Official Thread For Upcoming Eastern Canadian Cruises

Only one of the taxi's I found searching using Canada411 had a web site, here it is.

This might be able to predict the tide for the day you are in Saint john to see if you don't arrive at the 20 minute slack tide periods.

And finally this is a nice link to tourism in Saint John

As for the rates, I posted an inquiry on facebook for my friends and relatives in Saint John, so i should get an answer for you soon, but it will be comparable to Halifax. It is only a short ride, 15 minutes tops and that is if traffic is really bad to get from the dock to the falls. Before you make plans see what the tide prediction is for that day.

Thank you for all your help!!

Sorry if answer already discussed but I don't remember and search function not working well. Wondering about how much taxi would cost from ship to Reversing Falls? Would they fit 4 people? Is it flat rate or more per person? Also, are there some waiting around the falls area to be able to catch one when we got ready to come back or should we make arrangements beforehand? We are trying to find the fastest way up and back from the rapids as we need the time for our other tour. We are thinking the bus would be too slow. There are 7 of us total so assuming we need at least two taxis. Thanks for all your help!

A friend of mine answered back, that it costs about 8 dollars Canadian for a trip from Market Square to Reversing Falls, one way. Now that price might change a bit, as it is a supply and demand economy and the demand will be higher in the summer, but I can't see it being more than 10.

Thank you so much (and your friend!) for that information! Hopefully there will be enough taxis around because two ships are in port that day!

Your more than welcome. You might have a slight delay, but I would imagine there will be lots of Taxi's. A cruise ship is like bread crumbs in a duck pond, the ducks (taxi's) will come running as soon as they hear the paper bag rustle.

Anyone in Halifax been to the Dalplex Fun Zone? It says it is close to the public gardens and looks like fun for kids...just curious if that would be worth it for a couple hours?

We go quite often on rainy days because we're members, but I'd say it's just okay. If you're only in Halifax for a day there are more interesting things you could do.

Thanks! We have similar things here in FL, but if it was something really amazing then I'd make an effort. Some of those places, like the one in Dallas, were really fantastic. Thanks for the local perspective!

There are a few scattered around the areas that you will be going to in Halifax. I can't comment on any of them since I quit over 10 yrs ago. However, he will likley be able to get Cuban Cigars up here, I don't know if that import has been allowed in the states yet. Just google Cigar stores, Halifax Nova Scotia!

There are a couple in Saint john too.

They are still illegal to be brought into the US.

Thanks for all the info on cigars. He was happy to hear that he could purchase a Cuban cigar. Bummer that he can't bring it home. I guess he will just have to enjoy it in the appropriate place on the ship.

Many thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread; I've been watching, learning, & getting research ideas since it was started all those months ago!

I do still have one specific question I hope someone in or with knowledge of Halifax can help me out with. I'm having trouble figuring out how walkable everything is for us and our DS5 because everything is stated in subjective terms like "not too far" "only a short while", etc. Although DSs a pretty sturdy kid, I'd hate to trek off to the far reaches of the waterfront and have it be too far for him to make it back on his own (he's getting a bit big for long-range piggy back rides any more). I'd really like to get a better idea of what our reasonable range of wandering should be.

Could someone try to estimate the exact mileage/distance between, say, the ship and the COWS store (which seems to be at the far end of the walkable waterfront) and how long it might take to get there walking at a slow-medium pace? Could you describe how strenuous the uphill hike to, say Freak Lunchbox, would be if we wanted to detour there?

Thanks for any insight you can lend!

I am on it............have a g/f who regularly walks all over downtown every Monday (part of her weight loss maintainance). Just emailed her with your info.

From the Ship to Cows Ice Cream is probably a 25 minute walk at the most. The walk up to freak lunchbox is quite steep, but only 2-3 blocks, so maybe five minutes of walking up hill. My five year old could walk to those places and back from the ship. He'd probably get a bit tired and grumpy on the way back, but not so much that it wouldn't be worth doing.

From the boat to Cows is just under 1 mile (completely flat). It would take about 20 minutes to stroll along the boardwalk. There are many places to stop and take a break to enjoy the scenery along the way. The trek up to the Freak Lunchbox or to Spring Garden Road is not to strenuous...2 blocks up hill. If you find it too steep you can always walk up 1 block then across a side street and up a block again! Halifax is really quite easy to navigate around. If you need assistance any passerby will be glad to help!
I hope this helps!!
