OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

PS. I made it ten miles on Weds. It was the first time I hit the double digits. Looks like there's a chance I can actually do this.

Of course you can do this! Once you've run 10 miles, there's no reason you can't do a half! :thumbsup2

Way to go!! :cheer2: This weekend's long run is 9 or 9.5 miles. Eek! You must be very excited to have moved beyond the double digit mark!!!

I'm doing 16 miles on my own tomorrow! I hope I have the strength and willpower to follow through with it!

I'm doing my first 16 ever tomorrow! I'm nervous and excited. Just know there's at least one other DISer doing it with you. :)

We all have firsts tomorrow.:cheer2: I'm doing my first ever 20 miler! I'm trying for under 3 & 1/2 hours, but will take just finishing it!

Just popping in to congratulate everyone on their training. It's so exciting and very motivating to watch people achieve new goals. Keep up the great work--you will all shine in January!

Hi everyone,

I'm flying over from the UK for the Goofy, only two months to go :scared1::scared1:

I only managed to get my wife and daughter to let me go without them by promising to get as many new character signatures as possible.

I know that there are many character photo ops on the way round but do these characters do autographs as well ?

Thanks in advance and good luck with the training. I did my first 20 miler on Friday and I'm still pretty stiff.

Liam

Liam: Welcome. I can't help you with the autographs, because this will be my first Goofy also. My family would never let me go to Disney without them. Once I decided on this, they were making vacation plans!

aaddavis: That mere 3ish miles is more than most people can do. Getting up and starting is more than most can do. Be proud of yourself! :thumbsup2 I hope some veterans can give you some parking advice.

I did it! I ran my first 20 miles. I was doing awesome until mile 18. Then, all the pains I had been able to ignore up until that point just overtook me. But, I didn't walk at all. I got it done in 2:59:45! :cheer2: Just a little hint to all the newbie runners. Never run 20 miles in a brand new pair of shoes. Bad idea! I will have some lovely blisters for awhile. And, I know better.

I hope everyone elses long runs are going well today.

Well I did a 5K+ today (3.56 miles)....first event since the WIne & DIne Half...and trying to improve times for Jan Half....a balmy 30 degrees this morning!
I shaved off 7:10 from my 5K split time last mth...my pace was 10:32!!!! Compared to walking the Half last month...I feel great!!

The breathing of the cold air gets to me though....dont know how they all did last year! Just happy I booked the Race Retreat already...dont want to freeze...just in case...and I am so not a morning person!

Thanks for the encouragement! And congrats to everybody hitting those training milestones. Way to go!

Today was to have been a 5 mile 3:2 run. Well, with dodging groups and people taking pictures around the NYC Marathon finish area and my warm-up and cool-down it ended up being 6. I did learn NOT to do Yoga Meltdown Level 2 the day before a run because my butt and upper hamstrings don't like the combination. LOL.

Tomorrow it's all about working the Mile 24 water station in the NYC Marathon!!! SOOOO excited!!!!

Congrats on your first 20! Do some yoga.

To answer your question about the character autographs on the marathon courses: no, they won't. Autographs take up too much time and they try to keep the character lines moving as fast as they can for this since most people are worried about time. You'll need your own camera for the pictures as Photo Pass is not out on the course. There will be a CM with each character to take your pic's. They'll probably ask you to be ready before you reach the front of the queue, take the camera from you, snap the pic, hand the camera back and move on to the next person.

60 days left according to Disney's countdown timer. Good luck and see you there.

Thanks! It'll be my first time experiencing it beyond smiling at and giving up my subway seat for tired runners who've finished it.

I've already decided I'm entering the lottery for next year. And if I don't get it, I may well go the charity route! If I don't get in any way in 2011, I'll have a guaranteed entry in 2012 thanks to NYRR membership and their "run 9, volunteer 1" rule! Woot!

WDW's full in 2012 is also on the "to do" list!! This year will be my half debut!

I got in (through the International lottery) on my first attempt. I hadn't even run a marathon at that point! I did do a local one about 6 weeks before NYC (I didn't want NYC to be my first - especially since no one I knew had gotten in).

Such great crowd support (though *I* had to stand on the subway back to Union Square).

Awww. :( If I'd been in your car I would have given you my seat!

Only 9 weeks to go!

I'm really looking forward to getting down to Florida and finally participating in this event I've heard about for years.

Can anyone help me about parking?

We live in Orlando, so we're obviously not staying at a Disney Resort. Where should we park the day of the 5k? At the TTC and ride over to Epcot? Will parking be free?

This is our first time running anything! Wish me luck! It's only a mere 3ish miles but for our sedentary butts this will be rough. So far I can run about a mile without stopping and at a reasonable pace. So, that's something, right? Ha, better than a week ago...

First off.....congrats for entering the race! You will do great--just train slowly and steadily and don't forget to have fun at the race.

Next, as for parking.....Nothing is free at Disney--haven't we all learned that? :rotfl: I haven't done the 5k, but if it was me, I would park at Epcot. Since the race runs through the park and not onto the roads, you shouldn't have to worry about road closures and really early arrival time, but pay attention to the race instructions--they will give better details.

Good luck!

We went ahead and did 10 yesterday instead of the 9.5, and switched up the intervals. We had been trying to decide between a 3:1 or 2:1, but decided to try the 1:30. although at first it seemed like the invertals weren't long enough, once we got to miles 7+ I was sure liking the 1 min. interval!

When we did the 8 mile long run, we started at 3:1, and then adjusted to 2:1, and then even down to 1:1, I believe. since I'd like to be able to just set my garmin and not have to adjust the intervals, maybe the 1:30 is good. Does anyone else do a short interval like this?
