Official thread for the 2010 Princess 1/2 Marathon & 5k- REGSITRATION IS OPEN!

I have been religiously sticking to my 12 week training plan since mid November. (working out 6 times a week!) But this morning I slept in cause I was feeling lousy... now I feel guilty! Tell me it was ok to skip one run!!

Donna - It's ALWAYS good to listen to your body. Muscles need to rest in order to recover. Can't make it a habit, but if your body is saying no, let it have a break. Taking a bit off can have amazing results on pace sometimes too!

DonnaJean, you are awesome! Give yourself a break! Have a cookie. :) Take a load off. Let your body rest. Don't be surprised if you have a better workout tomorrow!!

LOL.. I hear you about the intervals.. that's what I HAVE to do... DH wonders why I'm not trying to run the whole thing... I actually have no desire to be able to run 13.1 miles I just want to finish the darn thing at some kind of interval running. Right now I'm trying to decide what interval ould be the best for me... I've been running a 3r/1-2 min walk but I'm wondering if I shouldn't do a 1:1 ratio or a 2:1 ratio.

I have played around with a lot of different interval ratios and found that 1:1 works best for me. I am a little faster doing that than 2:1 because I can run faster during the running segments. I can do a 12:00 mile on a good day, but tend to average about 12:30 on most of my long runs. Yes, it is annoying to keep starting and stopping every minute, but you get used to it.

I use a script that I downloaded to insert a "ding" every minute in my itunes playlist. That keeps me from looking at my watch. That program is here: http://www.active.com/donate/tntntx/jeffwelch. I've taken a 170 beats per minute podcast and used a program called MP3 splitter (it's free for 30 days and I found it by googling MP3 splitter) to divide the podcast into 1 minute chunks. Then I used the script to insert the dings. It sounds complicated, but it isn't. PM me if you want me to walk you through it. Or, if enough of you would like the instructions I would be happy to post them here. I think most people just use a timer, but I can't hear them over my music and I don't want to drive the people around me crazy by beeping every minute.

Another useful tool is the run/walk pace calculator available here: http://runwithperseverance.blogspot.com/. It allows you to type in your walking pace, your running pace, and your intervals to determine a time goal. It is fun to play with.

Hi Everyone! This will be my first Disney race and my first half marathon! I'm very excited and very nervous. I'll be driving down to Orlando on Saturday by myself, leaving the kids and hubby home so I can really enjoy the Expo and not worry about them being bored. Where is everyone staying? What time is everyone getting up and going to the start? I think I'm more nervous about getting enough sleep, eating something in the morning, and making it there on time, lol. Oh and is anyone dressing up? I always worry about being comfortable during a race, nothing worse than having a shirt that you have to keep pulling down! I'm hoping for a 13 minute pace. I know I'm not going to break any records, my goal is to finish with a walk/run strategy! Good luck to everyone and I hope your training is going great!!!! We can do this!!!

Those are awesome suggestions! I love the "ding" idea for the iPod. I will be looking into that one. Thanks for sharing!

I actually have no desire to be able to run 13.1 miles :lmao: I just want to finish the darn thing at some kind of interval running. Right now I'm trying to decide what interval ould be the best for me... I've been running a 3r/1-2 min walk but I'm wondering if I shouldn't do a 1:1 ratio or a 2:1 ratio. I've started getting shin splints this week.. my short run last night of 3 miles was terrible... and I know the shins are because I'm adding mileage too quickly (2 weeks ago my long runs were 2 miles  now my short runs are 3 and my long run scheduled for this week is 7:scared:) so I'm thinking I'm going to slow down a bit and not stress too much about the time as about adding mileage. I know come race day I can do 3:2 intervals for the first half and stay around a 14 min pace, but I won't make it if I don't have the mileage base to build on. My biggest fear right now is getting injured and not even being able to run... second biggest fear is of course being swept.

...

Kat, You are doing so great!! 10 Miles at a 13.4 pace is awesome!!! Treadmill or no treadmill, that is a fabulous pace for someone who just started training in Jan:cheer2:

Thanks for the encouragement!! I really appreciate it. :goodvibes

My DH wonders why I am doing this at all!

What you are describing is why I am working on pacing intervals MWF, and distance on the weekend. My two fears are exactly yours, although in opposite order.

I would rather walk the whole thing at a 16 min mile pace, than try to finish quicker and be unable to finish at all.

I started with short runs of 3 miles, or trying to get to 3 miles, and long of 6. Now shorts are staying 3 and I did 8 and 10, and now will be back to 6 this week for a recovery week.

I have mostly been listening to my body... if something doesn't feel right (hurt, extreme fatigue) after the first 20 min, then I back it off and once have even just stopped. The first 20 min for me *always* suck, but I can usually get past it.

You know I have did 3:1 and my mom kept telling me I would go faster with 2:1, I didn't believe her but it is true. Training our first long run she wanted to do 1:1, I didn't really want to do this but I went along. I ran 8 miles and was not tired at all. Now last week I did 9 miles with 2:1 and about 6-7 miles I started to feel it. I would like to play around with the times here and there and compare total time....2:1 compared to 1:1, if it is the same or only a few minutes difference I am starting to think it might be smarter to do the 1:1 and have it be a more comfortable run. I am doing 10 miles this weekend, so I guess I will time it and see. The only prob is am doing it on an indoor track, so if I forget to click a lap.....it won't be accurate.

HI everyone! Love reading this thread - you are such an inspiring bunch! I can't join you this year, but I'm planning on next year. I didn't notice one, but is anyone going to be writing a TR about their experience? I'd really love to read one!

Thanks for all the awesome information - good luck everyone! :)

I DID have a great workout today... 4.5miles on the TM and did my best mile yet!
Thanks!

Hi, momto2littlemonsters! (Excellent name, by the way!:thumbsup2) This will also be my first race and I'm am downright scared! I am staying at AKV and will be hitchin' a ride with someone from this thread. Disney practically demands that you be at the race by 4am, and you have to include travel time, so I'm thinking I will be getting up around 2:00am. :scared1: I plan on getting to bed as early as I can the night before, although I will probably be too nervous to get much sleep. I will nibble on something as I'm getting ready. I haven't decided what yet. Maybe oatmeal and a banana...? I haven't decided what I'm wearing yet, but I'm planning on at least a small tiara.

Sounds like you are well trained for this race! Maybe you can encourage some of us who aren't feeling so confident. :rolleyes1

Hmm, I've been planning on walking the whole race, but I think I'll start playing around with alternating running and walking. I never thought that that would help my time. I'll start tonight! Thanks, Brookie.

Welcome, Twingle! It's good that you are reading this now, I think. You can get a head start on what everyone else is freaking out about, so you will know how to handle it when it's your turn!

I have started writing a PTR and will continue it into a TR once I'm back.

I DID have a great workout today... 4.5miles on the TM and did my best mile yet!
Thanks!

Yay, donnajean! Good for you. I bet that was a big confidence booster. :cool1:

Congrats on deciding for next year! It has been work, but I have really enjoyed the training! Good Luck!

I have started a PTR... have not gotten into the training much in the PTR, but just started it today.

Training, training, training, what to do, how to do it????

I'm no pro-but I just read an article that said to take it slow and be comfortable with your training-don't burn out by doing too much too fast.

Last year my daughters wanted to try the half-I'm a runner, DD #1 is a runner, and DD #2 just loves Disney. We trained-me at home, them at college and we communicated about how we were doing and who was comfortable with running and walking. We decided on a 10 minute mile (that's 6mph on the TM) followed by 5 minute walk at 15 min. pace (4 mph on the TM). Our training went very well-race day comes.....
In the excitement, they just wanted to run and so I paced them at a 10 min. mile for three mile-ALL RUNNiNG-then we went to the 10 min run/5 min. walk...all is fine until about mile 8-DD #2 is starting to fade. Mile 9, 10 them 11, less and less running...DD #2 was now at no run just survive. DD #1 wants to run, but we had decided early in training we would do it together. We made it and did well, but the moral of the story is...STICK TO YOUR PLAN AND DON'T GET CAUGHT UP IN THE EXCITEMENT!
I think DD #2 would have done better if we had stuck to our plan.

DD#1 can't make it this year, DD #2 will be on spring break so she will run the 5K and I will do the half.

I really bonked my 9 mile yesterday (did manage 8 miles), but by evening had a full blown head cold, so that must be it. Glad I have it now, so hopefully I won't have to deal with a cold on race day.

Joan, thanks for sharing your tips. I think you bring up some great points about pacing and not getting caught up in the excitement so you can finish strong.

Also, I wanted to say that it is so nice that you did the race with your daughters! I hope when my boys are older they will enjoying doing things with their dear old Mommy!

I am a total non-runner and overweight to boot, but I got the crazy idea last fall to do this race. Then I broke a toe, traveled at Christmas to a snowy locale and fell off the training wagon. But I did 10 miles today at a 14:03 pace running as much as I could and walking. I can't run nearly as well as I did before the toe incident but I'm happy with it. Not quite the half marathon length but I will do a few more tens along with my shorter runs this month and then try out the full race length in a couple of weeks. It was a huge morale boost!

In retrospect I should have probably scheduled the 5K but I couldn't resist that castle!

Glad to find this board. Lots of good info. Thanks!:cheer2:

Good for you, DisneyFansFour! :cheer2:

You will make it and you will do great!

DisneyFansFor - That is awesome! You WILL make it!!!

Joan - Wow, 8 with afull blown cold. Great job. Now, let yourself rest and get better. :goodvibes

NOt much for me last couple days. DH's b-day was Tuedsay adn I worked outside all day yesterday and was dead tired. TM tonight.

Hi everyone -

Last week, my training was less than ideal I did 8 on Sunday - which was great and ran once while I was in Disney for the weekend (Fri,Sat&Sun).

First the TM at AKV - are horrible!! They are old and have no cushion, which after running friday night I decided to just throw in the towel --- it did not help I was up since 3am (since lovely dh picked the 6am flight out to orlando-:headache:)

Bottom line - I was OK with taking an easy week and just running twice, I have really been doing great only missing 1 run in 5 weeks.

We flew home Sun night and was in bed by 1am and up at 6am to start the week and put my college professor hat on

I figured Mon, I needed to recover just from being so gosh darn tired, and Tue well the reality of back to work sunk back in. all of which I am OK with - honest~

Last night, I was still tired but I knew I needed to back on the program and start running again. After only doing 1 mile I became very weak and dizzy and just out of sorts, I was determined to complete the 3 miles and asked my husband to get me sports beans ......... something to help me finish.

I was dripping, but finished 3 -- although I felt horrible doing it and i was so sweaty for just doing 3 - not to be to personal but I when I did 8 miles i was the same hot sweaty mess. It does not make any sense to me what happend.

Maybe my body just wanted no parts to running - I dont know......but I am so puzzled.

Any suggestions what could have happened? or what i can do for it to NEVER happen again??

P.S. Since I have been home I have also stopped drinking coffee after dinner, so we ate dinner at 6:30 and I did my tm at 10:45pm (which is normal for me since i have 4 children - my 8 miles I did at 11pm - so the time is about the same)

Had a great run this morning! I had my best mile (outside) yet! Even though it was cold (about 20 degrees) and windy... But I solidered on! I did a 12:53, and for someone who had not run EVER 3 months ago, I think that's pretty good!!
