Official Seattle information thread Updated 5/28/2014-Oso update

I didn't realize this hasn't been posted but yes, we are planning to do this. We waited in the 70's and never got in when it came to New Orleans. Dh is very excited about this.
I just noticed something shockingly absent from this thread. During the entire time the Wonder will be sailing out of Seattle this year, and continuing until January 6th of next year, an exhibit of artifacts from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun (typically referred to as King Tut) will be on display at the Pacific Science Center.

The Pacific Science Center is fascinating to visit on any normal day, but this exhibit will be particularly worthwhile if you are interested in ancient Egypt. If you want to go on a weekend day, I would strongly recommend buying tickets before you come out here or you may find they are sold out for the day you want to visit. That has happened to me with other touring displays they have hosted, even though I am a member!

If you are a member of another science center or museum that is an ASTC member, you can get into the Pacific Science Center for free so you'll only need exhibit tickets.

Good catch! I know I'm *so* excited about this exhibit (we are locals--across the Sound) and sometimes I forget the obvious when talking about things to do with visitors. Then again, my own husband had no idea about the exhibit. That shocked me! :confused3

Visiting the King Tut exhibit (and the rest of the Pacific Science Center) and the Chihuly Glass Garden that will be opening at the Seattle Center would be a great day trip--or partial day trip.

Some area hotels are offering combo packages with King Tut tickets and overnight stays.

If you want to see this exhibit I would not wait to buy tickets, especially if you only have one day to choose from. They've been selling advanced tickets for months and everyone and their mother is planning on going.

I know the feeling - I didnt hear about the Gauguin exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum until it was almost over! Bellingham isn't far from Seattle - why does the news travel so slowly?

This actually was one of the first things I mentioned in an old thread. I totally forgot until yesterday to add it here until I got my mail yesterday about it. Will be updating it today.

Could everyone look over the beginning pages and if you see something that should be added to those, send me a PM (King Tut is already on the list)

I would like to get everything on there that needs updating this week as I am going to start adding things to the Miami port thread.

A huge thanks to everyone from the Seattle area that has made this thread so informative that a thread on Miami (like this one!) was requested. Since I grew up in Miami- I'm attempting to tackle it.

We could not have done it without the help of everyone that contributed- I was just the organizer of the info.

Does anyone have any experience with this hotel? We are looking at staying here for four nights prior to our August cruise. Does anyone know what would be nearby? Thanks so much for any feedback.

The Edgewater is a lovely hotel, from what I've heard (I haven't stayed there) and right on the waterfront. It's near the ferries to the islands and the fast ferry to Victoria, a great restaurant called Anthony's, the Seattle Aquarium, and, if you take the elevator through the parking garage, Pike Place Market. It's also close to the Olympic Sculpture Garden

Also, a short walk from Pike Place Market is Westlake Center, where you can take the monorail to Seattle Center, and go to the Space Needle, Ride The Ducks, the Pacific Science Center, the EMP, the Children's Museum, and the Chihuly Gardens and Glass.

Thanks for letting me know about the King Tut exhibition. We just purchased tickets for our family the day before our cruise departure!

I posted this question on the Vancouver thread and was directed to try this one instead. any help would be appreciated.

"We are looking to cruise next September and will be flying into Seattle a couple of days early. we want to rent a Jeep Wrangler and drop it off in Vancouver - but cant seem to find a rental agency that offers this specific vehicle with these pick up and drop off locations.

i was thinking since this area is known for its "outdoorsiness" that this wouldn't be a problem. any locals know anywhere i could check?"

Not sure where you are driving but there is no need for a jeep. Just rent a regular car.

I don't know of any rental firms offering Wranglers, and I have never seen a rental agreement that would allow off-road use so I don't see any need for a Jeep.

Just wanted to comment on the new ferris wheel.

When I first heard about this, I rolled my eyes at such a clear tourist trap sort of thing.

Then, today I drove by where it will be, and I changed my mind. The struts for the wheel are in place (and, wow, that thing is going to be big), and it's in such a perfect place between the aquarium and the building with the Ol Curiosity Shop. I'll probably wait until a nice day in the fall to go on it (I like to avoid crowds), but I will be going on it!

...and nice scheduling, Disney!

I was looking at the port schedule for this year, and with one exception, The Wonder is always the only cruise ship in port on Mondays.

The once exception is July 9th when THE WORLD is in port at the dock by the market.

Jeeps really aren't big out here. Subarus yes, Jeeps no.

True. I see hardly any jeeps in Seattle. At least 10 people on our block have Subarus though. They are much better cars than the crap that Jeep sells.

how funny our eastcoast thoughts about the pacific northwest. i just assumed jeep wranglers would be a big deal out there. i have never driven one and just thought it would be fun. actually owned a subaru before - great car. would still like to see about getting a wrangler, but definitely don't have to have it.

at our old house in north Seattle, on a short block, there were 5 Subarus on the street every night. We are on our 2nd right now.

The true Seattle car

We will be going on the July 9th cruise. I hope to be able to drive by the port where "The World" ship is to get a look at it. If I ever hit the Powerball, I may have to splurge on a cabin.
