Ordering my first cake through The Contemporary and have been in contact with Chef Brian. Shhh, its a secret LOL. After much deliberation on my behalf, decided to go with a Stitch/Angel theme to celebrate my Bday and Anniversary. Going to go with Vanilla cake with strawberry mousse/fresh strawberries filling cream cheese buttercream for the frosting, some flowers and a 2D image of Stitch and Angel. Was quoted $69....Hoping to mock the flavor of BOG's Strawberry Cream Cheese Cupcake! Super excited to see the outcome! Thanks for all the great info here!

Anyone who's done this, did you have a chance to customize it in any way? We will be at WDW about a week before our 25th wedding anniversary, and I cannot think of a better place to celebrate that milestone than a dinner at Jiko! I am thinking of ordering the zebra cake in keeping with the Jiko theme, but then I think I might want something a little more traditional (silver accents). If they could put it on a silver tray rather than the gold one, and add the white chocolate Minnie/Mickey with the silver accents, that might be okay.

This is a long way off, but I am just throwing around the idea in my head. Thanks!

Hi all. I guess my question on the restaurant board was moved into this thread. The title included my question - I wanted to know if anyone has ordered the Zebra Cake at AKL to be served at Jiko. And if so, could you customize it, or does it come as is for the design?

Thanks!

Here's a question..I be seen people add their own toppers to the custom cake. How do you arrange that with the staff? Do you sneak off and do it yourself, do you give instructions to the waitstaff? This is a surprise for my husband so I don't want it to be ruined if possible.

It's ok to use a topper that is not on their approved list of character, right?

I believe it depends on the restaurant, but I know others have mailed toppers down to the chefs in advance.

I can't wait to see how it turns out -- that sounds like exactly what I want for my birthday cake!

I never have ordered a cake. However, in OP there is links to a Master List and this was on it: A phone number to order at AKL is on there as well
  • Zebra Cake $42 (serves 8-10): Vanilla cake with chocolate mousse and light and dark chocolate ganache zebra stripes

I was brave enough to call the cake hotline for getting an email-address and the very friendly CM was willing to transfer my email to the right person. In my case it is obviously the GF bakery.

A cake-CM there immediately answered my email and came back with an offer.
95 $ for a 6 inch beach themed cake.

She will call me to discuss the details.
95 $...for a 6 inch cake. Wow..That must be a cake.

sounds very expensive to me, but I will discuss the details with that CM when she calls and I will talk about the price and how it comes into existence

About how long from the time you email with a picture and details of the cake you'd like and when they respond back?

Trying again. The first picture is the cake I ordered (details are on page 133). The second is an image I had saved from this thread as an example of a mini cake done in Christmas colors.

Thanks for posting the pics again. Does anyone have a rough idea of how much the 2 tier mini cake would cost? My mom will be celebrating her 83rd birthday during our trip in early December and I have an ADR for Narcoosee's. I considered a holiday themed mini cake, or does anyone have any other suggestions for a mini cake for an 83rd birthday? It will just be the 2 of us and we don't need a lot of cake left over.

I ordered the Zebra Cake at Jiko for my father's birthday. They would not personalize the cake, except for writing a greeting on the cake plate and putting candles on top. The cake was delicious and a great surprise for my father. We had 9 people and still had leftover cake. My Dad said it was the best cake he ever had. This was last December, so maybe they have changed their policies. You can always try. At any rate, it is a great cake.

Mini-cakes usually run about $35 since they cannot do very elaborate decorations on it. I had one at Be Our Guest and it was plenty for 2 adults (over the course of 2 days).Belle Mini Cake 09-2013.JPG

image.jpg Does anyone know if buttercream can be made this dark or close to it, and if so will it taste awful? I know I've had some gross tasting colored frosting before. Looking for a star or space look....

I have made buttercream that dark before, black even for a Mickey cake. If I do say so myself, it still tasted great.

I would think a Chef's to be even better!

It can definitely be made that dark. However, it will taste better if the chef starts with a chocolate buttercream base rather than white buttercream.

I just got off the phone with someone from the cake department at Disney. This will probably be old news to those who are more familiar with ordering a cake, but for me I was surprised. I had asked for a mini 2 tier cake with a silhouette of a Disney Character. She told me that it had to go through legal for approval, which could take 15 to 30 days!:scared1: I asked why & she told me they don't have the rights to use certain imagines, like they can't use Pooh or Mary Poppins. I have to say, that's so crazy that Disney Cakes can not use certain Disney characters. If they don't own the rights to them, who does? And is it only cakes, they sell Pooh all over the parks. So confusing. I'm really hoping it doesn't actually take that long to hear back from them.
