I wanted to surprise my daughter with a great birthday cake on our recent trip to WDW. I started by calling the cake hotline and connecting with the Wilderness Lodge. I told them what I wanted and they gave me Chef Brian's e-mail address at the Contemporary. I told Brian what I wanted and he told me that it would be $300

That was much more than I could afford.

So after a couple of e-mails back and forth I decided on a Mad Hatter's cake with a Splash Mountain theme. After it was all set, Brian told me to call the WL private dining and actually order the cake through them. That is what I did.
I was traveling with a friend (Bill) and my daughter (Kelly) - just the three of us. We arrived at the Whispering Canyon in plenty of time for our reservation. Bill checked us in at the podium and confirmed the cake. We waited for a little while. The pager went off and we were seated. Sadly we were not in the maining dining room, but a smaller dining room off to the side. The main reason I ordered the cake is that my daughter LOVES attention. Bill told them at the podium that it didn't matter if the cake was brought to the table before, during or after the meal. I have read reviews of people not being happy with the delivery time of the cake but we didn't care. The dining experience was a little disappointing since we were off to the side and could hear craziness going on in the main dining room but really couldn't see what was going on.
When the meal was over, Bill left the table and found the waitress and asked if Kelly could be paraded or something through the dining room with her birthday cake. The waitress said, she couldn't be paraded but she would bring the cake out. So we waited a bit and the waitress showed up with a cupcake and had everyone in the area sing happy birthday. When that was over I quietly walked up to the waitress and explained that there was an expensive Splash Mountain cake somewhere that was supposed to be served. A few minutes later, the chef came out and chatted with us. We had already met him because Bill has nut allergies and always reviews the menu with the chef. Chef Eddie kind of nosed around the table, chatted and took away the bread basket. He mumbled something about making room. Then the cake arrived and it was perfect. This time a bunch of wait staff as well as the chef and the people in our area of the restaurant sang Happy Birthday. It really was a let down because there weren't many people to actually see the cake and by this time my daughter was way past being ready to leave. Also there was a six year old who was celebrating his birthday. They brought out a cupcake for him and then he just kind of waited - I know he was looking for a great cake as well.
So I really don't know where the communication breakdown was with the cake. The waitress apparently wasn't told about it. She was great. In dealing with both the nut allergy and the cake, Eddie was great. The cake was magnificent. Unfortunately the whole experience was a disappointment.
The cake cost $135. It was chocolate on the inside - both cake and mousse filling. It had delicious white buttercream and fondant on the outside. Everything was edible. We did not cut into it and they stored it for us until the next day when we were driving to Fort Lauderdale. I think the agreement to store it was made due to the screw up. Anyway, here is a picture. My camera is new and I still haven't learned how do use the settings. The cake was absolutely perfect.
