Official Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend 2016 Thread (Jan. 14-17, 2016)

runDisney got me again. I told myself that I was only going to do the half this year but when it came time to register my finger magically went to the RC. Can't wait till January!!

The Force works in mysterious ways! I too somehow felt the urge to sign up for the RC. :darth:

Where is everyone planning on staying this time?

We did Paradise Pier last year so we're going to give Grand Californian a try this year.

I have bookings at the carousel and Park pplace. I will choose one after I get registered on the 16th.

Because of professional obligations, my exercise completely stopped after the Star Wars 1/2 in January. it's always that way, so when I get back into it, it's always back to square one. So the other day during my run, I thought of two scenes from two different Star Wars movies and replaced one of them with Rebel Challenge. If you're familiar with them, you'll quickly see how they apply to runDisney.

First in Attack of the Clones aka Episode II:

Do you want to run a 10K and a 1/2 on back to back days?

Obi-Wan: You don't want to run a 10K and 1/2 on back to back days. You want to go home and rethink your life.

I don't want to run a 10K and 1/2 on back to back days. I want to go home and rethink my life.

Second one reflects the reality of the situation since there are no refunds comes from Return of the Jedi:

Darth Vader: It is too late for me.

So there you have it. Star Wars related humorous thoughts during my first training session. For whatever reason, dark humor about running somehow makes it easier. I'm also partial to Star Trek's Worf saying "today is a good day to die" when I don't feel like training because I'm tired.

Where is everyone planning on staying this time?

We did Candy Cane last year, trying Alpine this time. The review seem like it's good enough, which is all I want for this.

I'd like to stay at the Disneyland Hotel when it's warm enough to swim. We'll save that for a springtime race!

We stayed at the Anabella last year and liked it. Room was spacious and very nice. Free breakfast was good too. Parking is tight, but once you have a spot, you don't have to move!

We've definitely liked them. Only time I booked it with breakfast, we couldn't participate for some reason, can't remember why. So we just book the basic Mission suite (I think).

My goal was to be nearish the start line.

Where is the start line? I'm looking at hotels now and that is my goal.

Has anyone ever flown on Spirit airlines? They have an amazing non-stop price from Atlanta to LAX - just wondering if I'll get what I pay for??? We usually fly Southwest but they don't have their flights up for the dates needed.

Also - Spirit has a good package price if I book the Hotel Menage - any experience staying here?

TIA!

@samc make sure you do some research. I have never flown with them but I am pretty sure I just heard that Spirit Airlines got the lowest customer satisfaction ratings recently - I think part of the issue is that they are a la carte in a way. So their flight prices are pretty low, but you then pay additional for carry-on bags, the ability to pick your seat, etc.

I just Googled "Spirit Airline reviews" or something similar...lots of 1-star ratings pop up.

Yikes! That what I was afraid of - thank you so much!!

Looking at this year's map, I'd expect the start to be along Disneyland Dr and the finish to be in the DLH parking lot.

Anabella is on Katella right next to Disneyland Dr, so that works for us.

Hotel Menage is across the highway NORTH of DL. If you were walking, you'd leave DL and go north on Harbor, up and over the highway, and then you're at your hotel. Not a trek I'd want to make, especially not for the race!

Spirit charges for EVERYTHING, and they are so small that if a flight is delayed or cancelled, you have no other options.

Thank you! I found some comparable prices on better airlines - as long as we fly Atlanta to LAX. We live in Alabama & would rather fly B'ham to Orange Co - so, not ideal but at half the price. :)

Sounds like hotels to the south & east of DL would be the best.

If you go in with the right attitude spirit can be fine. Upgrade to the big seats in front and you have a nice comfy ride. Pick up drinks when you get through security at the airport and consolidate your stuff into one checked bag and one carry on...or just the carry on if you can get away with it. Take a backpack or a big tote as your personal item.

I think most people get annoyed because they don't expect it to be so no frills. But we flew them from Atlanta to Miami to Medellin and were fine. Some grumbled...but again go in informed and your good.

We walked from the Candy Cane to the start corral in front of Disneyland Hotel. It wasn't very far in my opinion. You may want to check it out on google maps to see how far that is exactly. There was a lot of pedestrian traffic to the start of the race, it was great walking in with so many other people who where there for the same event!

I have reservations at the new Homewood Suites (opening in November) which is right next to the Toy Story parking lot. Does anyone know if they run buses from the outer lots for the races? If not I may change to PP just for convenience sake.

The only transportation that might be run (going from DL Half last year) is ART. That doesn't run from the lots. As far as I know there are no trams from the parking lots to the start lines.

ETA: I could be wrong! But all I saw mentioned for transportation last Labor Day was ART.
