Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part IV! (2012-2016)

Just a few questions about getting a cake then delivered to Chef Mickey's or Be Our Guest. I saw in a post or two up that the Contemporary services Be Our Guest. When having a cake at either of these restaurants, would they wrap up the remaining cake for you to take with you? (I've seen that the restaurants won't hold the rest of cakes until the end of the night, is this still true?)

Then my concern would be how well it is wrapped to carry it around the parks. Our reservation for Chef Mickey is for breakfast so if we didn't want to stop back at the hotel (Grand Floridian) and then go to the parks, we would have to carry the cake around all day. Has anyone actually done that without resulting in a disasterous clump of cake at the end of the day?

Our reservation at Be Our Guest is for dinner during Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, which obviously would be less time carrying the cake around after dinner. Again, any tips for carrying a cake around with you?

From my experience restaurants will box your leftover cake up for you but they will not hold it for you. As for carrying it around with you, I think it really depends upon the size of your cake. The boxes are quite big, even on mini cakes, and you need to think about what you will do with it whilst you are on rides etc. On a previous trip we used the stroller to cart it around but on our recent trip we couldn't do that. We had a 6" cake on a MNSSHP night and put our cake in a locker at MK as there was quite a bit of cake left and is was quite heavy. However, the locker wasn't wide enough to get the box in flat, it had to be tilted on its side to get it in which obviously made it fall to one side of the box. There might have been bigger lockers but I didn't look. I agree that if you are staying at GF then I would drop it off at your room before hitting the parks. Less hassle in the long run I think.

Well I ordered my first cake yesterday and...it didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped.

My fiance and I are going down to WDW for our wedding site visit in November. His parents will be with us for the first six days of our trip and my parents will be there for the last four. We have only one day of overlap where all six of us will be there together, so I wanted a cake that celebrates family. Since we'll be eating a late lunch at Kona at the Poly before MVMCP, I thought a Lilo and Stitch cake that said "Ohana" would be super appropriate.

I called the Grand Floridian Private Dining number. The cast member was perfectly sweet, but she kept insisting that the things I wanted weren't options. She even went so far as to tell me that "the people who post on those message boards don't know what they're talking about...you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet."

I asked for a 6" round cake (fully expecting her to tell me that I needed an 8" based on flavors or design). I asked that the cake be covered with red fondant with the white leaf pattern to mimic Lilo's dress. She said they couldn't do that because they don't have the stencil. I said that it doesn't need to be exact, I just want something that suggests Lilo. After putting me on hold for awhile, she came back and said that they have a new cutter that is close enough. Fine.

Then I said that I would like a 2D image of Stitch on white chocolate standing up on top of the cake. I asked if there were multiple Stitch images for me to select from and she said they have one that they use. Okay, I'm not too picky. But I would have sworn I've seen several different Stitch images used before.

Next, I asked for the white chocolate banner on top that simply says "Ohana." She said they don't put the banners on top, only on the side of the cake. Really? I'm positive I've seen banners on the top of the cake. But whatever, again I'm flexible. I also told her that the chef could included any other details like palm trees or tropical flowers if he/she wanted. Whatever would make it look colorful and happy.

The real issue came when we discussed flavors. I wanted the same combo Carrie used on the Fozzie Bear cake: Chocolate cake with a layered filling of chocolate ganache and peanut butter buttercream. The cast member said that they only have five (boring) filling flavors that she can guarantee. The rest are reserved for wedding cakes only. She can make a note of what I would like and IF they happen to be making a wedding cake with those exact flavors on the day they make my cake, they can use those fillings. But that I needed to choose a standard filling as a backup. She also said that ganache is an icing, not a filling, and that I wouldn't like it anyway because ganache is very hard. I tried to explain that there were good reviews of this combination, but she again questioned the accuracy and validity of reviews on the internet. She offered peanut butter cup mousse as a possibility. When I said that some reviewers have said that the mousse fillings are a little bland, she seemed personally offended. She said that she really likes their mousses and she asked it I had personally ever tried the mousse and taken issue with it. I explained that no, this is my first cake order which is why I had done extensive internet research. She told me that the peanut butter cup mousse would be fine, especially since I'll probably end up with the standard chocolate anyway. Sigh. Fine. Whatever.

I was pleasantly surprised that she quoted the price at only $71 for the cake. I gave her my credit card number and expiration date. However, when I got off the phone, I realized that she had never asked for my first name, the name on my credit card, or my phone number. Is that typical? She did ask me what the last name on my Kona reservation was, so I suppose she could have gotten my first name and phone number from the reservation and (correctly) assumed that that was the name on my credit card. But she said a charge would show up on my credit card immediately and it hasn't 24 hours later. So I don't have any confirmation that my order is actually going to happen.

Anyway, I hate to sound like I'm complaining about the very nice woman who took my order. She seemed like a real sweetheart and I feel like she was honestly trying to help me get a cake I'll be happy with. I had a complicated cake in mind and she very patiently listened to what I wanted. But it was frustrating to be somewhat scolded for taking the time to research the Disney cake process when Disney themselves do a crap job of communicating the options. However, even if the cake isn't the cake of my dreams, I'm sure my family will be very surprised and everything will be okay. As long as it actually happens that is.

I feel for you, I really do. I also tried to order cakes through the GF for our recent trip and ended up frustrated. I wanted an anniversary cake for DH and I at 'Ohana as we married at the Polynesian and as it was our 10th I wanted to make it special. I also wanted a birthday cake for my DD at 1900PF. Like you, I had done loads of research on this board and knew I might have a tough time ordering so I kept my requests simple and took inspiration from cakes I knew they had made before thinking I'd have more success but it wasn't to be. Anyway, to cut a long story short I ended up having the cakes made by the CR bakery instead for our ADR's in MK. The cakes were great but they did lose the significance of why I wanted them when and where I did. DD and DH didn't mind but I had a really special plan in my mind and it just didn't come off. I hope you have better luck and get what you want. Stitch is my favourite! I had the same idea about Lilo's dress for a different cake we had in MK but as it was a mini cake I was told the pattern was too intricate for a small cake. Can't wait to see yours :stitch:

I'm trying to decide when to order a cake for my trip in December. 3 years ago I worked with Pat from the Grand Floridian and had the cake delivered directly to our room there where we stayed. It came out great, exactly what I wanted, but this time I want to try something from Chef Brian at the Contemporary.
I don't suppose they would deliver a cake to the Grand Floridian from the Contemporary because that was the easiest option?

Just a few questions about getting a cake then delivered to Chef Mickey's or Be Our Guest.

I think your best bet is, as others have suggested, getting it at Chef Mickey's. I would then leave it with Bell Services at the Contemporary while you got to the parks. They can put it in their fridge. Then you can hop off the monorail on your way back to the GF at the end of the day and pick it up from them before getting back on the monorail to your room.

I think Kermit could be a really cool cake - you could have his triangle "ruff" around the base of the cake and maybe they'd draw his eyes on top. Maybe... I considered Rowlf (he's my favorite!) but couldn't figure out a way to communicate "Rowlf" other than fur, since he doesn't wear accessories like Fozzie does!

Here is a cake from last March. It was an 8-inch chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream icing and peanut buttercup filling.

Thanks for sharing!

Well if Disney would actually create and share standardized cake info, we wouldn't have to resort to the Internet for all our info! Most people who have asked her for special flavors and been told "maybe but only if there's a wedding cake that uses them" have ended up getting what they asked for in the end. After speaking to the actual pastry chefs at numerous wedding showcases, it has become apparent to me that the only person who thinks certain flavors/designs can't be done is the Private Dining contact at the Grand Floridian. The chefs are happy to make cakes in whatever flavor or style is requested.

She also said that ganache is an icing, not a filling, and that I wouldn't like it anyway because ganache is very hard.

It's thick and fudgey, yes, but it ain't Magic Shell!

Which is exactly why you can take that scolding with a grain of salt. :thumbsup2 I'm not sure why she's so huffy about the info we post here when we're just trying to do what she can/will not.

Should I be worried that she didn't ask for my name or phone number? Or that I haven't gotten charged for the cake yet? I was planning to call and confirm all the details about a week out anyway.

I've had several cakes now and have never once been charged for them until the actual day I receive it. It's always been added to the ticket wherever I'm dining. As for not adding the name you might want to confirm. I'm sure if she had your last name and reservation number she could see that but it can't hurt to double check. If you have some time until your trip maybe just call at some point to confirm. I always confirm my cakes a couple weeks out.

The Fozzie cake has inspired me! I think I'm going to order a Pluto looking cake (themed!) with the layered ganache/pb buttercream and chocolate cake as a surprise for my husband's birthday which we will be celebrating on our trip in December.

We are staying at Bay Lake tower & I think I'd like it delivered to our room after our arrival. Can someone tell me the number to call or email? I am assuming it would be the contemporary bakery? I think just a small 6" round cake with "pluto" colored fondant and a collar around it? Maybe they could stick on two black fondant or chocolate dog ears?

When I ordered my cake, they asked for a credit card # but didn't charge it until the cake was delivered. I would be concerned about the name & number though!

Oddly enough, they charged my card this morning. It actually makes me feel better to know that the order is in the system, although I'll still call to confirm a few days out.

It seems odd to me that they've already charged your card. I've only ordered one cake and we haven't gone on our trip yet, so I'm not super experienced at this, but I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't be charged until you have received the cake. I would inquire about the process when you call to confirm.

Having so much cake trouble based on location of ressies!!! TRIP IS IN 3 DAYS!

All we want for two ten year old birthday boys is a mickey head cake.

Wanted Teppan Edo, but they have an outside vendor.
Could do Raglan Road and eat after our 6:45 dinner but then we'd have to take it back to hotel before going back to MK.
Could do a lunch cake at Cape May, but we'll have to run the cake back to the hotel.
Could have delivered to CBR --I think???- during a break between AK and MK.

Suggestions?
TIA

BW Bakery does cakes for CBR so if you wanted a Mickey cake I would get it from there. I'm not sure about delivery. You might need to pick up at the food court. You have to go through CBR though to order.

Not sure if I was any help. I hope it works out for you and your boys.

ETA: It says on the first page to order through Shutters and you can have it delivered to your room or restaurant. Good luck!

I think the MIckey head cake is pretty big - like feeds 10 people big. What about 2 mini cakes with Mickey ears on top? You could customize flavors and colors based on what they each like? Then no leftovers to deal with. Just a thought. Good luck!

This is a great idea! It takes us a long time to eat a mini cake - my kids and I ate one over three nights and three days - so we would have leftovers. I'm not sure how it works at CBR, but I loved having the cake delivered to our room. At first, I was concerned that would be less festive than the restaurant delivery, but it turned out really well for many reasons. At WL, they timed the cake delivery for 9:30pm so it would be waiting when we returned from the park at night.

I'm thinking about surprising my fiance (still very unaccustomed to saying that since we just got engaged last week!) with a cake for our trip in December, but even after reading through the FAQ and a lot of posts I still feel totally clueless!

I'd like to get the cake on the first or second night so we will have time to finish it over the week. We are doing Raglan Road the first night and Boatwright's the second night and I know neither of those are places we can get a cake delivered (correct me if I'm wrong). Any ideas from anyone?

I could just have the cake arrive at The Wave when we do brunch there our first day. Would it be possible for them to wrap it for us so we could eat it later? I thought I read that they couldn't wrap it up for you and you had to eat it on the spot. We'll be going to that brunch right from getting engagement pictures, so it would be nice to have a little celebratory cake waiting for us at that meal. I just don't think we'd be able to pile it on top of a big breakfast! If we could get it wrapped to go though, that would definitely be perfect timing.

Also, I saw some posters going back and fourth about a SW design, but I didn't really see that resolved. Have Star Wars things been cleared for cakes? My fiance is a SW nut, and I would love to get some sort of X-Wing design or really anything SW related on a mini-cake. He is not that big of a Disney fan, so if I couldn't get SW stuff I would probably just go with a bride and groom themed cake.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. :thumbsup2

Congratulations! Chef Mickey's wrapped ours earlier this year, and we took it back to Poly immediately after dinner. CR advised us in both January and August that the cakes should be refrigerated, so that worked out well.
