OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

I think that some people obsess more about WDW since it is an "away" race and does have more logisitic issues than many other races that people may have done previous. If you are doing a local race, you probably already know the route (even if you haven't actually run the whole thing). Plus, sleeping your own bed and driving to the race on that morning, seem less indimidating.

I read the 2010 book, to get a sense of the race - did staying a specific resort make a difference? Just how earlier was I going to have to get up on race-day (which might effect my ADR the night before)? Where could people cheer (again may effect resort choice)? Questions I don't generally have.

I know that when I did the NY marathon, I received race instruction earlier than 2 weeks pre-race (though the instructions came in installments), but that is another logistically challenging race.

Not saying the WDW needs to send out instructions earlier, just thinking about why people worry.

AND I Re-read my post and it was a little sharp.... that's what I get for trying to answer a series of posts in front of what I knew would be a contentious meeting…

Sorry folks for the tenor of the post. All I was really trying to say is that a lot of the recent questions can be answered through reading the race booklet. I am not trying to cut off the really cool questions about monorail, bus, meals, etc. Even when reviewing the entire series of e-mails from Disney along with the last minute instructions received from the mouse most of these answers are simply not answered. I think if you read 99.8% of my posts on this thread you see that Ispend lots of effort to fully answer these types of questions.

Charles, remember, work then fun…..

I didn't think your post was overly sharp, just thinking about the difference between this race and other races that people may have done.

I also wanted to point out ways that I had used the 2010 program to get some helpful information (which I thought other people may also find helpful).

Folks,

Rather than obsess about the race instructions and whether Disney should or should not issue them earlier, here is the race program from last year. 95%+ of the detail will remain the same. This will answer most questions.

Like Frank said, most races do not issue much in the way of instructions until 2 weeks pre-race.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link for all of us new people! I'll look forward to reading through this! :thumbsup2

Random question for those who wear their medals in the parks after the races.

How do you wear it without the lanyard irritating the back of your neck? :confused3 I have always seen people wearing them in DL after the races and wonder about this. My neck always gets scratchy and irritated.

Vaseline/Bodyglide

So today my sister-in-law and I registered for the half...originally I was going to go easy on myself and just do the Family Fun Run, with my family of course. Now the competitor in me has decided that's not enough so we're going to do it!
Just like planning a WDW trip I want to be fully informed so I am going to start at the beginning and make way through this thread!!
:woohoo:

Never thought of BodyGlide... not real sure how that would work with the Disney lanyard material - I wear a polo style shirt and run the lanyard under the collar

I've never had a problem with the lanyard rubbing or chafing, but wearing a collared shirt is a great idea to avoid any problems.

I wouldn't use bodyglide or Vaseline or any of those other anti-chafing products. They can destroy the very nice ribbons. Instead, I would advise wearing a jacket or a collared shirt to avoid any chafing issues. To be honest, I didn't have a problem with my neck with one medal. But, having the three on after the Disneyland Half got a bit tedious. So, the people in my party got to take turns wearing two of them. They loved bragging about how they had run the race...when in reality they were sleeping! :rotfl:

Don't know how to multi-quote  so I'll just say a big thank you to everyone who answered my question about race instructions :thanks:

Firedancer - a Man U fan hey, are from near my neck of the woods then?? DH is an Everton fan - don't want any of that rivalry going on during the marathon :rotfl:

No, I'm from the 'colonies' but have always loved soccer. Man U and Juventus are my clubs.

If you have to be a fan of a club in Liverpool the blue one is the the better choice (though stopage time last week was a little hard to stomach). They have our (USMNT) keeper after at least.

I saw that the princess 5k is going to be stroller friendly this coming year, does anyone know if the family 5k is? I am seriously considering doing Dopey, but I don't think DH could come so I would have to push the kiddos.

So maybe we should all wear our football club colors for one of the races in January. You guys will be wearing the wrong colors, but that's okay. One of us will get it right.

Yes, we don't mention the "other" Merseyside team  They actually have a 5K every year in Liverpool - reds v blues. I ran for the blues (of course, DH would have disowned me otherwise ;)), the reds won :headache:

No offense, but I hope that rumor isn't true. Strollers posses a serious danger to people racing.

It looks like the family fun run is stroller friendly...there is separate (more expensive) registration for the stroller division. My understanding from other threads is that they will be corralled separately from those who are running/walking the event.

on a side note...What is doing Dopey? I know Goofy is the half and full marathon...what makes up Dopey, I am already registered for the half and will be signing up my family for the 5K (once i get some time alone on my home computer...this trip is a surprise). TIA

We have a similar race in Cleveland for Ohio State vs. Michigan (college American football). In that race you want to be red, at least if you have any taste.

I've done some local races that allowed strollers and as long as they know what they are doing it isn't that big of a deal. Usually the people who have spent the money on a running stroller (I wouldn't do one with a standard stroller) and decide to do races with them are pretty serious runners so they know proper etiquette. One 5K I did the overall winner ran a sub 17:00 pushing his kid. Of course at a Disney race you will have more novices with them so starting them in the back makes sense for the family 5Ks.

It isn't an official race like the Goofy but the Dopey is doing the Friday 5K in addition to the Goofy. You sign up separately for the two (Goofy and 5K).
