Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part IV! (2012-2016)

SO… Amanda got back to me immediately. I asked for a 6" red velvet cake with white mousse/fresh raspberry filling and vanilla buttercream frosting, with mickey heads piped on, a flower on top, and inscribed. Amanda says this can be done but it has to be a 10" cake, for $65 and $15 for decorations. That's WAY too much cake for the three of us, and more money than I wanted to spend. I have emailed back and asked what needs to be changed to make this a 6" cake. (I guess I thought if lurkyloo could get a 6" red velvet with custom filling, I could too!) We'll see… I'll keep you posted.

I'd bet dollars to doughnuts it's the fresh raspberry filling driving up the size. AKL can't do 8-inch cakes, so your only choices are 6-inch and 10-inch, and the 6-inch may be too small for fresh raspberries in the filling.

Just out of curiosity, lurkyloo, how long ago did you order this cake?

Middle of August, so just over a month ago.

hahaha… we "bet dollars to doughnuts" in our family, too, and as I always say, you know I don't fool around about doughnuts!

Thanks so much for this thread. I have learned so much. I can't wait to order our cake for 11/20!

I am about ready to throw in the towel. After offering to change my order to an 8" standard cake (yellow, chocolate mousse filling, white buttercream frosting), Chef Amanda decided that she wants our trip and my DD's birthday to be magical, and will do the 6" red velvet with white chocolate/raspberry filling, white buttercream frosting, with Mickey head decoration for $45 ($35 for the cake and $10 for the decoration). After sending all my contact info (including my HOME number) for Private Dining, they called and left a message as well as sending email. THey are back to the 10" custom cake for $80 plus tax, gratuity, and tip, and want a credit card to confirm this. Um, no. Even better, instead of using the HOME number I provided them, they pulled up my Jiko reservation and used the phone number on that- which is DD's cell number (as neither DH nor I have cell phones). Yup, they called and left a message about my custom cake order on my daughter's phone- the daughter for whom this WAS supposed to be a surprise! Sigh… Anyhow, I emailed Private Dining, copied Chef Amanda's email, and said if they couldn't confirm the cake and pricing that Chef Amanda and I agreed upon, I'd have to cancel the order. It's been over 24 hours and I haven't heard back. At this point, I really don't care. I'm really out of enthusiasm for getting a surprise custom birthday cake for DD. It's getting harder and harder to give my money to the Mouse. I will have a car and be making a stop at Publix on the way to BWV; perhaps I'll just order a cake there.

Since you're staying at BWV I would try ordering from Boardwalk Bakery and having it delivered to the room. I did that years ago for DH's birthday and they did a fabulous job. I found them much easier to deal with than AKL. I was also pleased with the process of ordering the mini cake for my daughter at BOG through the hotline. Very easy to deal with and delivered as promised. Good luck!

Amanda finally got back to me today! Woohoo! Cake is ordered :D I fear I might need to keep my fingers crossed lol

I agree! Try the Boardwalk Bakery. I had an excellent experience with ordering a cake there. This summer I also ordered a cake at MK to Crystal Palace. Maybe you can try emailing another contact.

I just got email from Amanda and she says she personally entered everything into the system for this cake, and it's as I was anticipating. I am going to go with it. If it happens, amazing!! It it doesn't happen, it doesn't matter, I'm gonna "let it go!" (from a girl who saw "Frozen" once and wasn't crazy over it!) The only thing that'll be a nightmare is if I get a big cake, and am charged for it. I am taking a print-out of Amanda's email from today and will stick to my guns!

I can't decide if WDW should suck it up and make cakes in whatever flavor combinations for whomever wants them, or not do custom cakes at all. It seems like they could make some money here, and it'd behoove them to standardize ordering, put it online, confirm it, and go with it!

Does anyone know if you can order a cake for someone else? My best friend is taking her first trip with her family in December. Could I order a cake to be spent to her room and then I would be charged for it?

The poster says that this is a new cake mapping, which debuted at Disney's Fairy Tales Wedding Expo!

Does anyone know if they will do a Gravity Falls cake? Trying to plan for my son's birthday. We are staying at AKL, but having his dinner at Beach Club

Am hoping to order a cake today or tomorrow for a couple weeks from now. Will be at Olivia's at Old Key West. Wondered if there was a particular time that was better than others for phoning up to order a cake? Is an anniversary cake (a big anniversary)

I would like a Little Mermaid themed mini cake for pick up on 10/22 at the CR. Is it too late to order?

PP mentioned she is on vacation. I believe the pastry Chiefs taking emails is a curiously not the requirement as talking to the pastry chief wasn't even offered when I called in June.

every cake i ordered for past years has been with the pastry chef via phone and email. first time i ever ordered they wanted me to talk with brian actually.

only cake we ever had issues with was donald when brian wasn't there. i don't know what happened there, but who knows. this years cake is at jiko from ananda. zebra cake with minnie/mickey sprasy detailed on top and a white chocolate scroll. should be pretty easy for them.

OK, guys, tell me how I convince a Disney bakery to do a Harry Potter themed cake. My son will be turning 5, he's obsessed with Harry Potter, and I know he'd love a Harry Potter cake while we're there. But...awkward.

I wonder if I can just ask them to do a simple round cake with crimson and yellow stripes (for Gryffindor house) and then bring in some sort of topper for them to put on it???

They can not legally do an HP cake. Your idea of a red and gold cake will work but I believe you won't be able to put the topper on until it gets to the table. Someone else may be able to say about non Disney character toppers.

Can anyone post pictures of a 2D cake topper?

I'm still working on the full recap, but I chatted with a GF chef at the Bridal Showcase on Saturday who says that, within the next year, Disney will be trying to put together an entire website devoted to cake-ordering, with photographs of standard options. And that custom cakes will still be available. :thumbsup2

The problem is, they don't charge you til you get the cake, and it is usually via the bill for the room. You could try to get them to charge your card instead, but it may still show up on her bill.

I thought it was a cute gimmick til I found out it costs $2,900 in addition to the price of making some of the tiers real cake. :scared1:

I try to order between 9am and 5pm ET, but sometimes they're available at off hours too.

Nope!

Thank you Lurkyloo for answering both of my questions and finding pictures for me!!! Really appreciate it! Sent an email to the CR cake email and we will see what they say! Excited! I was able to find some mini cake pictures through here, do you have any others perhaps? THANK YOU!
