Official Dancing With the Stars: Season 18

Derek & Cheryl do that with every single one of their partners.

But, when it came time for the Olympics, Meryl & Charlie didn't call Mark, they called Derek. Yes, they wanted splashy show-stopping choreography, but they also wanted better. That is not Mark. That is Derek.

I agree, both Cheryl and Derek know how to teach and how to choreograph to their partner's strengths. They also both really know how to choreograph to get the audience on their side.

Only thing is Cheryl has gotten more duds.. I don't think Derek has had a single partner that had no sense of rhythm. I would like to see how he does with someone like Kate G or Cloris.

Great show tonight, loved many of the performances. Amy's story and performance were very moving, Danica's a bit of a stretch. I like her though. Loved Charlie, that was so cute and full of personality. He moves like a dancer, of course, he is one!

Hoping for a Meryl & Derek routine. I'd like to see her dance in a less frantic style than the brothers Chmerkovsky. Maks will get her back, they do have a cute partnership. She has a handsome Russian boyfriend, so she must feel right at home with Maks.

OT: I thought I heard Meryl is (or was ) dating the son of their coach~ I don't know her name, just remember her from the Olympic's. She's Russian, a red-head, and coaches the other dance team of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir?

Does anyone know when we will hear who the new partnerships are? I'm guessing that the pros and stars already found out this morning since we could only tweet our choices until midnight last night, plus they would start practicing their dances today. I haven't heard anything, though.:confused3

The official DWTS twitter account tweeted today that we won't find out until they perform on Monday but I find it hard to believe that the stars won't leak it out themselves while they are practicing with a new person all week.

I hope the new partnerships won't be leaked before the performances. I want to be surprised.

On the same note--if I don't know who the partners are I won't have to fret about the ones I don't like between now and Monday evening.

You just made our point. Candace needs a lot of work in other areas. She can also probably shine, if Mark actually took the time to find what her strong points are. Derek & Cheryl do that with every single one of their partners.

Mark just likes to take the easy route. Put the girls in a lot of flashy fringe and make the shimmy for 8 seconds, so it looks like they do a lot of movement, when his choreography or work with his partners aren't very individualized, special or complicated. Dance move too complicated to take time to teach, no stick in an 8 beat shimmy instead.

I know a former, professional concert pianist I'll call Joe. Joe had a concert at Carnegie Hall once. He told me once that his brother was actually a better musician than he was. That playing piano came easily to his brother, who didn't practice his scales or technique the way he had to for several hours a day, to get to his brother's ease at playing.

But, in the end, it was his brother's undoing. Because playing came so easily, when it finally counted in the areas/levels he had to work hard at, he didn't. He couldn't appreciate the struggle. And he saw how much work it was for Joe to improve and he didn't want to put in that much effort. So he didn't make himself work hard to become exquisite at his craft, which may have made him at a world class level of musician. Eventually Joe surpassed him, having his Carnegie Hall concert and putting out a couple CDs.

I don't know, maybe Mark, being Corky & Shirley Ballas' child, maybe dancing genetically came very easily to Mark. And when he saw how much work Derek & Julianne had to put in, and keep putting in to improve and challenge themselves, Mark just didn't want to have to put in that much effort? :confused3

....well said. :thumbsup2

Anyone else think that Danica's flirtation with Val was a little desperate? Like when she brought up that she was called sexy or something to that effect..

It seems the flirtation is mutual, this was posted on Val's instagram-

I liked Danica's story because it was one I could relate to. I was expecting my daughter when my grandfather got very ill. He had really been looking forward to meeting his great-granddaughter and when he passed the month before she was born, it really broke my heart. He was a dance teacher and taught me how to dance, so when she was doing her dance for her son and grandmother, it hit home for me.

I don't want to know beforehand either...

....isn't she married? :confused3

I can't vouch for it's accuracy, but according to Wikipedia:

She married composer Mike Verta on March 22, 2009, in La Jolla, California; the couple had dated since 2001.[31] They had their first child, a son named Draco, in 2010,[32][33] McKellar filed for divorce from Verta in June 2012,[34] with the dissolution becoming final in February 2013.

Is anybody else excited to see who is dancing with whom tonight? Did it get leaked anywhere or will it be a surprise?

I'm excited. I know Peta leaked hers and I think there was a list up on Mjsbigblog with pairings

I was so excited to see Candace with Tony. I just love him. At the beginning of the season, I was hoping that she would be with either Tristan or Tony. Love that I got to see what that partnership was like. Wish that they had been able to score higher.

Drew and Witney. Yeah.... um... wow. I'm hoping that they just edited the rehearsal footage poorly because Witney was really irritated me in it.

Did yall think that Drew and Witney did better than Candace and Tony? Because I didn't. :confused3

Candace looked uncomfortable in hold, IMO, but I think she and Tony would have been good partners. I really liked Cheryl and James. I thought Drew was overscored, but he looks like he's having fun :)

I thought Danica did well considering she had musical problems.
