Official Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend - The Dark Side 2017

I am looking into possibly signing up for either the Half or the Challenge since they are still open and I am kind of exploring ideas for a runcation next spring. I've only run runDisney events during Marathon Weekend and have a few questions for anyone with knowledge:

-I know it's possibly during a spring break period and that those crowds can be quite daunting so I'm wondering how were the crowds in 2016?
-Are all of the resorts host resorts like during Marathon Weekend?
-If you've been to both does the atmosphere differ for this race as opposed to Marathon Weekend or are they quite similar?
-Was the course for each of the races nice? What type of characters and course entertainment was there?
-I may be going solo, how is the experience of doing an rD race on your own?

This is still in the very fledgling stages of planning but I was hoping to get a little bit of a feel for what I'd be getting into. I appreciate any and all guidance on these issues or anything else that you may think is relevant. Thanks.

1. I'm doing the vacation part after the race and that week after the races looks very manageable for crowds.

2. As far as I know, all Disney owned resorts are host resorts.

3. I've only ran Wine & Dine at WDW, so I can't speak to how Dark Side compares to marathon weekend.

4. Expect the characters in a Star Wars race weekend to be exclusively from Star Wars. It's always been this way at Disneyland for the Star Wars 1/2 on the west coast. The Star Wars 1/2 at Disneyland has a cosplay mile around mile 8 where a lot of cosplayers are dressed in a wide variety of Star Wars costumes from prominent characters that everybody knows to characters from Star Wars novels and comics that only those fans who have read those items know about.

5. I've essentially run all 5 of my runDisney events solo. While my little sister also ran the 2011 Disneyland 1/2 with me, she was substantially faster than me and we knew beforehand that I would run my race and she would run hers. So we waited in the corral together and shortly after the race started she took off like a flash and I never saw her again until after the race.

Pros:

You have complete and total control of your agenda. You can stay for as little or as long as you like at the Expo. Likewise, any pre race preparations the night before are completely up to you. You don't have to worry about others in your party waking you up if they come in after staying in the parks while you go back to the room to get to bed early. Same thing applies on race morning. You are in complete control. You can linger in the post race area for as long or as little as you want to.

This also applies to any post race park touring. You can tour as actively or as relaxed as you want to. If you want to sit down on a bench for 20 minutes, no one will stop you. If you want to wait in line to show Mickey your medals, no one will complain that they want to go on a ride instead of waiting to meet a mouse. Or if you want to watch Path of the Jedi 3 times because it's air conditioned and you get to sit down, no one will complain.

Cons:

If you're used to running with someone and want to stop for a photo, you'll need to ask another runner. Likewise, you may have no one to keep you company while you wait in the corral for the race to start. In the post race area, if you're solo then you'll need to find someone to take any pictures you may want to. As noted above, some of the pros have equally opposite cons.

For the 2012 Wine & Dine 1/2, I met up with some fellow DISers from the race thread and we just talked for about an hour before the race. It was a lot of fun and a nice way to pass the time and distract myself from any nerves before the start of the race. For me, running is a highly individual activity anyways so running solo doesn't bother me. My little sister is once again joining me for the 2017 Star Wars 1/2 at Disneyland. And we already understand that we are each running our own race and starting in different corrals if necessary.

I'm running Darkside for the first time so can't compare, but the 10k & half course will be different next year. They are starting on Floridian Way & ending at Epcot versus how they started at Epcot & ended at ESPN this year. My parents ran the 5k & 10k and enjoyed it as their first Rundisney weekend ever.

The 501st was out for the 10k & half so besides the Disney star wars characters hopefully they'll be out again. No other characters besides Star Wars. The biggest thing I heard about was the long lines for the backdrop star wars characters before & after the race, they had some pretty elaborate setups but closed off the line fairly early before races. So, my plan next year is to get their early early for those if they still do them. And on course they had like speeder bikes & the Emperor's throne chair.

With booking our room, room rates were higher the week before the race weekend due to it being the week after Easter, then after the race weekend rates go down. A lot of Spring Breaks are in March or before Easter, but they'll still be Easter crowds.

The pre race setups were awesome. After hearing about the problems at the 10k, DH and I decided to drive ourselves to the half and got there at 2:30. It was a ghost town and we were able to get them all in. It was insanely early but so worth it and I didn't feel like I needed to stop during the race (it was my first half so I was nervous about time). They also moved them to WWoS so people could get pictures after they finished but I am not sure how the lines were there. The one photo stop I wish I would have taken advantage of was the Wampa cave, where they made you look like you were hanging from the ceiling. I so regret that one but the line was pretty long.

I loved that the 501st was there but I thought they had them in really bad spots. They had so much room in the parking lots I don't understand why they put them at the top of the hill near Fantasmic and as you were leaving the park at AK. They were tight spots.

Thanks for your thoughts. Short sleeve running shirts and maybe no more costume than a lightsaber it is then. I'm also definitely a slower runner. My corral "dream" if you will is to be placed in a corral higher than the last one. Ever since my first race I understand why corral placement matters to runners. At this year's Light Side 10K, I was in the second to last corral and the start of the race was brutal. Way too slow, even for me. My family and friends were surprised at my negative split, but I knew it was because once the crowds dispersed, I was able to go faster. During the 1/2 the next day, I ran what I consider to be my PR and started in corral C. I should note that I define PR differently than others. Technically, my first ever 1/2 is my PR. But that race had zero stops whatsoever. Every race since then has had multiple photo stops and have all been within 11 minutes of my first time of 3:05. This year I ran the 1/2 in 3:06 including quite a few character stops.

I'm hoping that some of the feedback they got last year about the starts of the races and the super slow pace will bring some changes this year. I'm also what I consider a slow runner having really just started this year. Everything I've read here has been really helpful in inspiring me to keep up the speed simply so that I can get in that better corral.

I thought it was hotter and definetly more humid at Darkside. I didn't think it was too bad until the last hour (I started in H and am a slower runner) But I'm also a Floridian so I'm use to running in the heat.
Also a Floridian here, used to running in heat indexes over 100... I thought the weather was just about perfect for Dark Side! I gushed about how great it was to some northern friends who also ran it... um, they had a very different take on it, lol! I

No worries about spring break: that busiest time ends a week or two before the race. It's not a slow time of year (are they any of those anymore?!). but it won't be spring break level crowds.

Yes, all resorts are Hosts.

Really different atmosphere, IMO. Marathon weekend, to me, feels very focused on athleticism and competition - it's quite running-centric. Dark Side was aaalllll about the theme. I hate expos with a passion, but I chilled at the Dark Side expo for hours, just geeking out on all of the Star Wars-y stuff! Those are my two favorite race weekends and I honestly like them equally, but for very different reasons.

Oy. Well, best not to judge the courses by this year's experiences, I think - because rD has already made changes to fix what went badly wrong. So focusing on what went right... I personally loved that it was all very Star Wars themed, not standard Disney themeing. Having the cosplayers on course was fantastic, as were the scene sets for photos. Even mile markers were fun. SW music being played in lots of places. Jumbotrons set up on course with SW movie clips playing. I did hear quite a few people who aren't big SW fans say they were disappointed that it seemed to be all SW and not much Disney, so if SW isn't your thing, you could be disappointed. If SW is your jam, you're in for a treat!

I usually have a bunch of friends running rD races, but I often do the actual race running solo - and I think it's great! There's alwyas someone to chat with in the corrals or along the course, so you're never truly alone if you don't want to be.

I am at 180 days out so I was able to get all of my choices for ADRs this morning. I just returned from WDW on Sunday, so it helped to start planning for Dark Side immediately.
While reading your post I realized that my family and I are almost at the same point. Our SWDS weekend is 4/20-4/25, so we have just a few more days until we can start booking our ADR's, but you've got me so excited now! As well as scared that I need to start pouring it on in the training department...just six months to go is crazy!

That's good to know. My 180 day mark is Sunday so I'm getting up in the middle of the night to get those ADRs. From what I've seen, my top choice restaurants have plenty of availability for days I could register for if I was going a couple days before my window opens so that's encouraging.

Mine opens tomorrow morning and I just realized I left my list of wanted ADRs at work yesterday. I'm at home today with a sick kid. Welp... Guess I have to plan it all over again. As a planner, this is my drug.

Ooorrrr, while the kids rest or are watching toons, or something- sit down yourself and try to regenerate your list. Maybe get the kids involved to get their minds off being sick. I must admit, I'm not above calling work and asking someone I trust to look for it to read off to me.

I mostly remember it. And honestly, redoing it is probably something I would have done tonight anyway as I second guess choices or shift things around. I could ask someone to go through my notebook at work where I have the list too :)

4am tomorrow is going to come so soon!

I'm having the when to eat where debate right now. Trying to keep one of my favorites as the final meal of the trip, but not wanting to risk having to lose it if the Star Wars Galactic Spectacular hits that same night.

I know well this conundrum. I put my favorites on nights I knew wouldn't work for the fireworks.

Just done all my ADRs for breakfast/brunch for our holiday! We're a weird lil bunch who love a good breakfast! 6 months and counting!

Yes! I was so happy I could book California Grill for brunch after the half. Time for some fancy lady brunching after some fancy lady running!

We decided on Narcoosees after the half. Never been before or to California grill, will have to save that for another run ;)

Ultimately we picked CG because of the bloody mary bar set up for brunch. I wish both restaurants did brunch on more than one day a week so that we didn't have to choose :)

Question:

My husband and I are doing the 10k before meeting up with our kids on a band trip.
But before we jump back into parent mode, we want food!

Since the race ends at epcot, I have two thoughts.
We could jump on the monorail and head to one of the MK area breakfasts but that might take longer. So perhaps a 9:00-ish reservation? Thinking 1900 or crystal palace.

But then I thought we could just walk back into Epcot and do Garden Grill, and hit up soaring when we're done there before we head back for showers. (Lol yes, I know! But we routinely stop for breakfasts after our weekend runs and do clean up some first.)
So my question then is what's a reasonable time for the adr? 8:30? 8:00? So hard to figure out but being right at Epcot anyway should help, right?

So I don't think the chances of doing the Dark Side Challenge are very high. I looked at flights for Sunday, and the prices are outrageous. I already have flights booked for Spring Break from Saturday-Saturday. Maybe I'll register for the 10K through a travel provider instead if it's available since I may need a hotel. If it's not, then maybe I'll
do the 5K.
