Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

Grrr...I am finally get the IT band stuff settled down but now when I run the same leg is getting sore in the shin. I slightly overpronate on the left and my right is neutral. Is this just my shin getting used to the IT band working? I may be walking 26.2 after all...

Has anyone used the Futuro Sport Adjustable Knee Stabilizer?
http://www.futuro-usa.com/wps/porta...al/Products/Product-Catalog/?N=5148274&rt=rud

I have had problems with lateral knee pain due to weak hips and have gone through 2 months of PT. I start off fine during a half but later on my knees hurt so bad I am reduced to walking. I have tried KT tape but have issues with it staying on and have tried the IT Band strap but that doesn't seem to help and they fall off. I know it's bad form to wear something during race day that you didn't practice with but I am going to be hurting regardless. I am less concerned with how long it takes me to finish and more concerned with how my legs feel the next couple of days at the parks.

Does anyone have any experience with braces like this? Will this be okay to run in?

Just curious as to how fast you are running and then how fast you are walking. I have had knee issues that prevent me from running and have tried a number of stabilizers with the Cho-Pat being what I am using now. They are more comfortable than the others and I actually feel them aiding in the forward motion of stride recovery. They might not give you all the support you may need but I thought I would just mention them.

I went out this morning with very tired legs and walked a very short 4.25 mile distance in a 10:01mpm pace. Not great but without the Cho-Pats my knees would have collapsed.

When I am at the top of my game I run a 9:30 or 10 min mile. However my average over the half ends up being closer to 12 with all the walking. I was considering doing the Galloway 2 min run: 1 min walk but was trying to find a way to better stabilize my knees. Last time I used the KT tape and it was flapping in the wind by mile 5.

I have not run in that brand but the concept is what you may be looking for. First, I would ask the PT for their recommendation as they may point you in a direction different that I will.

For running, I would look for a design similar to this 1) an open knee to prevent pushing the patella into the joint for 4-7 hours. 2) I would also look for one that has a cut out behind the knee to prevent material bunching up and rubbing the area raw. 3) While optional, I like the Velcro strapping as a regular sleeve will always feel like is falling down.

I like DonJoy products as I know the last and have a heavy ortho review.

http://www.betterbraces.com/donjoy-reaction-knee-brace - This may be heavy for a first run at 26 miles, but I used it through my injury last summer.

http://www.betterbraces.com/donjoy-performer-knee-support - This is a minimal design – I would feel like I needed to pull up all the time… Though a minimal investment and really a no-harm design. (I would try this style if you can find…)

I would look for as minimal a brace as you can find. I would run on Friday or your first morning in WDW to make sure you have a feel for it. It will not feel natural. Lube the area around the patella as this will start to abrade after some time on the road.

Good Luck

More than likely compensation issue more than anything else. Take an anti-inflammatory and ice. If your shoes are really old, you may want to use a back up pair. It is kind of late to recommend a new pair, but that may be better than shin splints.

I Do want to ADD - CW-x 3/4 tights may be a better solution all around since you have the hip issue. They will help with the hip girdle, IT and knee to some degree.

Did you put the KT tape on yourself or have them do it at the expo? I've heard results can vary widely and am planning on having them tape my knee at the expo, so here's hoping it sticks!

My physical therapist showed me how to use it I just could never get the ends to stick down long enough.

I've always wondered about this...where do people change when they bring a change of clothes? I'm with PP, I have never done bag check for any race. I use the snacks and water they pass out, take a quick picture and go back to a nice hot shower and fresh clothes. I think the worse part after the princess was getting off the bus at the resort. Ouch. One of the maintenance people was ribbing us asking if we had just done the "marathon" (had to tell him it was a half). When we said yes, he said he could always tell who had done the "marathon." "You always looks so fresh and energized before the race and then you're all crawling when you get back." That was a long walk back to our room.

I'm a guy, I don't need to go anywhere. For longer races like this, I wear a compression type short, with nothing baggy on top of it, so after the race my full compression tights or calf sleeves go on normally, then I'll either slide some type of track pants or shorts on top of that and just change my shirt right there in the parking lo, BUT they will have port-o-pottys to change your tops for the ladies.

VISORS: I have a Headsweats visor that I've been wearing on every run since earlier last year. I love it! I wear it over my ear warmer in the cold weather. I got it at runningwarehouse (used WISHRACED code for 15% off). I have the white Headsweats Supervisor: http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage-HSSV.html#

Really Liz? 4:45AM? That will be enough time? I am a punctual person. :)

Well I will plan on meeting up with the Riverside folks maybe by 4:20AM? THen we can all traverse over to OKW intersection to meet you and the others for Saturdays Half.

It will be enough time for me. You may want more. ;) The spot we are meeting at is very close to the corrals. And I don't want to get into my corral before about 5am. It's up to you! :)

Couple questions:
1.) I just got my new shoes for Christmas, but due to snow and ice outside and not having access to a treadmill, I took them out for a run the first time today. I did 8 miles in them today, and am going to do a couple shorter runs in them before leaving on Friday. They are the same brand and design I've always worn, although the new design changed slightly. Since I did 8 today in them without problem, is it safe to assume that 13 would be fine as well. I'm going to wear my old shoes for the marathon, but I only have the one other pair that isn't extremely high in miles. Should I bring another older pair for the half, or bring the new shoes?

2.) If my parents want to cheer inside MK on Sunday, what time should they get there? We're at BLT, so they don't have to mess with transportation.

3.) this is a general disney question. When buying the official merchandise, can you get the disney visa discount only if you use the actual Visa card, or can I use my visa rewards gift card? Last year the lady who checked me out said I had to use my Visa card, but I think she might have been wrong. I have a bunch of rewards to use, but would also like to save the 15%...

Not sure I fully understand the question, but I would use the newest shoes available that were broken in. Each brand is different. I ran Boston one year with a pair of flats that I bought at the expo and ran only two miles in. No issues at all. My current marathon shoes take about 25 miles to break in nicely. Newer shoes are almost always better than older ones as long as they are broken in just a bit.

1. I would wear the newest shoes myself. Two weeks is plenty of time to find out if they are wonky or going to work and 8 miles may as well be 13. You should be fine.

2. I know it gets very crowded very early, I would guess that they would do best to get up and head over early to get a good spot.

3. The rewards card is just a gift card, it is not linked to any perks because it is already free money. Enjoy!

Okay thanks, maybe I will just plan on doing that. I am planning on an extended retirement from running after this half, just need something to get me through. I am a little worried about it. I am just going to take my time and not pressure myself and walk as much as I need.

I thought I saw it somewhere in this thread but can't find it now...does anyone know the corral start times? I am trying to plan out what time I will be at different viewpoints for my family but needed my start time for calculations.

2) They really need to be across the course (if walking ) by 0600 so they are not held up by Security. Once the course starts to fill they will not allow crossing at the light. As info, MK opens at 0530 for the spectators.

A wave starts at 0535. B 7 minutes later (0542), etc
