 8 days until my next X-ray. I sure hope my dr gives me the ok to continue training for the WDM in January.

Kim, I think I may be adopting your startegy for the full. After 15 I was pooped! Definitely will have to do some walking in the second half of the full. I did a four miler today and my legs just felt heavy and tired. Don't know if it's because now I am running in the morning (not crazy early, just after getting the kids on the bus, come home let the dog out, eat breakfast, yattta yatta). My early evening runs feel so much better. Stupid soccer! By the time soccer is over it will be dark at 5:00. I need a tractor beam that will maintain the sun shining to about 8:00 come November. :rotfl2:

What are you eating for breakfast? Could that be slowing you down? I think after being up and around all day, your muscles are more warmed up so that might have something to do with it too. Check your warm-ups and stretching.

I know how you feel about the evening runs. Though I love this time of year, my kids take up all of the sunlight hours I have after work. Between cooking dinner, soccer, drama and whatever else, it's crazy. Now 1/2 my Saturday is shot because I teach religion and then do endurance training for DD's soccer team. I need a life of my own.

Sent from my iPad using DISBoards. Please excuse the typos.

Prayers coming your way; I know that :goodvibesis soooo frustrating!!!

You can do this!!! You have plenty of time to train; 15 is a good place to be right now and you are going to feel whipped no doubt. I can remember training for my first full and I would run after the kids went school and when they would get home they would say, "mom what did you do today?" Uhhh....I ran and took a nap. LOL :rotfl: Keep it up!

Hi Colleen
Something that may help is to drink a protean shake within 15 min after your long run. It well to repair the mussels you broke down and lead to a quicker recovery. Look for one that also has carbs in it. Don't worry about calories as you just ran 15 miles and your muscles are craving some TLC.

Ugh! I'm finding it so hard to get motivated! I'm a new runner/walker, and still haven't found the 'love' of it. We have been so crazy busy lately, I'm just not making training a priority, and this 1/2 is gonna sneak up on me!! Doing 3 miles, one day a week just isn't gonna cut it.
Sigh...
Ok, whine over! Thanks for listening. :)

I understand the motivation issue. Here are some of the things I use as motivation:

1) these messages boards (shameless plug)
2) YouTube videos of past Disney events
3) pictures of race medals and maps of the courses.
4) learning to love/look forward to long run.

That last one can be hard especially when you are in the middle of it. Knowing race courses I try to visualize where I am at. Running through the shopping center on Sunday's long run I imagined entering Magic Kingdom...similar type of road conditions.

Remember a lot of this is mental. Try to find that mental state...and it ain't easy.

My goto is low fat chocolate milk. So yummy and if you believe the marketing it is the perfect ratio of protein, fat, and carbs.

If not, makes me feel better. ;)

I'm with you on that. I get the little pony-sized ones cuz they are one cup and easy to put in a gear bag. :)

Well I did it. 20 miles run today. Time was unimpressive at 3:58, but I RAN 20 MILES-ALL AT ONE TIME. :cool1::cool1: The first 15 were right on target time wise, the last 5 were :crazy2:. Walked more, felt like my right leg wanted to cramp up, but didn't. Water/GU/Cytomax all worked out well, I think I have the fueling bit down. Now its taper time-first marathon is 3 weeks from today!
Congrats on your 20 miles!

I really, really hope the people posting 18 and 20 milers today are doing a full before Disney. LOL.
:lmao: Yes, I'm pretty sure they all are.

I agree! I love my 8pm training runs. Wish I could keep the daylight longer!

Great tips! I had kind of a miserable time on my long runs in training for last year's Wine and Dine. So when I decided to train for the full marathon, I was determined to enjoy the long runs. It's been awesome to find enjoyment in my training again. I will have to try your idea of visualizing cool places to run, including WDW!

Hi Everyone! This is my second marathon but my first Disney race. I'm super excited and also very nervous. It has been about 6 years since my first marathon and I'm trying to be really good about my training so that I don't completely die off at mile 20 like I did the first time. I've been running since I was 16 so I'm not a newbie, but I still have anxieties about those long runs. Right now I'm up to a half marathon on my long run and it's going pretty good. I think it would be going a ton better though if my plantar fascitis wasn't flared up in my left foot :crazy2:. I've been stretching my calves, icing it, and taking anti inflammatories but it's still bugging me. Does anyone have any other suggestions??

Absolutely! Ok; I see a doctor who is a little bit non-traditional but I have to say he is amazing! He has a web site called sock-doc.com. He has completed I think maybe 10-15 ironman competitions so he has experience with training. He is a applied kinesiologist and will show you in a video how to treat your plantar fascitis in the shin (where he says it stems from); not so much in the foot (which is traditionally treated the most. He has fixed my knee and my plantar fascitis. I hope this helps. They call him the sock doc because he wears socks in the office now! He runs in minimal shoes and is barefoot most of the time now. It may sound hokey but I have to say the proof is in the pudding. You wouldn't believe all the health issues he has helped my family conquer...but that's another thread! Let me know how it goes.

One of the posters asked a question earlier about plantar fascitis and I gave a link to my doctor's website. I wish I had thought of this earlier for some of the other questions that have been asked in regards to training, injury, nutrition, etc... If you are interested in finding out information about these areas I suggest giving his website a try. It is sock-doc.com. His name is Dr. Stephen Gangemi and he has completed (I stand corrected earlier) 20 Ironmen competitions and was an All-American Triathlete in 1996 and 2004. They call him sock-doc because he wears socks/ no shoes when treating patients! I am not saying that he will work for everyone but he took 45 minutes off my running time from the Chicago marathon to the Marine Corp and I'm a stay at home mom not an elite athlete. He also shows videos on how to treat injuries. I believe some are now on utube. I hope this benefits somebody. He is a neat guy! ;)

I only had a bowl of cereal, Special K. I think I need more in the morning. When I go in the evening, at least I had been eating all day.

Thanks for the encouragement. I definitely needed a nap after that run! Snuck in a few zzz.

Thanks, I've been having chocolate milk for the same effect. Do the protien shakes work better? Is any one better than another?

A week ago today a dear friend of mine lost her husband in the attack on the US Embassy in Libya. He left behind my friend and their two children. I have been trying to figure out how I can help them and then it came to me during my run on Sunday... I can use the Goofy as a fundraiser for the family.

I am in the process of having it become a donation to his family through the State Department for tax receipts, etc., but was wondering if I need to "ask permission" from Disney.

Thanks for any info...

What a horrible tragedy, but what a wonderful way to help the family. I'm not sure about asking Disney but found this on runDisney.com

I think protein shakes have added protein and some other stuff to help repair muscles so they can benefit you more, but I use regular chocolate milk when DH has used up all the Muscle Milk.

Speaking of nutrition....

What's everyone eating the night before and how late are you eating?

I'm thinking of going to Kona Cafe for the noodles with chicken or shrimp and maybe some sushi around 6.
