Official thread for the 2010 Princess 1/2 Marathon & 5k- REGSITRATION IS OPEN!

I would challenge him to run that 8 min mile now, though!

Oh, i did! :thumbsup2 He still insists he could do it for a few miles.... and i told him, "Maybe you can -- but, you won't be able to walk after!" :lmao:

We are leaving in about 12 hours and should be in WDW on Thursday pm. I am getting so anxious and excited.:yay:
All you Wishers have been so helpful and supportive. Reading the last posts, I feel we are all going through the same emotions. I keep saying, yes, that's exactly how I feel right now too. Critical husband, personal doubts, nerves, etc., they are all surfacing. But we must all remember, we can do this; we will do this; and we all should be proud of ourselves (at least that's what I've been repeating to myself)
I can't wait to be a part of this wonderful experience and be able to share it with such wonderful new friends. :grouphug:
And, Syko, so happy to hear your paperwork is in and you're ready to roll! :cheer2:

I bought my throw-away as well! Walmart had gray velour zip up thingies for $3. It is far from pretty, but will do the job and I won't feel bad about donating it.

9 min mile! I have done one just around 11, once. Dragging across the finish line... that is more than likely!!

I bought the SAME not so pretty jacket at Walmart too for $3 for my throw-way. lol :rotfl:

Okay, I need some opinions... drive or cab? Pros and cons of each?

BWV doesn't have race transportation.

OMG.. not to rain on the parade - but the last 3 miles last year were the WORST for me.. LOL I hit a wall around mile 10.... there is just so much "roadway" on this course - for such a long stretch, it's hard at the end -- and the overpass/ramp doesn't help.. LOL but, never have I just wanted to cry so much as when i saw that "big epcot ball" in the distance, and i knew i was close!! LOL

I'm anticipating the same feelings! But I keep telling myself, if I have to, I will CRAWL across that finish line! It might sound a little corny, but I'm putting a bunch of uplifting types of songs on my ipod to listen to at the end. For example, the Coldplay song Viva La Vida really gets me going when I feel crappy.

I never feel warmed up until mile 8!!

kat I would drive in if I was you.
That way you can skip bag check, not have to wait for a cab after the race and save a lot of $$$$$.

/
Will you be at dinner on Sat. night? My mom might want to walk with you and I would feel better knowing she had someone to walk with.

:lmao: That conversation with your mom was great!

I'm doing the whole trip alone, so you definitely won't be the only one solo out there. And like the others have said, there will be others out there to cheer us on and walk/run with us from time to time.

That will probably be around my pace, so I might be a tagalong! :yay:

I would love if your guys join us!!! we will be at the dinner sat night.... lets get together and see what corals we are in and plan to join up!!!!

I'll be at SSR! We won't be getting there til Friday though!!!
:banana::banana: yeah!!!! hope to see you around

I will have a do you dis bag on my stroller if you see it give me a holla! see you guys soon!

The same is true for me - the first 3 miles are tough and then past that point I get into a groove and just keep going! Don't let it get you down. You know you can do it! My longest run has been 10 as well. If the first 3 miles are hard, then maybe the last 3 miles will be easy! (maybe, haha)
I like this idea. Let's hope!
I keep loading up my ipod with more songs that I think will help me get through the race.

I'm happy that I didn't have to buy anything for my throw-away clothes. I have a pair of sweatpants that are old and too big, then a Disneyland sweatshirt I was going to give to Goodwill anyway.

Okay, I need some opinions... drive or cab? Pros and cons of each?

BWV doesn't have race transportation.

Advice I have recieved from some veteran racers is to try and use the Disney provided transportation for the event. They will drop you off at the right place and will get you there in time. You could drive to one of the host resorts and take the transportation from there.

I'm scared too... I just keep repeating to myself the WISH motto.. that has really kept me encouraged... Dead Last Finish is better then Did Not Finish is much greater then Did Not Start. Dh is really discouraging because he feels that if you don't try to run your hardest you aren't really accomplishing anything.. I'm going at this to be able to say I finished... I'm a half-marathoner and I'm going to have FUN!!! You will be running with 1299 of your new closest friends LOL.

The WISH motto has gotten me through many a race as well. The fact that you have gotten to the point of being ready to start this race is a huge accomplishment.

The thing about running your hardest is...well, there are a few things:

It takes practice to be able to push yourself to the max in a race while still being able to finish.

A sprint is not an appropriate approach for a longer distance race. Different peoples "max" is just....different.

Just because my pace is slower, doesn't necessarily mean I'm working less hard than the people who finish ahead of me.

Just because someone walks some or all of a race doesn't mean they are taking it easy! Far from it. I have seen the last finisher of quite a few races and I daresay in almost every case, the person who comes in last is working just as hard for that finish as anyone else, possibly more than many, and for a longer period of time.

I keep telling myself, if I have to, I will CRAWL across that finish line! It might sound a little corny, but I'm putting a bunch of uplifting types of songs on my ipod to listen to at the end. For example, the Coldplay song Viva La Vida really gets me going when I feel crappy.

Oooh, I love Viva La Vida on my shuffle when times are tough! My other current favorites when times are tough include:

The Middle by Jimmy Eat World.
She's Got the Look
Mr. Blue sky - a dance remix
The Lonely Goatherd by Lora Munro (I like the remix)
and (drumroll)
The Hamster Dance

One final thought on racing at Disney - Racing at Disney is different from any other race I've ever done. The fact that people stop - flat out STOP in the middle of a race for pictures with characters - stopping in races is just not done, generally, but people at all paces stop for pictures in these events. A friend of mine also ran the half in January and he had a camera with him but did not stop for a single picture. I offered to take his picture with the Goofy bilboards but he turned me down!! He aspires to be a more serious racer and he just doesn't stop during a race - BUT after we got home, he looked at my photos and said he actually regretted not stopping for any himself.

Regarding the last three miles - yes, they can be very challenging, but you have the knowledge that you have already completed 10. When I got to that point in my frist half marathon, my feet were really tired. I had had an injury and had not gotten all my miles in training. So yes, my feet hurt. At that point, though, the distance remaining is a fraction of what you've already accomplished!

As for taking a cab vs. driving yourself, I'm going to say that if you have a car, probably it makes more sense to drive. If you are thinking of renting a car for this one thing, taking a cab is fine, too and less expensive. Once nice thing about cabbing it is if you are nervous pre-race, you won't have to stress about getting there on time/getting lost/remembering where you parked. Nice thing about driving yourself, though, is you don't have to check your bag.

I'll wear my WISH nametag to the meet - is anyone bringing sticky nametags to POR? I could probably bring some if that would help. It's nice to be able to see people's usernames and real names together with faces.

I do have a car, in fact we have three among our group.

I think trying to use Disney transportation would stress me out even more. Having to figure out the right route to get there, how to get past the guard gate, how early to get there to still get a bus, etc.

I think we wouldn't wait for a cab after, would go straight into Epcot. We have an 10:30 bfast ressie.

Sailorswife, hang in there!! I know what you mean about not having a lot of support. My DH was ragging on me this weekend about how it isn't really a "race" at the pace I go at (12:00/mile run/walk intervals). He is a wonderful husband butfFor him to think it is a race I would have to be clocking 8:00 miles the whole way. I was upset about it for a while but then I realized I am an adult and I alone have the power to feel good or bad about something. For me, it is a dream to cover a 13 mile distance in any fashion. I have always wanted to run the whole thing but I can't get to that step if I don't do the step I am at now, which is run/walking to the best of my current ability. I am going to be proud of myself and my little boys will see their mommy, not as someone going slowly, but as someone who did something pretty cool.

Can you tell I've been having some struggles with this lately? I haven't trained as much as I would have liked to, but I have trained enough to finish without being too far off my goal time.

So don't listen to anyone who tries to get you down. At the end of the day, only you can instill pride in yourself. Only you can get yourself across that finish line and to meet your goal!!! So go for it and be proud of yourself, and meet yourself exactly where you are. You can do it!! :cheer2:

LOL my DH is the same way as both of yours!!! He ran last night and just had to show me his Garmin, it said 6 minute miles!! I was like whatever, you stink, go take a shower show off!! He has said the same to me about if your not running your fastest what's the point. My answer.... I run to have a good time, to enjoy the process, and to see all kinds of people who otherwise may not ever meet come together and do something besides sit on the couch. I run for me and for the way it makes me feel. I run to be alone and listen to my music, to relieve stress, for exercise, for not only what it's done on the outside but for my inside too. I run to see the joy that it brings other people when they realize they can do it. I run because you might start alone but somehow along the way you meet people and cheer each other on! I run because I can and it doesn't matter how slow I am!!!

I think there are two kinds of runners, the serious ones and the ones that really enjoy the whole process. Sure we want to beat our time and do our best but we really get out there and run because it's fun and we enjoy the camaraderie with the other runners :)

That's just my .02 cents, lol

Kat Last year we had a car and drove, no problem just leave plenty early...I couldn't believe all the cars we saw coming in while we were already in our corral. We did have a time change "event" to deal with last year too. Just follow the route in the program so you don't run into any road closures. Scope it out the day before if you aren't familiar with WDW property. Are you getting any snow in Durham? It has been snowing in Charlotte since about 11 am. YUCK!

I'll be on the TM one last time tomorrow morning for a short run, would have been nice to be outside-if the weather was nicer.

Joan, what time do you think we need to leave to get there on time? I would also like to be as close to the start of the last corral (I am sure I am there!) as possible.

It is just raining here right now (Morrisville/Raleigh, where I work), but it needs to NOT snow because I am supposed to leave here at about noon tomorrow! :headache:

Thanks for all the advice, I really really appreciate it!!! :goodvibes

Kat...I have a question, if you don't know the answer, maybe someone else will. We are at the Swan and were planning to take a cab. There are 3 of us, leaving our hubbies sleeping in at the hotel . Which way are you leaning now? We drove from off-site last year and parked easily. It actually seemed like a very easy process...we arrived by 5:30 (equal to 4:30 this year) and headed to the corrals pretty quickly. We were planning to leave the car with the guys to drive later but people on these boards seemed concerned about cabs and getting there. Do you think that stress is due to being late or the cabs not getting close enough or cost? I'd love to hear the hesitation for taking a cab. I agree with you that "getting to" Disney transportation would stress me out way more than getting there on my own directly. I'm just not sure what to do.

Next related question...does anyone know if we could enter the front of Epcot and go straight through to the International Gateway if we have our room keys for the Swan (and tix, of course) if IG hasn't opened yet so we can take the boat back to our hotel? I know we've gone in early through that gate for dining ressies at Norway and a Segway Tour but was wondering if they'd let you go the other way. Otherwise, we have a transportation issue at the other end as well (the only car we have seats 4 so all 6 of us can't ride back in it even if we have it there).

Sorry for rambling...any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I cannot believe how close this is!!!

momto2littlemonsters, we will be at the expo on Sat afternoon as well. Are you going to the POR dinner? I would love to say hi.

I am obviously Kat, but not sure how else to identify each other. Will any of you have a button w/ your screen name or anything? Maybe I should make something.

If any of you see us on Sunday in Epcot, I will be wearing a black drinking shirt with Half Marathon... Half Drinking on it. I am tall, about 30-40 lbs overweight, and the only one in the group with long brown hair. :goodvibes

Hey Kat I plan on going! I will try and wear a name tag with my real name and my screen name, lol. It would be great to meet you!

Nope - my dh is just in denial.. He seems to forget that when "he ran a 8min mile" it was 18 years ago in basic training - and he had a drill sgt. screaming at him!! LOL

He gives me a hard time sometimes (jokingly i guess) that it's not really a "race" if i am doing a walk/run.... like i am less of an athlete b/c i am not flat out just running!!
Ohhhhhhhhhhh.. that gets under my skin!!!!!

I think they do that on purpose because they know they can! lol

My hesitation on taking a cab is a) cost (since we have the car and that's free), b) getting a cab for 7 people, and c) that the cab won't get close enough, and/or will get as stuck in traffic as the car would thus sort of negating the reason.

However, my group is split between driving and cabbing. They are afraid of the traffic if we drive and having to leave too early. How much time did you allow to get there? Based on what they are saying from offsite directions, it looks like we just swing onto Buena Vista Dr from BWV, then right on World Dr, and then right to Epcot from there.

Yes, you can walk to the IG from the entrance to Epcot. The traffic goes both ways.

I agree on the cost but we just need a standard cab as there is only 3 of us.

Last year, we stayed off site and planned to get their by 5:15 (4:15) but actually arrived right around 5:30 and didn't hit terrible traffic, yes there was traffic but not stressful "we won't make it" traffic. I have to second what was said above though about the traffic AFTER we were headed to corrals! We were wondering if those people really would make the start---way too much stress for me:eek:

I don't know that I consider myself a true WISH-er (as I do so much lurking and not so much contributing) but I am so thankful to have discovered you guys! Those that haven't found you wonderful people don't know that be there by 4:30 kinda means be there by 4:30. Yes, it really is a 15-20 minute walk to the corrals and yes, there really are long port-o-potty lines at that time (but if you are there by 4:30, you have the time to wait!)

All tosay, I think if you get in a cab or your car at 4:10 to head to Epcot, you'll be able to park and be there in plenty of time. One more plus of having a car...you can stay in it once you park until 4:45 or or even 5:00 and stay warm!

Thanks for all your help !
