For our next trip in April, I reserved an Illuminations Cruise for my wife's birthday. Plan is to keep it a surprise until the day of. I would also like to have a cake ready for the cruise and it sounds like the Yacht Club Private Dining handles that. Looking through Lurkyloo's listings of cakes available for this location, in addition to custom cakes there are 6, 8, and 10-inch "generic" cakes available. What do these cakes look like? Do they have options for any minor customizations/personalizations?

A custom cake is an option I'm still considering, but have to be honest, other than knowing how to eat one, I have absolutely no clue or knowledge about cakes :rotfl: So the thought of trying to order a custom cake or come up with an idea for a cake is a bit overwhelming and hence I'm looking at the more simplified options first. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :goodvibes

We just got back and our friends got a podium cake from La Hacienda, ad EPCOT, and it was really good. It was moist and yummy, had strawberries and blueberries on top with some sort of yummy glaze and the plate and cake had a light drizzle of honey on it. I didn't get pictures but it far exceeded my thoughts of what a podium cake would look and taste like.

Think of a very nice-looking supermarket cake, with piping around the edges and buttercream flowers. Each bakery changes it up a bit, but that's the general idea. You can usually customize the cake with writing (if not on the cake then at least on the plate) or a screen print. For a list of the standard flavors available, click HERE.

If you don't have any preference about the appearance or have your heart set on an unusual flavor, I think you'll be perfectly happy with a standard cake from the Yacht & Beach Club. No need to add even more stress to planning! :goodvibes

Mexico is one of the pavilions that gets its cakes from an outside bakery, not Epcot's, which is why your cake was so much better than the one we got at Coral Reef. So glad to hear you had a great experience! :thumbsup2

I just got back a few days ago. I ordered a 6" cake to be delievered to Cinderella's Royal table. I just got their standard decorations, and requested to have dark purple roses, and also for the cake to be funfetti. It came to be $32 with tip I believe, or somewhere close to that. I thought that the cake was very good, and enjoyed the leftovers for the rest of the trip. I only have one picture of it on my work computer.

i just ordered a cake for DD's birthday at California Grill. it almost seemed too easy and now i'm worried. she wants this one: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=34141170&postcount=131

i asked for the stretching room portraits that stand up and then tombstones in front of them. i said we'd seen a picture. she said, "Brian will know what you are talking about."

she asked me what flavor cake, but not filling (which is fine, we don't need filling). but now i'm worried. it all seemed too easy and that she didn't ask that much. i see so many posts about going back and forth via email.

it was $85. that honestly doesn't seem that high to me (considering i've paid twice that [locally] in a moment of weakness). oh well. it's out of my hands now. but i'm nervous.

i had actually dreamed that i forgot to order the cake and then was scrambling the day of her birthday. i hope that isn't an omen. :)

Hmmm.. it sounds like you want a custom cake, and I think for custom cakes, you are supposed to talk to Brian. Personally, I am a worrier - I would probably call back to explain my concern and ask if I should be dealing with him directly. They get a ton of cake orders, though, so it's very possible that it will be fine :)

I'd be worried too - Chef Brian has done some awesome Haunted Mansion cakes, but they don't look like the one you want, which was made by the GF. You definitely need to get his email and send him those photos.

Also, all cakes have filling, so you might end up with something you don't like if you don't specify (I mean, it'll probably be vanilla or chocolate, but some people have preferences).

Hi. I am planning a trip for my sister and I for her 15th birthday in August '12. I definantly want to surprise her with a custom cake but I'm not sure if I should have it delivered to a restaurant during one of our dinners or have it delivered to our room. We are planning on staying at All-Star Movie. Is I even possible to have one of the bakeries do a fancy cake and deliver to ASM? Thanks! princess:

thanks. i'll call back tomorrow then.

DD is very specific that she wants that particular cake. she's been talking about it since we booked the trip in January. she's pretty easy-going and wouldn't throw a tantrum or anything, but still.

We are surprising DD with a birthday trip this spring. We will be eating at the HDDR on her birthday and there are only three people in our family. What's the best way to surprise her with a birthday cake?

For our next trip to Disney, we're doing a bunch of celebrating. One of the things I am doing is setting up "Christmas in June" for my MIL (she is very into family Christmases but we haven't been able to get together in years).

I have seen a bunch of awesome holiday themed cakes and was wondering if anyone knows if they are limited to the winter months only? I know it might sound silly to order one for June but I think it would just tickle her pink -- I already have a small tree and some other holiday themed items we're going to set up and I think a cake would be the literal icing on the whole thing.

Would love any insight! Thank you!!!

If you want a custom cake, you can have whatever theme you want :) Do you know where you want to order it for/from yet?

We are splitting between POR and YC and I am thinking of doing 'Christmas' while at YC - I am planning on spending the afternoon we move at SAB and sneaking up to the room and decorating while everyone swims. I thought I had read YC has Private Dining who does a lot of the EPCOT area cakes so I thought that would make it easier.

I'm just excited because MIL has no clue so far -- she thinks the whole trip is just to celebrate DH's accomplishment and DD's birthday (which we are!) but I wanted to do something special for her since we haven't been able to give her a Christmas in awhile. :santa:

Oh that sounds so nice! Well, IMO, it is never too early to give them a call (# should be at the beginning of the thread I think) and see what they can do - I think I dealt with mine in June, for December. ;)

My cake came from the YC, and we loved it, it was beautiful!! Pricey, but beautiful!

well, i called back today. i hope the email she gave me is correct. she was a little hard to understand and not really friendly. she told me that $85 definitely didn't include fondant (??). so, i have no idea what i would've gotten. i emailed the address she gave to me with a picture and requests. the lady on the phone told me that once i heard back, i'd have to call and order THAT cake and then cancel my other order. she said it would be a completely different order.

i am so confused!

That's pretty much how it works at the Contemporary for custom cakes: You call private dining, they give you the email address, you write to the chef, he gives you a quote, then you call private dining back to place the order. And fondant cakes there usually cost about $100. Dunno why she didn't just cancel your original order for you, though. Seems silly to make you jump through that extra hoop.

That sounds exactly right now, if that helps. If you don't hear back in a few days, you can call and double-check the address. I agree with PP re: not sure why she didn't just cancel your order for you. But that's how the custom cakes usually work: You e-mail back and forth with the person who will actually design/make your cake; Once that is finalized, he will give you a price and tell you to call the ordering line (because he can't actually place the order in the system); and when you call Disney, they will place the order for you as a custom cake and provide a few details, which will be send to the chef, who will know what the cake is based on your e-mails :) Does that make sense?

I'm so glad you called. You probably would have just gotten icing or something. I'm not sure why the original person you placed the order with was so unhelpful... how not magical :confused3

thank you to both you and LurkyLoo. if i'd have paid $85 for just icing, i would've been SO SO disappointed (as would my DD). i don't mind paying more and getting what i want. i expected to pay more.
