Official Thread For Upcoming Eastern Canadian Cruises

Looking for reviews of the Peggy's Cove/Titanic shore excursion. We are very interested in Titanic history, and I am debating booking a private tour in lieu of DCL's. I'm concerned that we will feel rushed at Fairview. I'd also like to see the Maritime Museum. Is there enough time to walk to the museum before/after DCL's excursion?

TIA for any feedback/advice!

We did the Canada cruise on 7/8, DM & DB did the Peggys Cove/Titanic excursion. They enjoyed the excursion and I know my Mom was very happy she did it with the Titanic add on. The excursion did not leave until 12:15 so that was enough time for them to see a little bit of Halifax before the excursion. Definitely no time to see Halifax after.

I did the Knots excursion which started at the Maritime. This excursion started at 9:15 am and we had plenty of time afterwards to enjoy the Pink Bus and Halifax.

Just wondering if anyone partcipated in the Photogrpahy excursion Disney is offering?
"Bay of Fundy Coastal Photography "

My sister and her family (2 adults and 2 kids ages 10 and 13) went on this tour on the July 15th cruise. They loved it. I can't wait to see their pictures but they all had great things to say about it. None of them have super special cameras but they all were able to learn new things about taking pictures and photo composition and they loved getting outside of the city for part of the tour. They went by the reversing rapids 2 times so they could see the water go in both directions. They would definately recommend this tour.

In Halifax we did the Ahoy Mates Tall Ship Silva sailing. It was a lot of fun. There were 6 of us, 2 seniors, 2 adults a 2 and a 6 year old. They had a Junior Sailor Program for the younger sailors. My 2 year old was too young to care but my 6 year old had a blast. They started with letting anyone who wanted to help, help raise the sails. Then they took them on a tour of the ship explaining the masts, sails, anchors, life boats, etc to them. Then they split the kids into 3 groups.
The first stop was knot tying. They learned to tie about 3 or 4 different knots. Each kid had a rope and they worked with the instructor to tie the knots. Then 2nd stop was button making. Each kid got to make 2 buttons. My daughter made one button of the ship and one pirate button. The 3rd stop was to stear the ship. Each kids had a turn at the wheel and got a chance to stear.
Then they brought out an instrument box and the kids all got to help play music with the fiddler. My youngest especially had a blast with this playing music and dancing.
The adults all really enjoyed the ride around the harbor and just having a nice relaxing view of Halifax from the harbor. There wasn't a guided tour of the harbour but if you had questions there were people to ask.
It was a little foggy at first but the weather cleared up nicely. It wasn't too cool even out of the water and it was an enjoyable time for all.

We also had booked the essential Halifax Hop on Hop off which gave us access to the HOHO bus, express tickets to the Maritime Musuem and the Citadel. By the time we had lunch we really only had time to go to the Maritime Museum and finish up one of the three loops on the HOHO. We probably would have been better off just buying tickets to the museum as we walked there from the Tall Ship Silva. I would have liked to have gone to the Citadel but we didn't have time.

We had lunch at the Bicycle Thief at Bishop's Landing. It was good. We actually ran into our server Aziz who was also eating there along with some of the other crew including a friend of my sister's who was in the show company.

I would love to go back to Halifax and spend more time there.

In Saint John we took the Saint John Highlights Tour. There were 10 of us on this tour. It was a nice tour and we were able to learn a lot about the town that we wouldn't have on our own. The tour guide was very knowledgable. Our first stop was the City Market. The kids all had fun exploring the little shops and tasting some samples. Then we drove around and stopped at the Reversing Falls. It was about an hour before high tide so the falls were reversing at the time. My sister and her family took a 2nd tour in the afternoon and when they came back the 2nd time on that tour (3rd time total) they were able to see the tide at low tide and said it was really cool to see the tide go both ways. It was a nice place. After that we stopped at the Carelton Martello Tower. The tower had some great views and the kids liked getting to dress as Red Coats, "fire" wood rifles, and explore the tower. It was a fun stop and they had a little book of activities for the kids. If they did a few of the activities they got a certificate and little prize at the end.
We finished up the tour at the ship and went back on board to have lunch. After lunch my parents went back to the room to relax, my sister and her family did the Bay of Fundy Photography Tour and my husband girls and I went for a walk to the New Brunswick Museum. It was an easy walk from the ship to the museum and with the family rate and my AAA card we were able to get in for under $16 total for the 4 of us. It was a nice museum and the girls had a lot of fun exploring the fossils, and the history section downstairs.

In NYC we took the Manhatten and Top of the Rock Debarkation tour. It was rainy and chilly in NYC. It was not exactly what we had planned and they cancelled the Newark excursion so we had to join the JFK/LaGuardia tour. There was another family going to Newark and they 8 of us had to take the Express Bus from the last stop of the tour (Grand Central Station) to Newark Airport. It worked out well but I'm not happy with the way Disney has it set up for debarkation tours. Top of the Rock was nice. A bus tour was nice Friday because there is no way you would have wanted to walk around in the wind/rain. It probably wasn't worth the cost of the excursion but it was better then going straight to the airport. Unfortunately our flight was delayed so we still spent way too much time in the Newark airport.

Thats great to hear! We are doing on our Sept 2nd cruise!! I cant wait! Thanks for letting us know what you sister and her family thought!!

My 19-year-old daughter and I were on this tour too, and we really enjoyed it. We learned some good tips from the photographer guide, and got to see some pretty places. It was great to see the reversing falls at high tide and then a few hours later as the tide was going out to see the huge difference in the height of the water. Our Peggy's Cove coastal hike was cancelled because the minimum number of people didn't sign up. We missed it by two. We changed to the Peggy's Cove and Titanic tour, and after seeing Peggy's Cove, I am very sad our original tour was cancelled. It was beautiful. My husband and younger daughter joined friends who rented a car and drove to Peggy's Coce, stopped for lobster at a roadside stand and then did a pub crawl. They had a great time.

Now I cant wait to take that tour. We are doing the Peggy's Cove and titanic too!! How was that? How long were you at Peggy's cove? popcorn::

How would you say the Peggy's Cove/Titanic tour compared to renting a car and driving? We are undecided on which way to go with this as we are a family of 5, so the car rental would cost much less and we could maybe spend more time there. But perhaps it is easiest to leave the driving to someone else. Decisions, decisions! And we want to go to the Fairview cemetery and the Maritime museum if there is time.

In Saint John we took the Saint John Highlights Tour.

Thank you so much for posting.
We're planning on doing this tour for our Sept 7th cruise. I have a very well behaved 4yr old and a 10 mos old. Do you think it would be a good fit?

Thanks

We are heading on the 9/12 cruise out of NY :goodvibes\

It will be myself, DH, DD-11 and DD-7. Looking to show them the sites up there, but on a budget.

Can anyone recommend a less expensive excursion that really shows off the beauty of the ports? I saw the tour trolleys and double decker bus tours. My kids would like that, I think.

Has anyone been on either of those? They are not very expensive, but I don't want to book it if they are not worth it.

Thanks!!

We just got back Sat, and we enjoyed Halifax on our own. We walked along the waterfront boardwalk, then up George Street - right through the Parade grounds, with a church open for free visit, up to the town clock. We purchased a family pass to the Citadel for about $25, and then walked over tot he Public Gardens. We did all this and lunch and were back at the pier by 3:30, left the ship about 9:30. We even had lunch at a local eatery.

Great port to explore on your own!

I would do the car rental. We only had 40 minutes to explore the area, not even close to enough time. My friends said the drive was easy. Before our excursion, I walked up to the public gardens and got Cows ice cream, grabbed some lunch, and we returned five minutes before all-aboard. It was a very busy day, and I napped on the bus. My husband and friends took the time they wanted and didn't feel rushed. There were too many things to see in Halifax and nowhere near enough time to do it.

Thanks....I think we will probably rent a car. Do you know if it was difficult to park there? I know it will probably be crowded with buses as I think there are 2 cruise ships docked in Halifax when we are there.

We are very interested in this as well! Darsura, it seems that maybe you are as interested in Titanic history as we are. We are booked on the Peggy's Cove/Titanic excursion, but I am also considering either renting a car, or hiring a private guide. I really want to absorb everything I can about Halifax's role in the Titanic recovery while we are there. I was afraid that we would be rushed at Fairview cemetery. We'd also like to see the Maritime Museum. Your cruise is a week before ours. If you get the chance to post a review or PM me when you get back, I'd really appreciate it! :)

I definitely will!

Anxious to hear reviews of the Peggy's Cove/Titanic excursion in Halifax. We are very interested in Titanic history so we booked this excursion. I'm wondering if we should book a private tour to maximize our time at the historic Titanic areas (Fairview, Maritime Museum). I'm worried they will rush us at Fairview. If we stick with the DCL tour, is there still time to walk to the Maritime Museum and spend some time there?

TIA for any feedback!

Just got back from the July 15th cruise and we did this excursion and thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, you will be rushed. We could have spent another half hour at Peggy's Cove and the time at the cemetery was minimal. You heard a few very interesting stories, took your shots of some of the tombstones and you were back on the bus. I did feel rushed, but I did get the shots I wanted and learned a thing or two. You will get back to the boat in time to sail, but there will be NO time to go to the museum after. Best to get off the boat early and walk over there and then get back on the boat to meet for your tour.

Thanks for all of the information contained in this thread! It has been immensely helpful in trying to plan our visit to your area - and we will almost be able to feel like locals with all of the "insider" info all of you have supplied :) I can't believe it, but I did manage to read each and every post :)

- Many thanks to Herman Triplets + 1 for the map link in post # 46

- Love the iea of stopping in at the casion to give them my money ;) - great idea in post # 83

- Post # 531 - Great link for Tom's port guide - going to download it to my Ipad and it will be very useful since we are going to see the sights on our own!

- For the poster who mentioned Carlos Bakery - I didn't see any response to your question - if you haven't cruised yet, here is my $.02 - skip it. First of all it isn't particularly convenient to get to - you would have to ferry across (thinking that would be the best option) and then you would have a bit of a hike if you were to walk there -
Secondly - you will waste many hours waiting online to get insiide to buy something. It won't taste any better than anything you can get at any other bakery in NY - I would just ask someone local to wherever you are staying where the closest bakery is and head there - and if you like Italian pastry and will be staying in NY - you will find many options :)

And my last question - can anyone give a cross street for the location of Bud the Spud's French Fry truck on Spring Garden Road? I really want to try the french fries on our walk back to port after our day in Halifax!
The Carlo's Bakery experience is for people who are fans of the Cake Boss show or enjoy cake decorating. We went to Carlo's Bakery at 2 PM on Friday and there was a two-hour wait to get in so I just took a photo. I can't tell you what would be a better time since my friends went there two weeks ago at the same time and didn't have much of a wait. Just catch the Path train to Hoboken from 33rd Street. Outside the terminal, turn left and go up to Washington Street. Turn right. Easy walk to Carlo's.

Yes, we enjoyed the excursion. We booked the City Tour of Halifax just after getting off the ship in the early afternoon. We saw the Public Gardens, the Citadel, the harbor, historic houses, etc. The tour guide was excellent!

Thanks so much for the reply.

Thank you for the feedback! I am leaning more and more towards a self-guided tour of the Maritime Museum and cemetery.
