Thanks for the responses concerning the plans! My plan calls for no PR for any race. Just finish in a somewhat reasonable fashion and in the upright position. I agree that Higdon's plan does seem to have a ton of mileage just starting at week 1 and I am hesitant to follow it because its just so much running (but who am I kidding...I did just sign up for Dopey). I have found that I do a lot better during training if I have something that I can go by each week instead of just winging it like I did a few years ago so I was curious to what worked well for people.
Personally, I used Higdon's plan for Dopey in 2016 (altered slightly based on travel and other races) and it worked out incredibly well for me. I was just coming off a half marathon when registration opened, so I started my plan the week of registration and ran my 13-mile Week 1 long run in April as my second-ever half marathon and then just repeated between Weeks 2 and 3 until it was time for the plan to start.
It IS a lot of mileage - but by November, I ran a PR 10K (by about 15 minutes) and a PR 10-miler that is my current standing PoT for ALL races. I ran the 5K of Dopey in a RunDisney PR time for me, and nearly overall PR'd the 10K before I realized I was being a dummy and still had two races left to go.
I'm attaching my training plan, if you're curious! @FFigawi helped me modify it to suit my training needs.
