OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I registered yesterday for the marathon relay with a friend's daughter. Very excited to have another Disney race on my calendar. Also, the medal is super cool!

Got to run after work yesterday around 5:30 PM and it was 73 degrees. Holy cow! What a difference when its 25 degrees hotter outside. It was actually enjoyable. I look forward to more training days like that ahead.
 
So I know that there is WDW transportation from Dolphin (minus ME) to the parks... does it also have transportation to the races? If not, I assume I could pop over to the Boardwalk or YC bus stop?

Found Dolphin for under $200/night and seriously thinking about it since we will likely fly into Sanford and have to rent a car anyway.

Yes, they have transportation. I stayed at The Swan for the 2011 marathon.
 

I called today for a room reservation and was able to use my AAA card for a 20% discount at the Yacht Club. I thought that was a terrific deal, especially since the marathon price is the same as the regular rack rates. I would normally stay at the Caribbean Beach, but our group wanted a nicer place. I'm not sure if AAA will work for other properties but thought it would be good to let people know.

Why is it the same??? For the Princess it was like 30% off and there were deals on the park tickets! I know this weekend is more popular, but still... holding out for AP rates, but looking for a back-up so I am going to call about the AAA rate! Thanks!
 
For the Princess I got the 40% off email that was targeted to some people...not sure why, but I was able to change the booking to the better rate. I hope there are some additional discounts, but I am pleased with the 20% off at the moment.
 
I know they mention the 14 min. mile, but I was under the impression the Bridge closes at 1:15 no matter what. So, I will have to hope they start on time and there are no organizational glitches? Since it's run by Marines, I probably shouldn't stress about glitches! I'm trying not to worry about that - but you know how that goes. I have completed a successful 16 miler, so I'm not so worried about The Gauntlet. However, I seemed to have crashed at that point - and doing 10 more seems very rough. I know this will change as I build up my mileage, but it still stresses me out! I MUST BEAT THE BRIDGE!

The bridge does close at 1:15 no matter what, but that's 5 hours and 15 minutes after the first start. Last year, the last runner crossed the starting line at 8:29, so that gave them 4 hours and 46 minutes to get to the bridge. A 14 min/mile pace takes 4 hours and 40 minutes to get to the bridge (mile 20), so there's 6 minutes to spare. Even more than that if you're not the last runner across the line. :)

The other races take place during peak (or at least slightly busy) times where the race isn't the only reason why people are at Disney - so they effectively treat the runners of those races like a group or a convention and give discounts.

Marathon weekend, pretty much the ONLY people that are down there are there for the race and disney knows that - they use the race to lure people down there in what would otherwise be a dead time of year. So they dont give discounts because the weekend especially gets crowded without them (discounts are based on supply exceeding demand)

You could still get lucky though, they did have some discounts last year if you watched for them!
 
Training for the full marathon was really going well, but now I think I over did it. Several weeks ago, I walked/run a slow 20 miles. All was well on the run, in general I felt good afterwards, but later that afternoon, I went for a walk and the sharp pains set in. It is in my left foot, kind of in the arch and up over the inside of my ankle. I had to limp off the trail.

I took it easy for the next week- no running- then was in a 10 K - to try to get my 11:27 proof of time! Well, in mile three, the pain was back again, only this time at least I was able to run through it, no sharp pains, but was sore afterwards.(Needless to say, I didn't get my proof of time!)

Another week of rest (only two 1.5 miles runs). I saw a doctor, got an x-ray, nothing broken at least. He gave me some kind of gel to put on the affected area - doesn't seem to help much. He didn't say I needed to restrict my running, and wrote me a script for a physical therapist. But every time I run, around mile 2-3, the discomfort starts. I did manage to run a half marathon yesterday. I made it to mile 6 and then had to walk over 50% of the remainder of the race. (I know rest would probably have been good, but I really wanted to run that particular half maration!)

I am now wondering if I should change my race registration to the Disney half marathon, becase I really cannot imagine being able to do the several 20+ mile runs in training before the full marathon. Or maybe I should still plan for the full? I have no idea how long recovery could be.

So disappointing. I never thought I would miss running so much, but I do! I even miss the exhausting training runs. I want to get this foot healed so I can suffer some more in training. :laughing:

You have lots of time to get healthy and still get your training in. I have done one of my Goofy's with long day of only 10 miles(before the race I had surgeries on my left knee in Jan and March). The more miles the easier it is but the most miles I have ever done for any of my Goofy's is 16 miles.

I would trust quality over quantity. Training plans are a guide and not a bible. Sometimes people blindly follow them and thus leading to injuries.

Well, I ran my first official race EVER yesterday, a 5K which was hilly. I did it in 36:02. While I know it wasn't very fast, I was really pleased with how I did and that I ran the whole thing. Before May 1, I wouldn't run if you were chasing me. Although I'm psyched about it, it does make me realize I still have a lot of work to do before the 1/2. I'm thinking of doing another 5k and a 10k in october, and a 15K in november to start a progression.
 
Went to the doctor today, just a small ankle strain! Just have to rest and I'll be good to go :) Thanks for the help guys!

Thanks guys, I'm going to go get it checked out just to make sure. My dad has really bad knees, so maybe I'll get those checked out too to see if I will have the same problems...I always try to be careful running because of those genetic issues. Nothing will keep me from running the Relay though! Maybe it will just keep me from running the Donald too :( We will see, thanks for the info guys!

Trying to figure out if I'm getting too wrapped up in the time per se and should just concentrate on finishing in front of the sweeper without needing oxygen at the end. First one ever and really want to finish this thing without too much stress.

It's been great following along with everyone else on this common journey.

Just relax and have a good time. Everyone who crosses the finish line gets the same medal. If it's your first race, your time will be a personal best no matter what--and then you can worry about beating that *next* year!

I'm doing the half....baby steps!!

We'll have to try to run into one another. I know we're book ending the race with some WDW time with our nephew so we'll be pretty busy but I'm sure we can figure something out.

I'm not one to give up when I put my mind to something so I'm sure I'll be fine but the more real this thing gets the more nervous I get. This is a long time goal I'm trying to cross off the list.
