Official Hurricane Thread - post info and concerns here - Please read first post

If you are doing a 4 day or a 3 day cruise (Bahamas), would there even be enough time to make it to the Caribbean? If they change ports, isnt that like a 6 hour drive?? I guess if they leave out of ft lauderdale, they could make it to the caribbean countries in 4 and 3 days. Wow, if they change ports, that will be a BIG inconvenience. Having a hurricane in that area will really give you rocky weather even if it isnt raining correct? I have no idea what to expect being on a cruise ship with a hurricane in the area. (Can you tell??)

They did extend a cruise once or twice by about 2 days as they could not get back to port due to the storm's path...thus shortening the following cruise.

But, no, they would not normally head to the caribbean if you were on a Bahamas cruise as there would not be enough time as you said.

In that case they may switch the day they visit CC or Nassau or skip the ports and just stay at sea and try and find good weather.

Loved the video. I have some great pictures but wow.

The memories are still so fresh and I'd do it all over again and will be cruising the dream in Oct 16,2011

We are going with the same group of 9 we went with last time with some 30 extras this time. Can hardly wait. I hate to wish another year bye but when it comes to a Disney Cruise. we can just Dream for a while longer.

I may have missed if they had to reroute the current routs do to the line up of hurricanes on the east coast?
Just curious where they might have went if they were? I have my cruise next year and thought well if we can't go to the Baham's and Castaway Cay I guess we might have to go to the western Caribbean? :confused3

We were on the wonder in nov and there was a hurricane. They just went around it. We had beautiful weather and still went to our ports. We were so worried we wanted to cancel the trip. I am so glad that we didn't. It only rained one day for and hour during the day and the rest of the weather was wonderful.

Don't worry. Disney will handle it.:thumbsup2

Thanks, I am not worried. As I'll be on the Disney Ship with magic all around. I was just wanting to know where some go "if" you can't go where you booked. That's cool they just went around it though. I am sure they want to make everyone's trip special. We went in Nov. a in 08 and because Costa Maya wasn't ready yet after a hurricane blew through we went to another port.

I think the Wonder went to Charleston, SC once to avoid a tropical storm or hurricane.

We were on the Magic in '99 when hurricane Floyd hit Florida. We were supposed to do a 3 day to the Eastern Carribean but went to Cozumel instead. Worked out really well!

Theres a lot of factors that go into where the ship goes, if a hurricane is near by.
Size of the storm is one, the bigger the storm is physically, the more the ship has to move to stay out of the way, smaller the storm not so much.
Wind speed is another, where the storm is in relation to the planned itinerary. If the storm is coming up from the south, it negates some things, if its not expected to reach by a certain day, or comes over from the gulf to the atlantic they might just rearrange stops or ignore it. Theres really no way to tell what DCL will do, until the ship is put in that situation. The only thingI can say is that DCL will do whatever they can to make sure that the trip is enjoyable.

The Captain will make a day by day decision based on the current location of any hurricanes or storms and their predicted track. On one sailing we missed one of the "saints" and went to Key West instead (before the Western existed). Easterns may become modified Westerns, ports may be added or altered. Cruises have been lengthened, shortened, and canceled because of storms, closed ports, etc. Disney did compensate for shortened cruises. The bottom line is that if you can be flexible, you'll have a great cruise. If you are the type of person who needs to know where you will be each day and doesn't like change, this may not be the season for you to sail.

The best info on Earl and all the storms can be found at the link below.

I merged a few of the hurricane threads....we don't need several on the same topic.

This will be the official hurricane thread.....we have had just too many threads on the basically the same subject.

If any info comes out about DCL changing any itineraries due to hurricanes we will start a INFO ONLY thread so people can find out info quickly, but in the meantime use this thread for discussion of hurricanes.

Thanks.

Hurricanes are always possible when cruising but do not worry about it. DCL would never sail into a hurricane ! Worst case is that they will alter their itinerary. For example they could change a Western Caribbean into an Eastern Caribbean cruise or they could simply alter their ports. This very rarely happens however. In any case you should have absolutely no worries about hurricanes.

The worst effects of a hurricane we noticed were AFTER the hurricane passed through. We went to CC in 2004 a few weeks after (I think) first Frances and then Jeanine hit the Bahamas hard. We didn't experience the hurricanes themselves, just their after effects.

There was still a lot of damage to the island. Not the structures, but many palm trees were stripped bare, a lot of plants etc were ruined, and the beaches were hit hard - there seemed to be a lot of erosion, and there was a great deal of sand loss. Seemed like snorkeling was awful as well.

Things were cleaned up as well as could be expected, but it was a little sad as CC just wasn't as beautiful as it usually is.
