interview with Marlowe:

Did I love that? no. but I did expect it. On Sunday night, one of the producers tweeted something about "what do you want? what are you afraid of?" I answered "want a wedding. fear an outside force." and he favorited my tweet, so I had a feeling it wasn't going to happen. And like I said, when the actor who plays her dad wan't on any cast list I had another feeling. And when they were down to 5 minutes and it hadn't happened yet, I knew it wasn't happening. As a storytelling device, it's genius. Yeah, I'm sure some people won't watch anymore but I know I'll watch. I want to know what happens next, and isn't that the goal of every TV show? The only one of their finales that thrilled me was season 4, "Always". In every other one, their status was up in the air. At least we know they still love each other. We know whatever happened to him wasn't his choice. And like Castle said to Beckett "every love story has its obstacles." This is another one for them to defeat.

I would have loved the finale last night had it ended in a wedding. Seriously... I think they overcame enough obstacles. At this point they have "jumped the shark" a few too many times for me.

The finale was just lazy writing. The whole thing was a farce. There's no way that a background check for the FBI (or even for the NYPD) wouldn't have turned up a marriage, so her just finding out about it now stretches credibility too far. It was a cliched and hackneyed device to prevent a wedding.

It's clear that the show runners know that marriage=end of show (it's been the death knell for similar shows going back to Moonlighting, at least) so they're stretching this out as far as they can.

My money's on some variant of next season being a dragged out version of, "But it's too dangerous for us to get married right now," or her saying, "You being close to my life is too dangerous and I don't want to marry you and drag you into it," etc. etc. eventually ending in another (probably aborted) trip to the altar.

I've loved this show from the beginning, but next season better show me something special or I won't make it long.

I was very disappointed in the finale. First, I really hate cliffhangers, by the time the new season rolls around I've forgotten what happened, second, the forgotten marriage had been done & done better, third, who waits until 72 hours before the wedding to get their marriage license, I could go on but what's the point?

I agree it was lazy writting, they've spent this season talking about the wedding & then they cheat us. I think the show has managed them getting together very well, ratings must be okay because it got renewed. Jumped the shark is right.

Do the writers think the only way to get people to keep watching is a stupid cliffhanger? Plus if they wanted us to think he was dead they shouldn't have said "Castle & Beckett will be back next season with new adventures".

I enjoyed the episode up until the last few minutes. Since we all know Castle is going to survive, there is no real suspense in the cliffhanger.

Nathan Fillion looked great in his scenes in the car! I wanted to see him out of it standing at the altar.

I loved the throwaway scene of Lanie and Espisito sitting together holding hands. I thought the talk between Martha and Kate was well done also.

Everything was working out so nicely until the stupid car scene. I was hoping the people in the SUV would turn out to be his fans, wedding guests or someone admiring his car. Since it looked so ominous, it would have turned into a comic moment.

I agree on lots of the rest of it, but this part is actually pretty common. Several states have short time limits on how long a license is valid once it has been issued. NY does happen to have a long period, but California's is shorter.

This was a budget ep; they had a lot of plotlines to set up and no money left to see them through, so they took shortcuts to get it all in as cheaply as possible. Is that good? No, of course not, but it happens. As long as it doesn't become a pattern I won't abandon the show.

If you think about it, having a wedding for a season finale isn't the greatest idea unless it is also the series finale. In a show like this, a wedding is an ending of sorts, and lots of viewers will watch the wedding and think, "OK, that's done, what else is out there that I haven't seen?" If you put a wedding in a premiere, then I think that it is more likely that viewers will stick around for the rest of the season to see if it works out.

:rotfl2: I was looking for this thread because I was going to post the exact same thing. I could not believe that they had that kind of ending and than the announcement about Castle and Beckett next fall....seriously? Not much of a cliffhanger there. :confused3

I'm still sorting out some of my feelings about that finale.

Did I hate it? no. But I didn't love it either. It's kind of in-between for me.

There were some things I loved:
1. Rick telling Kate that all great love stories have obstacles
2. Lanie & Espo waiting for the wedding
3. the ugly dress laid out on the morgue table
4. watching everyone rally around to make this wedding happen
5. the dress she wore
6. the fact that they didn't have a fight
7. the discussion about Rick's man parts
8. the scene between Kate & Martha right before the "wedding"
9. the phone call between Rick & Kate right before

As I said before, I knew the wedding wasn't going to happen, so that didn't surprise me.

The waiting until 72 hours to get the marriage license? As NotUrsula said, that's not unusual. I know my sister & brother-in-law waited to get theirs (even here in NY) since they didn't want to lose it, LOL. They got it about 5 days before. And if I remember, they were just asked if they had ever been married before, the clerk didn't check. (but it was 1994, so maybe they didn't have everything at their fingertips)

I did think of the fact that she would have gone thru a background check for the job in the AG's office. I wasn't sure if she went thru one to become a cop, and according to some stuff I've read, she may not have. I would think that to work for the AG's office they'd do a deep background check, but I don't know for sure. I know someone who has worked for a few agencies in DC so if I get a chance I'll ask her.

I found it interesting that the Las Vegas drunken wedding that was thought to be a goof but was real has actually happened. Marlowe mentioned that it happened to Janeane Garofalo.

I kinda liked the idea that Kate messed up. She's teased Rick a few times over the years about his marriages, now's his chance. And he's secure in their relationship now. I guess we saw a little bit of Rebel Becks, LOL!

And I guess she didn't go all Detective Beckett on Rogan since she wasn't in NYC. And I guess they didn't have her do it so she & Rick could fix it together.

It's nice to know that the ugly dress is gone. I'm so glad I was right about that. And I thought she'd end up in her "mother's" dress too.

Now as to all the criticisms of the finale:
I get it. I do. I wish they had gotten married, I do. I'm disappointed, but as I said, I'm not surprised. But after reading the Marlowe interviews, I'm sure they will be getting married some day. It may even be in the first episode of next year for all we know. We know Rick isn't going to die (more on that later), so it's very possible he's sitting in an ambulance getting patched up. After all, the police knew to call her rather quickly since the car was still on fire when she got there.

Or 3XK/Kelly left a note to call Beckett. Or a new adversary. Who knows?

Marlowe did say something interesting: new season, new budget! So now he gets to start over & really do a wedding right. Maybe a full wedding episode even! Look, our hatred of the ugly dress got it banned, maybe we can get a total wedding episode out of this drama.

Now as to another point I've seen brought up again & again: "this really isn't a cliffhanger because we know Castle's not going to die! After all, the show is called Castle" Yes, that's true. And it's probably true of any of the main cast (heck, go back & read the first post on this thread when I said that Beckett probably won't die after being shot at the end of season 3). But we don't know what happened. We don't know how he'll get out of it. We don't know who's behind it. Will he escape on his own or will Kate & the guys find him? And we don't know how it will affect Castle & Beckett & their relationship. (my guess: make it stronger) I know I won't forget what happened in the cliffhanger, nor will most of the people I know who watch the show. And there are plenty of people who really liked the finale, and some actually loved it. For me, it's behind Always & the season 3 finale. I liked this one more than last year's or season 2. I'd put season 1 behind this one, so for me it's:
Season 4
Season 3
Season 6
Season 1
Season 5
Season 2

All excellent points, especially the stuff about the budget. They did get an extra episode this year too, so he was spread a bit thin.

Well, I talked to the person I knew who has had background checks because she works for the federal government and she told me that they don't always include things like marriages. She also hires people for the job, and told me they often don't complete background checks until after the person is hired. So Kate's marriage/non-divorce may have slipped thru the cracks.
