Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

Follow up to this:

FYI I just ran the 5K on Tuesday and they did not have any medals. We instead got certificates. I was, and still am, so incredibly disappointed and will hopefully be emailing and/or calling to see what is going on. Guest Services said they haven't had medals for at least 2 weeks and are not giving them out anymore. I don't know that I fully believe that, but it is what I was told. At the race someone said the company hadn't shipped them. So YMMV but don't count on a medal like I did. That was honestly the only reason I ran. Well, it was what got me out of bed that morning.

Wow, really? That is so nice! I'm going to try to contact someone on the cruise line and see if they can send me one, but if not then I will PM you. Thank you, and tell your husband thank you too!

So, I emailed Customer Relations (or whomever gets the emails) and very politely expressed my disappointment over not getting the medal. I acknowledged that this did not by any means ruin my cruise, that we actually had an amazing time, but that that silly little medal was what had gotten me up out of bed and onto the island and through the 5K, and then it wasn't there. I also listed all of the amazingly wonderful aspects of our cruise, and how much we enjoyed it, and how lucky we were to be able to have that experience. Let me over emphasize that I was in no way a demanding, entitled, whiner in my email ;).

This was their email response:

Thank you for your e-mail.

I was so very sorry to learn of any disappointment due to not receiving
a medal after completing the Castaway Cay 5K. While we do not guarantee
any medals in conjunction with this race, we appreciate your feedback
and have shared your comments. Regrettably, we do not have any medals
that we can send to you at this time.

I am truly sorry for any disappointment.

Ok, so I was fine with that. I followed Elsa's advice and Let It Go.

So imagine my surprise then when I went to get the mail, and in a cardboard envelope with the Disney Cruise Line logo I found this:

There was no note inside, nothing but the medal.

Just back from the Fantasy. We had 160 "runners". Did not get off the ship early...in fact, the CM was delaying things until she got the 'signal' for us to leave. We left the ship with everyone else!!! Which was extremely confusing for us that have never been to Castaway Cay and had no idea where we were supposed to go. BTW, they did have medals...in fact, at one of the Disney Trivia events, the winners got one of the medals????!!!!
Also, if you are planning on buying a CC Run t-shirt, get it as soon as you finish. They have lots, but the popular sizes sold out!

I cannot wait to run this. I've done the WDW half, full and W&D marathons, but am really excited about running on Castaway Cay. I am a medal junkie and mostly run for the bling, but at least I have the proper expectation set now.

Dh ran it last Saturday (May 10) on the Dream. They still had medals & our navigator said it was for ages 10 & up.

yes. I run a 5k 5 days a week. I am slow, but consistent. The hottest it has ever been when I ran outside was about 70. How bad is the heat going to affect my run? Should I plan on 10 minutes longer and not feel horrid about my time?

Yes, it will affect you and your time will be slower. Don't worry. It's all for fun. Right? :rotfl:

i would LOVE to do this; am not fit at all; april this year completed 26 mile walk and survived so would like to do this; though i know my DH would certainly NOT!
what do partners (and children) do while you are completing the 5k? and is there any memento for taking part? certificate? ;)

My DH is very fit. I married Jack Sprat. He is doing it with me on August 1st to be nice. He has 2 marathons scheduled in August and September so this just to help me. We are also running with one of our friends who has just lost 75 pounds this year and has worked really hard to do this.

I am very slow, but I am doing it. Our friends wife is going to bring the girls out when they are ready and meet us.

I have heard you get a medal, but not sure. You will get a bib which I think is the coolest part, but I don't get to keep it unless I finish.

The one thing I have learned about most runners is that they are so kind and not judgmental when you are out their trying. You would think my DH could be really snide and make comments, but he is just happy I am doing it with him and I think most people who are on this run will be the same.

First time, I got up and alll ready, left them sleeping. They got up a bit later and got ready and went to meet Jack Sparrow. After they did that they took the tram and met me a few minutes after I finished. Second time they didn't need to meet jack again, and I had previously decided to go back to the ship to get showered and get my beach stuff. So I left them sleeping, came back, for them up and we all got ready to go. Basically we all got what we wanted. I got to jog and they got to sleep. :) Oh and on the second cruise I was getting up earlier so was making an order for fruit and coffee to be delivered really early, so I had that before working out.

Now that it's more run by rundisney they are more consistent with having the plastic medals at the end.

Glad to hear it. I've never had an issue in the past getting a medal, but based on the multitude of comments, it sounds like some people really had a tough time with them.

On a side note - I am looking forward to running the Castaway Cay 5k two days in a row on the upcoming October 23rd double dip ;)

thank you , thats really helpful, i'm thinking they can get breakfast while i'm doing it and we can meet up after, keeping all happy!

I think the medals are stocked on each individual ship and brought off, so if a ship runs out then the runners don't get it. I haven't heard of it being a big or continuing problem in awhile.

For me the bib is the thing. Especially for the normal CC 5K.

I'm looking forward to that same double dip. :) Recent pix of me are in my "cruise" trip report; if you see me, say hi! (or avoid me, depending on what you want to do, LOL)

Keeping everyone happy is important. I will tell you, it's a bit odd to split up like that on a family trip! But really, it's just for an hour or two (depending on how long the meetup and getting off the ship is, and how long it takes you to run it (takes me ages)), and if everyone gets just what they want, then you can swap stories and have something extra-interesting to talk about for a bit. :)

i certainly wont be running it :scared: i am however really looking forward to taking part and having something different to do whilst on vacation!:cool1:
