Official Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2012 thread

I feel you. I think it is sad that I think an 80* run is "cool weather".

How did the back to back races work for you? I am a little nervous about doing the Tink and Princess, but I am already committed. :rolleyes1

You know, I was a little concerned with the back to back and the plan my trainer had me on to do it...you would think I would know better than to doubt her by now because it always works out and I felt great! Right after the DL half, I got back into town, had a massage and did a 30-45 min workout on a stationary bike...then a 5 miler that weekend. The follwing week I did 3, 4 and 7 miles, then 4, 4 and 6 miles the week after and then week of the race was 3 and 4 miles then race day. For the DL I came in at 2:34...Wine and Dine was 2:48, but we stopped for lots of pics and one restroom break for the BF. I'm confident that had we not stopped for the pics I would have been right in line with my DL time...I felt great the entire race! So, don't fret!

If you haven't purchased flights for race weekend yet, check the fares today. They dropped significantly overnight for me...houston-orange county...on Continental and Southwest.

Fares from PDX look to be the same as before... we will likely have to bite the bullet and pay for Alaska's typical fare. We were thinking of driving but by the time you factor in the hotel, wear and tear on our winter tires and opportunity cost of 4 days on the road (2 each way) the hubby is thinking we should just fly.

Training was going great - we made it to an 8 mile run without too much trouble but then took two weeks off to go get married (woohoo!). We even brought our shoes and clothes with us but were so busy entertaining and touring that we did not use them even once. Now that we are back the weather has changed from not cooling off quick enough to being in the 50's and raining every day! What a difference a couple weeks make!

Does anyone have tips for runs in the rain? I can't even imagine having to get soaked 3 days a week and trying to dry my shoes out when it is chilly inside the house! I think the 30 min runs will be fine except for the shoes but what about running long days? Ugh! Tell me there are tips I just don't know yet!

Excited! We just booked our flight for Tinkerbell weekend...we're staying Friday-Tuesday. We also booked rooms at the Red Lion on a couple of recommendations, but we may switch to the Hilton if their rates get better. We've stayed there a couple of times for the DL half and really like it, but their rates are super duper high for Tinkerbell weekend compared to what we've booked it for the last 2 years. I guess I "officially" started training yesterday. I took a week off after the Wine & Dine half and now I'm just starting my same training schedule all over. It's nice to be back in the lower miles for a while! :woohoo:

Not to mention the weather driving at the end of Janaury.

I live in the soggy Pacific NW, too. I trained a lot on a TM and indoor running track. I really noticed a difference when I was at the Princess so I'm trying to tough it out and run outside as much as possible this time around. :umbrella:

Glad that you had a good time at the Wine & Dine! Thanks for the heads up on the airfares. :flower3:

Did you see any WISH folks at the W&D?

I did get to briefly meet one WISHer from the W&D thread...Regul8tr (or somthing close to that :)) is her DIS name...she recognized my outfit and tapped me on the shoulder to say hello towards the end of the race...very cool! I didn't notice any lime green WISH shirts this time though... I remember seeing some WISH spectators at the Princess though. I think there was a meet up the day before the W&D in DTD but my flight didn't arrive in time for me to make it. Hopefully one can be set up for Tinkerbell!

It was nice that you got to meet one WISHer! :cool2: I don't think the lime green shirts are out in full force at the W&D like at the January marathon week-end. Even at the Princess there were maybe a dozen of us or so in our shirts.

I'm hoping that we can do a meet for the Tinker Bell Half. I'm thinking the tables to the east of the La Brea Bakery at 4:00 pm with pictures at 4:30 pm on Saturday, January 28th, unless we decide to try for something inside. That is the traditional time for WISH meets so that people can get dinner or do something before trying to get some sleep. We have lots of time to decide for sure! :tink:

Booked my flight today! :woohoo: LAX was about $40 cheaper overall (shuttle included), but I'm coming in the 1st flight Friday and a late flight Monday so w/ the 405 traffic at those times, I figured SNA would just be easier and a lot less stressful. I'm still hoping flights will come down a little bit, but I know SNA is so weird about their pricing, I figured I might as well. Plus, I'm going to Portland in May for RnR so if they do go a little cheaper, I can just rebook and use the credits for that flight.

So I now officially done with everything but park tix for the race!!! But I'm waiting on the park hour release and how many rides may be down before I get those. If most of the rides are open I'll just get an Annual Pass, maybe Premier w/ Goofy in 2013, but I still have a ton of time to decide on that one!

Make sure you have plenty of glide in stock at home so no chaffing. Not fun! Along w/ the chaffing, don't wear overly clothes~ that'll just add to it. As for your shoes during your runs, not sure. I've seen weather proofing spray for shoes to protect them, but not sure if it would work w/ running shoes. But for after the runs, pull out the inside bed of the shoe so it can dry a little faster. I've also heard that stuffing newspaper into wet shoes will help dry them faster.

I totally forgot about the premier pass. That could be a good option for me since I plan on doing Tink, the Princess, and W&D.

Just wanted to let everyone know that information is finally up for the ChEAR squad, on the RunDisney Tinker Bell site. :cheer2:

Can anyone give me suggestion on gloves for running??

I just use cheap little mittens that I get at my local Shopko (a store at a level between Wal-Mart and Target) that are $2 for 2 pairs. Then I don't have to worry about losing them or leaving them by the side of the road in a race. I also have some Mizuno gloves I got from Amazon that are breathable running gloves, but honestly, I can't say they seem much better than the cheapos to me. Sometimes the little things that fold over your hand is as good as anything. It looks like Target may have some Champion gloves for running, too.

Thanks for letting us know about the ChEAR squad. I'll add a link to the first post. I've also added a link to the map there. If there is anything else that you would like added there just let me know. :tink:

When I was at Disney World this past August, I upgraded to the premier pass.
Since I ran the DL half on Labor Day weekend and will be running both the Tinkerbell and Princess ion 2012, it just make sense.
It's cool to have it!:cool1:
The only weird thing is that because I got it at DW, I have to show my ID along with it at DL because their photo systems are not synced together. Oh well.

That was my thinking too. I'm a for sure on the premium pass for DL w/ Tink and DL in Sept, I just need to figure out how many days I'll be in WDW in '13, but I'll just do what you did and upgrade. I'm hoping that I can use the Twilight ticket that you get for the 5K to apply to the pass, but I have to call them to see if they know. B/w that and the Disney Reward Dollars, I could put a decent chunk into the price to bring down the monthly payments.

Do you still get pin codes w/ the premier pass for the hotels? I would assume you did, but wasn't sure.

I do the premier pass because we usually do 10 days at WDW for the marathon and I already have a Premium AP for Disneyland. With the discounts, it really does save us money (like 30% rooms for 7 of the days of our trip this year).

I like the fact that I can keep my monthly payments on the Disneyland AP I just pay the upgrade here at the park before heading to WDW. No hastle or worries at all.

Really wish I was doing the Tink, but I may volunteer. I am doing my first Goofy and while I think it would be cool to get my Coast to Coast is January, not sure what type of shape I will be in to run that soon.

Good luck to everyone who is running! I'll either be at a water station or leading a group of my employee's in a Nike Run Club cheering station like we did for the DLand half two years ago.

Healthy and Happy training!

Thanks for the info! And the add-on while being able to keep the monthly payments on DL, I was wondering about that as well. That'll definitely help w/ WDW b/c if I remember correctly, the rooms aren't really discounted for the race.

Has anyone heard when they're releasing the course for the 5k? I asked in DL and they said in a couple of weeks, but nothing yet. I'm wondering if they're waiting until after the contest (which I'm going to win :rotfl2:) or to see how construction is going on DCA.

Hey everyone! Just went onto Southwest to check stuff out, and they are having a HUGE sale and rates are in effect for race weekend. If you distance is less than 450 miles, flights start at $35, under 1,000 are $65, 1,500 are $95 and over 1,500 miles are $125. A big plus is that Orange and LAX will probably be the same travel distance for most, so you can fly into the usually more expensive Orange for the LAX price! I just rebooked my flight from San Jose to Orange for $91 round trip. So if you're looking for flights and SWA is near you, you should check them out.

I wish they would have a sale to Orlando, or it took less miles to go to Orlando. Right now I plan on using dh's miles for the Tinker Bell since it takes less then Orlando and paying for the Orlando trip, but they keep having all these good sales to Ca and nothing for Orland yet :(

Hi; I'm new to the boards and new to running. My cousin and I (33 and 30 y/o no kids) signed up for the Neverland 5k. We are staying at the Grand California. Anyone else signed up for the 5k who is brand new to running?

Congrats to all signed up for the 1/2. My knees are killing me after 2 weeks of training with the "couch to 5k" app for iphone. More power to you!

Hi Daiisy---Congrats on signing up for the race. I'm sure you two will have a lot of fun!! Don't be surprise that you get hooked and maybe you two will sign up for the Tinker Bell 1/2 next year. It's all about the "finishers medal" :cool1:

I'm having some knee issues too. I am training hard and keep putting in the miles. So I ice, ice, ice.

Have you also checked out the Nike+ GPS app for the iphone? I love it and so far so good !!

Stopping in to say HI!
Anyone else on this thread running with Team Up! Autism Speaks?

I'm getting SO excited- exactly 3 months to go. :yay:

California here I come :cool1:
