I Loved it! Awesome, can't wait for the next 2 weeks. I always get so sad when it is the closing ceremony though....
For me it's when they douse the flame. I HATE that!!!

Anyone got a good link with air times of events.? Not the Olympic schedule...but the "Speed Skating will be on NBC on this day at 2pm (for example)" schedule.

go to msnbc.com Sports Winter Olympics, then

click on TVtimes, there's an entire schedule. I printed it out and highlighted the NBC times and what's on each day.
(They also have the CNBC, USA, and Universal HD times)

I LOVE the Olympics. It's really the only TV I watch faithfully, and I'll get a lot of quilting done the next few weeks, while I'm watching! :goodvibes

So how did everyone like the opening last night??

The music was a bit silly, IMO, but overall, it was a good show.

There were a number of really cool moments during the ceremonies: the human heart and skijumper (complete with "snow" at the end) and Shumacher's Ferrari turning donuts centerstage.... Sophia Loren and Pavarotti...I loved the dress Carla Bruni was wearing.

Overall, :thumbsup2

I truly enjoyed the human skijumper-that was truly awesome-I bet they were the same group that did the heart. When they showed close-ups at the end they were high-fiving each other. I bet those 2 scenes were the hardest to do. They showed Shawn White-snoboarder with his mouth hanging open-and then he looked at the person next to him and said, "did you see that". It was exactly what me and my husband said.

I fell asleep when the tourch got lit, I woke up when the last song was sung. Can anyone tell me how the tourch got lit and I remember thinking what a great song-but now I can't remember it this morning.

I missed the torch being lit also. I just couldn't keep my eyes open. Though I wouldn't say I was real impressed overall with the opening ceremony, I did think that the skier part was awesome! I fell asleep not long after the race car came out and did the doughnuts.

I did enjoy the disco music. Saw an interview with the girl that was carrying our flag and she said that they were playing the music in the tunnel. So maybe what we heard was coming out of the tunnel and not actually being played in the stadium. And did anyone catch the song that was on while we walked out? I've never heard it before but the singer kept saying "Freedom!". Thought it very appropriate. Wonder if it was meant to be that way?

Can't wait till 2:00!!

The torch lighting was very cool. The bearer touched their torch to a vertical semicircular bar and then the flame went in both directions around a large horizontal circle, came back again to the spot where she touched and then proceded to circle the auditorium in both directions, meeting at the huge torch and travelling up it to light the final flame.

Hard to describe, but very pretty!

I guess I did see it then on the news when it got highlighted.

Now can anyone tell me the awesome song that got sung to the athletes.

Pavarotti sang Nessun Dorma, an aria from Puccini's opera Turandot. Peter Gabriel also sang Lennon's Imagine, but I'm sure that's not the one you meant.

Me refuses to watch this crap. If they don't think we are good enough to hold a chair on the IOC, then it's not good enough for me to watch.

I'll watch SmackDown on my tivo and see worms all over the place! :stir:

Yes it was the song "Imagine" Thanks for telling me. I just thought what an appropriate song for the athletes to be living their dream.

Kwan won't rule out dropping off U.S. team

TORINO, Italy (AP) -- Michelle Kwan wouldn't rule out a withdrawal from the Olympics after cutting short her first practice Saturday because of stiffness in her groin.

Kwan said the long plane ride and marching in the Opening Ceremony caused enough problems for her to skip a short program run-through one day after arriving in Torino. She avoided answering several questions about whether she's worried about competing in her third Olympics.

Kwan put on a brave face but wouldn't rule out dropping off the team.
But asked directly if she might drop off the U.S. team, the five-time world champion said: "I really have to pay attention to how I am feeling these days. Dropping out, it's not something I want to do, but I have to listen to what my feelings are.''

Kwan said she will be at practice Sunday.

If she drops out before the Feb. 19 draw for the women's event, then Emily Hughes , the third-place finisher at the national championships and younger sister of 2002 Olympic champion Sarah Hughes, would take her place.

The nine-time U.S. champion quit the 40-minute workout session with about 15 minutes remaining and smiled at assistant team leader Taffy Holiday when she left the ice. When she skated, though, she looked serious, even dour, and missing three triple flips couldn't have helped her mood.

When she stood by the sideboards and chatted with team leader Roger Glenn, he could be seen holding her hand or arm several times as if comforting the nine-time U.S. champion.

The 25-year-old Kwan was given a medical bye onto the U.S. team after a groin injury sidelined her for the national championships a month ago. On Jan. 27, she passed a monitoring session conducted by U.S. Figure Skating, and this was her first public practice.

It was not pretty. Her first jump, a smooth triple toe loop, came 13 minutes into the workout. She then two-footed her first triple flip, and fell hard on her next attempt at the jump. Kwan also cut another try into a double flip.

At a press conference a few hours after practice, Kwan said she felt stiff and admitted that she was "concerned."
Most of the practice was spent on footwork and spins. At one point, Kwan did her footwork from her free skate and Glenn and U.S. judge Charlie Cyr seemed to be checking the levels of difficulty.

Kwan left the ice without her short program music being played. Her agent, Shep Goldberg, said he believed the music never arrived at the practice rink, but Kwan's early departure was unexpected -- and unlike her.

A silver medalist in 1998 and a bronze winner in 2002, Kwan is the rare skater who has stuck around for three Olympics.

Growing up with Disco, I gotta say I liked the music.

Well, I like my oldies as well, but I just thought it was kind of strange for the Olympics.

If you are a figure skating fan DO NOT miss tonights show... I won't give spoilers, but IF I did this right, highlighting the space below should give it away... (I was listening to play by plan on Eurosport.com)

Inoue/Baldwin landed the triple axel throw in the short!
