Official thread for the 2010 Princess 1/2 Marathon & 5k- REGSITRATION IS OPEN!

dislvr74, thanks!! I am terrified of being swept. I have only done a few, non-timed 5Ks, and have never really done anything approaching distance like this. Plus I am at least 45 lbs overweight and just started training at the beginning of Jan.

I was able to do 10 miles this weekend at a 13.4 mph pace, but that was on the treadmill.

I agree with dislvr74, Kat. You have absolutely nothing to worry about! It sounds like you are doing really well, so kudos to you! :thumbsup2

I'm in too, Caitsmama!

GetnThinr (Wendy) - ASMu -- half and 5K

Hi Wendy!!!!! I will add you! I am so glad you are back in this year! I remember us going back and forth passing each other last year, and helping each other thru -- you were a great source of inspiration! :thumbsup2

Did my long day yesterday of 7 miles (on the TM) - maintained a 13:45 pace - doing a walk/run of a 1:1 ratio - toe is still sore - can't believe how sore it still is after a month!!!! But, other than that i feel good.. This was the longest i have been able to do since hurting my toe..so, i'll take it!

BTW - as far as the expo goes -- we went at opening last year, never again! I am planning on going over later Friday afternoon - mabye when everyone else is eating dinner.. LOL It was packed friday a.m. last year. I can't go Sat. as we are doing the 5k.
I will say though, i would NOT pay $225 to upgrade to attend the expo earlier -- save your $$!

I have been lurking for a little while, and taking time to read through the thread and I want to thank you all for your inspiration. I am thinking about doing the half next year, and you all have given me a lot to think about. I am overweight and have never been a runner, but after reading this thread I don't think doing the half would be impossible. You guys are amazing!

Aurora, I am over 200 lbs at 5'8", and the only exercise I did from Aug-Dec was 1 ice hockey game a week. I have never ever been a runner, although I have definitely been in better shape than this. The three 5Ks I have done were walking only, over a year ago, and recreational Susan Komen type stuff.

I started training on Jan 4th and could barely finish 30 min on the treadmill at a 17 min per mile pace. There is no way I woud have thought I could do 6 miles, let alone 10!

I am not saying it has been easy, but with the help of some friends (3 avid runners and a fitness instructor), I came up with a plan and so far, it has been working. Oh, and I have lost almost 13 lbs.

So, moral of the story is... you can DO this. Find a plan, like Galloway, and follow it. You have over a year, so start slow and steady, and you will get there!! :goodvibes

Wow--that is great. Congrats! You have come a long way!!

Hello, ladies! I started at C25K last week, with my dream being the Princess 1/2 in 2011. I read this whole thread over the weekend, and I just wanted to let you all know I am cheering for you. You can do it! I can't wait to read about your success. I look forward to having such a wonderful support group for the 2011 race. Have fun!

Welcome! You are where I was this time last year--I bet, after the 5K, you'll be itching to sign up for the half--I know I was!! You just want more!! Hope to see you at the mixer at 5pm at Port Orleans!

:lmao: You are going to be fine if you can maintain that pace for 10 miles! Seriously, you have nothing to worry about. Even if you slow down a bit outside, you are going to be well ahead of the sweepers. I'm actually slower on a treadmill, but I think I'm weird, so you probably do need to count on being a little slower outside.

I agree with dislvr, HockeyKat--I am soooo much slower on the treadmill. I find it so boring! I did my run yesterday on the treadmill and found myself walking much more that I normally would. I was staring at a red wall and was just so bored...

Happy Monday runners! We are all one week closer to our goal! :) :woohoo::cheer2::banana::worship::dance3:

Aurora, you can do it! Sign up for it when you can, that will firm up your goal. Then get a trainin schedule (there are a million online that you can choose from), then get started! There will be aches and pains (though not too many, if you pace yourself and don't overdo it), there will be setbacks and amazing leaps forward. I am overweight and will probably be walking the whole thing, but I have come really far in just the past few months. You'd be amazed at what ourt bodies can do when we set our minds to it!

As for the dreadmill, our Y has a bunch with the TVs attached. You just plug the headphones in and can watch any regular cable channel. Last night, I was watching the Matrix Revolutions, and the action scenes really helped take my mind off the 7 miles I was doing. I can't imagine just staring at a wall while walking on it. I would go insane.

Hi, everyone. I'm just checking in. It has been hard for me to train consistently the last few weeks. This is my husband's busy time at work and he has been getting home at 10 or 11pm at night. That has really put a crimp in my nighttime running plans, especially since my baby wakes up to breastfeed around that time every night. Not to mention, I don't want to go outside and run at that time. I just don't feel safe.

During the day I am alone with my baby in the morning--and lots of grad school homework--before my 3yo and 4 yo come home from preschool at noon for the rest of the afternoon and night.

Yes, I know, excuses, excuses. :rolleyes1 I didn't go my 8 miles this weekend and I've been freaking out about it. So today I was forced to embrace... BOB, my double jogging stroller. I have used it on occasion for shorter training runs but not for a long run. But what else can I do at this point? So I took it out with my baby and did 6 miles at a 12:00 pace. I'm about a minute slower when I'm alone but it really isn't about the time for me at this point. I just have to get out there and get the miles in.

My baby really enjoyed it (okay, I went at naptime and he slept the whole time, waking briefly when an army of fire engines sped past us at mile 3) and it went much better than I thought it might. I have a love/hate relationship with BOB. It pushes smoothly but it is as wide as a bus on the sidewalk, and my DS is 17 lbs and Bob is 35-40 lbs. But I figure I must get extra training benefits from having to push that thing around while running. I wanted to do the full 8 but ran out of time at 6, and I'm happy with that for now.

So, it looks like it will be me and BOB for the next 5 weeks. I have to imagine how much faster I will be able to run when I'm alone again!

Keep up the good work, everyone! :)

Amy - SO glad that worked fro you! You will feel like you're flyign come race time!!!!

Kat - That's amazing!

Aurora - DH and I went from 0 to full marathon in 10 months in 2005/6. I don't recommend that plan. Being ready for Princess by this time next year is certainly doable, though! My favorite traning bok is MArathoning for MOrtals. Very reasonable and very inspirational. Have heard great things about Galloway, though too. Just find a plan tha tlooks like it will work for you adn go!

So I just found out that All Star Sports doesn't have coffee makers in the rooms! Anyone know if the resorts will have something open at 3am Sunday morning so I can get tea before the race?? ...or even hot water?

I only have two more long runs before our race next month! I have 12.5 this weekend and 14 on the 20th. I bought a top to go with my new skirt (I have tried both to make sure I can run in them don't worry!) and my magical express documents have arrived. I'm so excited :upsidedow

I got my ME documents this weekend too! I'm so excited!

I can't speak for the resorts Princess weekend, but for Marathon weekend, the foodcourts opened up early. I'm sure that info will be coming out shortly when they have the programs ready.

I've got a roomie for the race too! Another DISer who I am also friends with on FB will be joining us!

I subscribed to this thread a few months ago, but this is my first post. I am registered to do the 5K & Half Marathon. This will be my first trip to Disney by myself, but hopefully I will get some "me" time. I just wanted to introduce myself, and hope to encourage each of you during the race.

Thanks!

Welcome, Andrea! Good luck with the 5k and the Half! I am doing the half and my 3yr old and 4yr old are doing the family fun run on Saturday. You will love this thread. There are lots of very friendly and supportive princesses here!

Hi Andrea,
Welcome.
You will have so much fun and everyone here is so helpful and supportive.
We did the Family 5K last year; and this is our first time doing the Princess Half.

Wow! You are doing great! I remember training a few years ago, b-feeding twins, lack of sleep, grad school, etc. It is tough to find time to get the running in too. I got one night a week about every other week. I tried the jogger thing, but I just had a hard time pushing/steering, etc. It is tough work pushing kids in a stroller, I think the furthest I ever got with the twins was about 4 miles, good for you!

I know it seems like everyone will be trying to get to the front of the last corral, but honestly that just doesn't occur to everyone. I told my friend (a 16 min miler) that we would line up as soon as the corrals open and she had no idea why I was suggesting that. So, I think if you line up early you will be towards the front, maybe not at the rope, but right up there.

You have to remember that if you are at that 16 min mile pace, you will not be swept. A 15 min mile give you plenty of cushion in case you need to go to the bathroom or whatever. Also, as someone posted on another thread here (I think it was called "sweepers" or something like that) you will be given every opportunity to speed up. You will know if you are in danger of being swept and, hopefully, will be able to find a little burst of speed to get you to the next checkpoint in time.

I still worry about being swept even though I've completed 7 half marathons. :rotfl:

So they warn you before sweeping you, that is good news. I have told my mom even if they tell us we might get swept, we know we can keep a 16 minute pace from the point they tell us (as long as we aren't injured...that might be tough).

I think the furthest I ever got with the twins was about 4 miles, good for you!

Thanks, Brookie! I don't think I would make it past 4 miles with two butts in the double stroller, either. My older boys are both 35 lbs each. That plus BOB is over 100 lbs. No, thank you! Now, just my little 17 lb baby alone in the double stroller, that I can manage!

Thanks again for the encouragement!!!!

I think it starts at 6? Not sure on the time to be there, either, so waiting for others' advice. :)

I am not running 10 miles... I don't plan on running this thing. Parts of it, yes, but certainly not the whole thing. I have been doing intervals on my short run (~3 miles) days. I started with walk 5, run 1 and am on walk 2, run 1 this week. Long run/walk, I run when it feels okay. I would say probably 1 min out of every 8-10, with a few 2 min intervals thrown in.

I am actually moving from being scared out of my mind to looking forward to the princess!! :goodvibes
LOL.. I hear you about the intervals.. that's what I HAVE to do... DH wonders why I'm not trying to run the whole thing... I actually have no desire to be able to run 13.1 miles :lmao: I just want to finish the darn thing at some kind of interval running. Right now I'm trying to decide what interval ould be the best for me... I've been running a 3r/1-2 min walk but I'm wondering if I shouldn't do a 1:1 ratio or a 2:1 ratio. I've started getting shin splints this week.. my short run last night of 3 miles was terrible... and I know the shins are because I'm adding mileage too quickly (2 weeks ago my long runs were 2 miles  now my short runs are 3 and my long run scheduled for this week is 7:scared:) so I'm thinking I'm going to slow down a bit and not stress too much about the time as about adding mileage. I know come race day I can do 3:2 intervals for the first half and stay around a 14 min pace, but I won't make it if I don't have the mileage base to build on. My biggest fear right now is getting injured and not even being able to run... second biggest fear is of course being swept.

I know it seems like everyone will be trying to get to the front of the last corral, but honestly that just doesn't occur to everyone. I told my friend (a 16 min miler) that we would line up as soon as the corrals open and she had no idea why I was suggesting that. This is so encouraging... I always think of the 16 min mile pace as being a cut-off... never think you can actually be going a 16 min mile and NOT be swept is encouraging. I guess we have to remember that not everyone is as well informed about the race as we DIS-sers get to be and so they don't know that the sweeping doesn't start until the last person crosses the finish line, so they won't be as concerned about getting right up front of their corral.

Kat, You are doing so great!! 10 Miles at a 13.4 pace is awesome!!! Treadmill or no treadmill, that is a fabulous pace for someone who just started training in Jan:cheer2:

Did my long day yesterday of 7 miles (on the TM) - maintained a 13:45 pace - doing a walk/run of a 1:1 ratio - toe is still sore - can't believe how sore it still is after a month!!!! But, other than that i feel good.. This was the longest i have been able to do since hurting my toe..so, i'll take it!

Great job!!! That's a great pace! Hope your recovery continues to improve... it's it amazing how long it can take the body to heal? I sprained my ankle right after Christmas and it still isn't completely healed... crazy how long some of these things take!
Was there a huge line of people waiting to get into the Expo last year? it's looking like our best time to get there will be first thing Friday morning or right before they close Friday evening.. trying to decide what time we're going to head over.

I have been lurking for a little while, and taking time to read through the thread and I want to thank you all for your inspiration. Welcome!! I'm also overweight... I'm 5'6 and 180 pounds... and I didn't start training until about 2 weeks ago, although I'd been running off and on since October. If you start training now you'll be ready by next year... just decide to do it and keep your eye on the goal. Start slow and take your time.. you'll even find that you probably loose some weight in the process!

Aurora, I am over 200 lbs at 5'8", and the only exercise I did from Aug-Dec was 1 ice hockey game a week. I have never ever been a runner, although I have definitely been in better shape than this. I agree with this 100%... running is an amazing "sport" and it's so great to see yourself improving over time and accomplishing goals you never thought you could!

Wow.. that's great!! These types of thing were my excuses when I started training for this race back in Aug... My DH worked either nights from 8pm-8am or days from 4am-2pm so I used the excuse that I hated running at night... so we got me a jogging stroller.. then I used the excuse that it was too wide to push down the streets (no sidewalks). You are my inspiration to get back outside once it warms up here.. you will be SO much stronger because of these runs with your baby, wait until you run without BOB you'll have gotten so much faster!
GREAT job!:cheer2:

I think I read on one of the chat transcripts that all host hotels will have the food courts open at 3am so that racers can get coffee/snacks before leaving for the race... not positive about that, but I could swear that's what I remember reading.

Welcome... and enjoy your solo trip:goodvibes Solo trips are great.. you can do what you want, when you want and don't have to think about someone else not enjoying what you want to do!

Time for me to go get some exercise in before my baby girl wakes up.... hope everyone has a great day!!:goodvibes

I know fro marathon weekend, all the resorts cafe's opened at 2 am. I would think the host hotels shoudl do the same for Princess.

Welcome to the thread, Andrea! This is a great thread, everyone is very encouraging. Please join in the conversation so we can encourage you as well! ;)

My name is also Andrea, and I will also be enoying my first solo trip while there. :thumbsup2

Shhh! Let's not tell anyone about our little secret! :ssst:
